These are my tips based upon my experience. There is a 72 hour refund policy on the bikes in the shop. Be prepared to ride the bike asap at least a few miles to see how the ties are performing. They do not have brand new tires and the tires may look new but the rubber is aged. old rubber tires look new, but they're actually pretty old and have no grip on the rim. Get a receipt for all work done. Ask for it. If you're going in to the shops to see if you've got a flat tire or you haven't pumped up your tire enough, make sure that you run a test on the tire by putting it underwater or try the spray suds bubble method to see if you have a slow leak or you just haven't pumped it up enough. Don't put a new innertube in your tire unless you know that there is indeed a leak. And if you gearshift or cable is acting up, first try adjusting before going into replacing the whole cable line, and maybe even the adjuster on the handlebar. Working with the Repair helpers in the self-help section, you may be lead to a full replacement before checking to see if that is even necessary. It's possible to check YouTube and do some of this at home before going to the shop. Start minimal then replace if that doesn't work. Go in with this mindset and insist that you run a test to see if replacement is even necessary. read more

I simply cannot say enough great things about my recent experience with RBP. After my son got his first "real mountain bike" last spring, he's been eager to learn more about how to tinker on it and fix little things that pop up with it all on his own. After doing a bit of searching online, I wound up on the RBP website reading about their Bike Repair Class, and I reached out via email to find out whether it would be an option for my son (12yo) to take the class. Andy was quick to get back to me and said that they'd be open to having him attend the class with myself or my husband there to chaperone. Over 9 weekly classes, my son completely overhauled a bike that will now be provided to a community member through RBP's Biggest Little Commuter program. He has gained so many skills and knowledge to give him a great foundation for learning to work on his own bike, AND he gained so much confidence through this class! Even this mom, who was only there to "chaperone" learned a ton. Our instructors for the class were Ray and Chai, both of whom were really SO great. My son has a motor coordination disorder which made some of the tasks, particulary those that required very fine motor skills, to be challenging for him, but both Ray and Chai were always there to offer encouragement, as well demonstrate other techniques or tricks that he could utilize to make it that he COULD do all of the things and use the tools correctly. They were always incredibly patient, and I often left our classes feeling a tad bit emotional over seeing how kind and encouraging they were of this kid who was just SO excited to be having the opportunity to learn from them. On our final night of the class, we brought his own bike into the shop, and Andy (who was actually on his way out the door when we arrived) stayed to help my son do a couple of repairs on his own bike, and my kiddo was so proud of the many kind things Andy, Ray, and Chai said about his own bike - it really meant so much. The particularly incredible thing about this class is that it is offered for free to members. (The membership itself was only $20.) There is a $50 deposit for the class, which is returned after you complete the class and volunteer 8 hours of time. While we have chosen to donate our deposit to this fantastic organization, we are both very much looking forward to volunteering during school breaks. They also have every imaginable part available, many both new and used, at great price points. I purchased a brand new tire and tube for the kiddo's bike for less than retail and loved knowing it's helping to support their great work along the way. I also appreciate that our membership allows us use of their workspaces and tools for times when his bike may require repairs that aren't as easily done at home without the bike stand and/or specialty tools. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Reno Bike Project. They sell bikes for a reasonable cost for those that need them, teach classes on bike repair, and teach biking classes. My teenage son has participated in several of their classes and it has been such a valuable and fun experience for him. I have the highest regard for and opinion of this organization. read more

I decided to go get my bike fixed and I was disappointed... the manager at the front of the house seamed to be in a bad mood. The employees where extremely friendly and helpful but the manager was overcharging for everything he changed me 45 dollars to change my chain on my mountain bike just for labor I'm not trying to be rude but they advertise as non profit and affordable bike repairs yet another bike shop quoted me 25 dollars for labor. I looked at some of they Yelp reviews and there where a couple similar reviews where they where overcharging for things and the manager was in a bad mood... I like to support non profits but The Reno Bike project has just become too expensive. read more

My friend and I both needed our back brakes fixed for different reasons. Mine was in and out in 5 minutes, he also have me a run down of things to watch for in the future. My friend's bike needed more work so he broke down the cost of labor and materials in a prompt, professional manner. It was going to take 30-60 minutes so we went and ran errands and they called 30 minutes later saying it was ready! Very quick, extremely reasonably priced, and they know their stuff. How can I possibly show how much I love this place and the staff? Giving it 5 stars to start. So let me start off by telling you what led me here. my daughter was hit by a car while riding her bike to school last week. It was obvious that the bike would need a new front tire, but that is all I could see. Through the many recommendations of friends, doctors and yelp, I was directed here. I showed up and was greeted with a smile. Kristin (hope I spelled his name right) offered to bring in the brown bike from my car. After taking a look at it he points out the bent forks and frame. And suggested replacing it since it wild not be safe as is, even with a new front wheel. He shows me what they have ready to roll, and also explained that the other option is to fix up one from the unfinished stock or even pick one grin there and have them fix it. Since it was to be my daughters bike I let her choose. She chose to fix one up herself :) We went back the next morning and Ray was fantastic with her. Taking her step by step on what to look for and how to fix it. Not only that, but taking the time to explain why and even a few tricks to make things easier to fix. They had all the tools there for her. The big thing was that she did all the work herself. She had the biggest smile and sense of accomplishment when she was done just an hour and a half after starting. I am very excited that Reno has a great establishment like this that is open to the public to help themselves and provide valuable life skills to those willing to come in and learn. love this place. read more

They built my first "real" mountain bike, an Intense Tracer Rasta Limited Edition, and it was dialed in from my first run! Everyone speaks so highly of RBP. It definitely set me up with some expectations. I have to say, it just does not live up to the hype. I worked with several different employees for a few issues that came up after I purchased my bike from them. One guy was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and eager to assist me. He was the absolute best of my experience however. I purchased my bike and extra's for almost $400 total and I couldn't have been more excited. They said the bike was 'refurbished' but in excellent condition. 'Refurbished' was the only true statement of the lot. After my maiden voyage, the chain broke so I had to return and replace it. It's been many years since I've worked on bikes, so I was eager to have some minor assistance, but the only assistance I received was a request for money when it took me 40 min to do that and adjust my brake line. I thought, eh, they're just having an off day. This can't be normal. But as I returned four additional times for varied degrees of issues, the last of which still has not been repaired, I found that the average experience is stand offish employees (volunteers), an impatience on par with a five year old on christmas eve, and general malice toward people they don't judge to be a part of their clique. I will not return, nor give more of my money to the RBP. I am very disappointed with my experiences and the assistance I've yet to receive. Luckily I discovered that REI has an excellent shop with people who actually give a damn. read more

I like this place. I've volunteered here on and off over the past 2 years, but haven't got back to it yet this year. In any case, this is a rad community bike shop. One of the best parts is the public work stations they have in the back - you get a cabinet of tools and a bike stand for a few bucks ($3?) an hour. The cabinet of tools has most everything you need - wrenches, crank pulls, third hands, grease, etc. They've got some public access truing stands as well. For the more expensive/exotic tools, you can ask for help, and they'll probably be able to help you out. When you're back there, you'll have all types -hipsters converting an old frame to a fixie, guys with recumbents, homeless folks trying to keep their bike moving, etc. Not much of the high end roadie spandex crowd though . . . and a bit male dominated (though I believe Thursday is their Ladies' Night, where the shop is set aside for women to learn to wrench on bikes). The other great part of the shop is their incredible staff. You can ask them questions, and they'll help you out as they can. It may take a bit of patience, as there's generally more questioners around than staff (or volunteers), but you'll eventually get there. They also run a full-service shop, and the work is top-notch. Actual bike selection is hit-or-miss - bikes they have for sale depend heavily on what's been donated, as they tend to fix these up and sell them. On the other hand, if you're looking for random parts for your bike, you can't beat the prices on the used parts if you don't mind digging through some bins and have some idea of what you're looking for. Crowd can be a little shady too, as they're located on Fourth Street, and part of their clientele includes the homeless, so you may get a random drunk or too, but that gives the shop part of it's charm. In fact, I really like volunteering during their Burning Man bike sales, as they draw in quite the crowd of people picking up bikes before heading out to the playa. In any case, public workstations and the staff really set this place apart. read more

Super helpful staff! I went in with two tubes with holes in the same spots. Odd!? The staff gave me options in terms of $20 for them to do or $10 for me to do there or at home with new tubes. I ended up going with the $10 option to fix it there. I hadn't ever replaced the tubes to be honest so I wanted to jump on the opportunity to learn. The two who helped me were super patient and kind. I worked in the back of the shop of a work bench style table next to a guy who was getting help on taking apart his bike or building one. I started working on it and when I was pumping up the tube, I started noticing all the parts they really have. I was impressed with the variety of options. I noticed the wall of bikes that have lived. Some more than others for sure. Trikes, tandem, mountain, or street with a variety of prices. I will be going back in the future when I need any bike work. This is an awesome gem to have in Reno. read more

Reno Bike Project is a local bicycle parts and repair nonprofit organization located near downtown Reno, NV. ihave been a patron for the last 3 years. At first, everyone working in there was very nice and professional.Lately however, the staff has been a bit snarky, bordering upon rude. I had a high end bike stolen from me last year, and being that they sell used bike parts,I asked if they had happened upon the type of parts and frame that were stolen from me. The guy working responded to me saying, "we don't have stolen bikes here, and besides that, Cannondale isn't popular in Reno." in a very rude manner. They need to get thier collective stuff together over there or may not continue doing business with them if they don't. read more

It gives me great pain to write this because I really want to like the Reno Bike Project. The first time I walked in and saw reconditioned bicycles and bins of assorted parts, I felt at home. But that's the veneer. I needed a repair that involved putting a sprocket on a rear wheel for a bike I was motorizing. Nope. I understand. That's a motorized bike. But I came back with a different problem, on an e-bike. I couldn't get chains to align. RBP kept my bike five days (including a weekend.) I came to pick it up, paid, and got maybe 50 feet outside before the chain popped off. Took it back in and was told, well, take it elsewhere. These are bicycle people. They can do better. Anyone can do the easy repair, but you are people who live on two wheels. I feel bad for doing this, but I am also going to play the handicapped card. I am a senior and I have an obvious case of Parkinson's Disease. I may be transitioning from a powered bike to a powered chair next year. Each beautiful Reno day that I remain less than fully mobile is a day lost forever. Do better. read more
