We waited quite a while to leave this review, but as parents and educators, we caution against this establishment for children. They are not welcoming of neurodivergent children, they don't have training or education regarding what is appropriate for certain age groups, and they have poor communication skills. We confirmed with other families over the course of a few months in order to avoid leaving a negative review based on one instructor. Perhaps this place is great for adults. We started taking our son here when they first opened a few years back. Unfortunately we had to take off 18 months due to covid but we were able to freeze our account during that time with zero problems:) We've been back a little over a month now and I cannot say enough good things about this place! It's grown immensely in our absence and for good reason because it's a great school with great instructors. Coach Tim is who teaches the kids classes. He is very skilled, hands on and thorough. Consistently helping the children learn the moves during the training drills and all throughout class. I am not yet familiar with all the assistant coaches but they've all been patient and helpful as well. Kids/teens classes are M-F 4:30-5:30 and 9:30-1030 Saturdays. They also offer early morning classes for adults starting at 5:30am, 11am and 6pm. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great jiu jitsu school for either themselves or their children. I had to take some time off for Covid but have recently returned to training. The school is better than ever. The training is top-tier, the environment feels safe, everything feels clean, and the people are great. The school has developed a core group of competitors and those guys are always fantastic (and challenging) to train with. Max and Tim are still excellent at teaching and coaching. I occasionally am lucky to take a class with Vince, who's a highly skilled teacher and somehow packages knowledge in a way that really sticks in my brain. The school recently added Elias as an instructor. Elias is super knowledgeable on Jiu-jitsu and often has a different spin on teaching techniques. There's a handful of BJJ schools closer to my house, but it's worth it to drive across town to train with the crew at Renzo. I'm convinced that Renzo Reno is the best place in our area to learn jiu-jitsu. read more

Jiu Jitsu as a beginner is like witnessing magic. Max and his wizards do a great job fitting the pieces of the puzzle together in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. My family of 4 (two teens--one in adult classes, one in kids') started classes about a month ago and we're loving it. It's the intellectual challenge of chess while increasing strength, mobility and cardio performance. We've found BJJ to be a great compliment to Yoga and climbing to round things out. This is a clean and modern facility in a great location, it has great lineage and pedigree, and plenty of chances for competition and advancement. Max, the head instructor, teaches some of the highest level, most effective, and universally applicable concepts in Jiu Jitsu to people of every skill level. I cannot say enough positive things about Renzo Gracie Reno. I went from the couch to training a little over a month ago with zero grappling experience. I was obviously nervous about this new fitness adventure but the owners Stephanie and Max were super welcoming and made the whole experience fun and motivating. I'm now down several pounds, my cardio is better and I'm having a ton of fun! Sure, the place is clean. Yes, there is plenty of brand new fuji designed mat space. Its well appointed layout allows lots of natural light, and there is a changing room with lockers and a bunch of wooden cubbies for gear storage. These features are nice, but thats not where the REAL value lies in RGA Reno. The head instructor comes from RGA New York: arguably the top academy in the country. He trained and coached there for 15 years and produced countless high level jiujitsu practitioners. The system that Max McGarr teaches is well thought out from beginning to end. The concepts and progressions of movements are taught safely and fit well together. Work had me up in Reno and I stumbled across the Renzo Gracie academy. I went in for a drop in and was blown away with the gym. It was the cleanest gym I've ever been to and the instructors were amazing. I spent the first day with Vince at an open mat and he showed me a few things that were really next level. Then I had the privilege of meeting Max and Stephanie and they made me feel like I was family and part of the team even knowing I was just visiting Reno. Max's instructing is beyond what most gyms provide and his dedication to his students was obvious from the first minute I watched the interactions. I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu now for about 7 years and how he broke everything down was so amazing and I would highly recommend if you live in the area to definitely give Max an opportunity to show you why you should train with him.
