You only get one chance to make a good first impression. We'd gone to Freestyle Martial Arts check out their class offerings for myself and my family members of all ages and abilities and as a possible birthday party location for a youngster family member as they advertise: "Swing by for a tour to see what we have to offer you and your family" and they advertise they're disabled-friendly with, "We've had students with asthma and high blood pressure, and we've also taught students in wheelchairs. If you or your child has a physical limitation or a learning disability, let us show you how Freestyle can make it work" and they advertise "You're also welcome to stop by and observe any of our group classes." and they advertise, "For your event, you'll have the run of the entire academy for games like dodgeball, obstacle course, padded weapons and Instructor Says, a martial arts segment with punching, kicking and blocking, and even a dance party complete with disco lights and lasers. Your Freestyle party includes party favors! All guests will receive a card good for a FREE karate lesson with gi." and they advertise, "Am I too old to start martial arts? This is a place where you have to know what you want and how to get there. They are fantastic with the kids and have been for some time. Their work with adults is good, but not for everyone. The "deals" for enrollment are questionable. The owners are amazing and they have so much to offer but they do not spend much time with the littles that make up so much of their constituency. This is where this facility is lacking. I do appreciate what they have done and what is in their future but is here where I have looked for other disciplines. read more

Freestyle Martial Arts used to be an amazing place for our community. Since changing owners in April of 2021 the philosophy of respect and discipline through learning has changed to an environment of shaming and scare tactics which go against the entire idea that martial arts should help kids develop positive self image. There are many great studios in Reno, unfortunately this is no longer one we will support. read more

I've been taking my 7 year old here since April. An instructor came to his school, did a lesson with his class and gave him a "free class coupon" for follow up demo-class with other newbies. My son loved the demo class so we decided to commit. The stipulations is be enrolled for at least 9 months and have the monthly fee auto drafted from an account electronically. It is recommended students attend 2-3 (out of 4offered) sessions a week. My son has special needs and is socially very atypical, I was concerned we got locked into another thing he'd fail at. It has been 3 months and my son loves it! He has made a ton of progress in his martial art skills and in group activities in general. The staff are supportive and kind but miraculously don't lower expectations for him, it's a beautiful thing to see. He wants to do this "until he's a grown up." The classes can be a bit large, but they adequately staff instructors. The dojo also has social events occasionally off location to build community which is a cool perk. Parking can be a bit tight as none of the neighboring businesses will let you park in their lots (and are sure to come out and tell you). So if you don't get a spot in their adjacent lot, you have to park in a dirt lot across the street. I'd recommend this place to anyone. I recently found out that both of my neighbors (adult make & female, married) are both black belts that grew out of and still come to this dojo. It's a lovely community:) read more

This review is specifically for the birthday parties they host. Wow! such a fun, high energy, and unique birthday package. They provide hours of hosted play, first a fun padded foam obstacle course for the kids to run through at their own pace, a little dancing, lots of music, a little bit of foam sword tag, and a fun leaping challenge over an increasing bar onto pads. The birthday kid gets to cut the cake with a sword as well. They provide a goodie bag of sidewalk chalk and a free lesson for all invited kids and you are welcome to bring food to set up in the lobby area. read more

This is a WONDERFUL Martial Arts Studio and an asset to the community! They have classes ranging from Karate, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Fitness Training, but my favorite of all is the Capoeira classes on Monday, Wed, and Friday at 7:30 pm with the Reno Tahoe Capoeira group!! This studio and very well organized and clean. They offer a lot of kid friendly classes, and have very experienced, and friendly teachers willing to help you reach your goals!! Our son has been part of the lil dragons unit for 1.5 years. The instructors are phenomenal and invested into the children's success. Numerous times his instructors have checked in on how his behavior is at school. He has learned some hard lessons, but grateful and would definitely recommend. Class sizes can be large and parking sometimes hectic. But so worth the growth we see in our Goose. read more

I've been a member at Freestyle for about three years now. It started out as fun and a great workout, and now I consider the staff and many of my fellow martial arts students more like extended family. As far as martial arts goes, it's an excellent family program. The young people I've seen go through the program benefit in so many ways; they learn confidence, how to deal with criticism, how to manage goals, and how to interact well with other kids and with adults, in addition to self-defense and standing up for themselves. As a grown-up, it's really great to have a fitness program that doesn't get boring, plus you feel like a real bad-ass after a hardcore boxing workout. It's not a "McDojo" (you definitely earn your black belt); the training conditions are controlled and safe (no "Sweep the leg, Johnny!"); and while you do practice hand-to-hand self defense in stressful situations, they don't make any promises about "Ultimate Self Defense" (sorry, but there's no way to karate your way out of a gunpoint attack). In short, yes, it's a legit martial arts program. In addition to the mixed tae kwon do / muay thai program, they also integrate Brazilian jiu jitsu grappling. I have a great time rolling with the BJJ folks at Freestyle! Absolutely no creepy vibes from any of the guys, and there's often at least one other lady to roll with. When I decided to enter a local BJJ tournament for the experience, both my BJJ coaches and my martial arts instructors were all super supportive and awesome in getting me ready to go in there and have a great time competing, too. Freestyle also has a great fitness program. They offer several eight-week fitness challenges throughout the year; I've completed one, and it was really great starting with a group of other newbies and tracking my strength increases over the course of the two months. The cardio kickboxing is fun, especially once you get used to the fast pace, and the bootcamp and resistance classes are both challenging and easy to scale up as you get stronger. The instructors and fitness regulars are super inspiring -- they illustrate exactly what you get to expect out of your fitness regimen if you stick with it! In short, I've very much enjoyed training at Freestyle, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a legit martial arts or fitness program. read more

Our experience with the child martial arts portion of the school has been a mixed bag. The classes are often inspiring with one good lead instructor. They are also often taught by very young students, which can result in a mixed experience/lesson depending on the class size that day (which varies often and can be too large for the number of "instructors" they have for the day). If the main instructor is out for the week they have fill in younger instructors who aren't really ready for the task. The school also has had the instructors use class time to coach the students into "getting their friends to sign up", and if they do they could win a TV. I thought this was very out of line given that just moments before they were discussing being your best person and true to your values. Is getting 4-10 year old kids to sell memberships appropriate? Especially when they are hearing this from their Master/Mentor during class time? There have also been numerous hidden costs. I regularly feel we are moving forward one paycheck or should I say "belt" at a time. They also closed for two weeks over the winter holiday and there was no reimbursement for any portion of that month's fee. There are some very positive instructors and students at this school but I would definitely say it is a mixed bag that comes with a 9 month up front cash commitment and a significant amount of gray. read more

I have been coming here for about 2 years. I do the fitness classes. I had been away from working out regularly for a couple of years and started with one class a week. As the years have progressed I am up to three or four classes per week. I've tried the cardio I kickboxing, the toning and strength classes, and the fighter physique. I really like them all! I have never done one of the fitness challenges, but the people who have speak very highly of the program. The instructors are motivating and pretty upbeat at 6 o'clock in the morning. I specially like Britney, she is my favorite instructor. I always know the work out will be worth getting up in the morning. read more

Best school for the whole family, adults and kids alike. It is a very family oriented atmosphere. The kids learn about self respect, discipline, communication, and respecting others. All of the instructors are friendly and easy to talk to. We went here after looking at 5 or 6 other places and could not be happier with our decision. The kids are having a great time and you can see them focusing more at home. The adult martial arts program is great too. I signed myself up after my kids were enrolled for a while. Like I said, it is a great family oriented atmosphere. I like that I get a workout with each class in addition to learning all of the techniques. They also have cardio kickboxing and weight bands classes that I might try in the future. read more

I would not recommend any children here. A person i knew went and became a black belt, but ever since his experience at freestyle martial arts academy he has become more aggressive. He will never be the same again. He doesn't talk out his problems. Please do not hurt family members or friends be having them take classes with this studio. They make the students take an oath about never having any of the things they practice leave the studio, but yet they tell the students to practice destructive kicks and punches at home around toddlers? This place makes me sick. i wish i had my brother back. read more

I've been doing Jiu Jitsu with Scott for 6 months. During that time, I've gotten to drop in on a variety of different studios while traveling. Not sure about the martial arts but the kickboxing class was ridiculous. The music was pumped up double time, hardly recognizable, sounded like Mickey Mouse singing, no rhythm, simply speed. Music was so loud you couldn't hear the different instructors. Class was so fast it encouraged injury and two older women talked loudly at the back of the class the last 15 minutes. Too fast and too loud...take it down a notch ladies. The instructors are well trained though, super nice and knowledgeable. Back to my old class down the street, at least they have rhythm. read more

I have been attending Freestyle Fitness on and off for the last 19 years. Their fitness classes have expanded into different forms of martial-art based work-outs, which I love. I have attended many of their "Boot-Camps", which I believe is the best in Reno. They always get me back on track. The focal point brings together body, mind, and nutrition based knowledge to benefit all aspects of health, both physical and mental. I also love the fact, that depending on my level of fitness of the time, I can always get a excellent work out. I have had many injuries during the years and the instructors are informed at giving modifications, so I'm still able to keep the intensity level high, and I feel great at the end of every work-out which is extremely gratifying. There is nothing more frustrating then not being able to workout due to injury. My son as attended their martial arts classes for 7 years, and their is not a better way to instill self-defense, discipline & respect into a child's life. The instructors at Freestyle are amazing and instill core values along with teaching martial arts. This is a place for all whole family to enjoy. Keep up the good work Freestyle!! read more
