    Jury instructions
    Marco C.

I was called for jury duty, and I sat myself in the reasonably comfortable waiting room to await a screening questionnaire and then an audience with the judge. The staff here were pretty good, they explained the process well and they got through it efficiently. I actually ended up being the very last juror candidate to be screened, but fortunately I was dismissed! In time for lunch, even. The courthouse is centrally located such that it's easily accessible by bus or BART. I took the bus there myself, it got me there pretty quickly. Why park in Oakland when you don't have to?

Months after moving to Oakland, low and behold, I received a jury duty notice. :p More than 150+ potential jurors went through the selection process, down to 12 jurors. I was chosen to serve as juror # XY. The staff here at the Alameda County Courthouse were kind and efficient. They were all very helpful and provided clear instructions what time to check-in, what days we are expected to be here and time of arrival. They explained how the process of juror selection works and the expected length of time. I think if you've never served as a juror, it might be worthy of your time as a citizen in our great nation, to at least experience it once. You will gain an appreciation of the system in placed, and what role you will play to rule on factual evidence and the rule of law. Cheers!

This is where you go for Jury Duty in Oakland!! The building definitely has that old school feel, security is nice enough, and so are the people conducting Jury Duty. The waiting is always longer than I expect it to be, make sure you bring your patience with you when you come, because it's gonna feel like a long day. But they do a pretty good job, and they'll help you with whatever they can paperwork wise.

TIp for the jury duty people. There IS validation for parking but only at the one that they use on Jackson. So the museum is the one you will possibly choose and likely pay 15 dollars. The Jackson is six all day WITH validation stamp located in the north side of the big room. Right next to that is the "I was at justly duty form" that you pick up for employer. They do not mention this in the outgoing voice message. So it is only privy to those who can figure out how to pull the info from the websites. I brought an empty box of cereal to hold on my hand because I get comfort from it. Holding it makes me feel more safe. And my mask keeps falling off. And I have a twitch in my eyelid today for some reason. It is so stressful!

Okay it's Jury duty MEH. I have to say that it took me over an hour and half to get here just to make it with 10 minutes left to my name. This building is old and nothing compared to SF or San Mateo. First let's talk about parking, guess what they give you a discount for the parking lot and it's a dollar. I have to say that most places pay for your parking but that is not the case here. So expect to pay some money out of your own pocket if you have to do jury duty here. Entering the building you will pass through security just like the airport so make sure that you take all your items out and put them in the bin. When you go to the jury room it is actually pretty big and there are areas where you can just sit and read or use your computer. The bathroom is located right there next to the room which is nice and so if they call your name you won't miss it because it comes over the intercom. It is very important to listen to the announcements at the beginning of session so you won't forget to pick up your note for work and where to get your parking ticket stamped for your little discount. Now here is where I have to say that what I really don't like about this court house. Most court houses have a pretty decent cafe so when you take your breaks you can move fairly quickly in and out and get back to the jury room. This court had a small hole in the wall store and the only thing they had that was hot was a hot dog and the rest was just frozen items to throw in the microwave. There was just this one little lady and oh man was the wait long and so by the time I got my frozen burrito and was able to get back to the jury room guess what? Mika go to room 19 and here I am gathering my stuff and walking down this long hall under the building which connects to another building just to get to this court room. Yup, still holding my hot burrito which is slowly dying in my hands. The jurors gather in this room and it is to the point where there are not enough chairs so many are left standing and we are given instructions by the court clerk and judge about this case. I do have to say that the court officers and judge provided very clear instructions and were very nice. The court clerk was very nice about answering a question I had too. I was fortunate enough be excused from this trail. If you get called like me every year almost twice a year be prepared when you go to this court house that you probably should eat or bring something to eat and try to get over to the court room before the others or you will be stuck standing. This is the 2nd time I have been to this court house. Also, do not forget to walk back to the jury room and get your parking ticket stamped by the machine and that you will still pay for parking. I do not suggest street parking for the meters are 2 hours and they do not like people to leave the court room or the jury room unless they are given breaks.

This courthouse takes credit card for payment yes?

The Alcopark parking garage next to the courthouse (165 13th St Oakland, CA 94612) is where you want to park. They do take credit cards. If I could pay to not have Jury Duty at the courthouse, that would be awesome!

On the online portal where you see jury reporting, it lists the parking garage. It is located on the corner of 7th and Jefferson. I highly suggest parking at the garage. It is $7 but $6 with validation. The garage does get full so get there early. I got there at 7:00 when it opened to ensure I always got a spot. Some of the staff also park here. I preferred to park here vs the street because adding money for the street parking is not ideal considering we may be in court when the time runs out and I saw people get tickets who parked on the street. The juror room was larger than other courthouses. The space is very well kept/clean and there's free WiFi for you to work in between etc. This is also where you get your parking ticket validated for the garage (you get $1 off when validated). Shoutout to Vicki for being so helpful! The food cart downstairs was also good and they had a good variety. Although many people don't like jury duty, I found the staff to be helpful and the space to be clean. It was easy to navigate as well. They made my jury duty experience positive.

Mrs. Martinez is different; she actually cares about what is going on in your life that has led you to her and really pulls out all the stops and options to help you be successful not only in completing your probation successfully but also in your life inso making it possible to stay off of probation in the future. She has gotten me into counseling (something I never thought was even an option or that I needed or would be helpful , but it was, for understanding why I make some of these bad choices, understanding what triggers me and how to deal with those triggers ) instead of a rehab treatment I didn't need and would have gotten me let go of my current job, due to all the required check ins and meetings i would need to attend . she also helped me to get back on my feet with temoarary houseing until together we found affordable perminate houseing keeping my family the entire time. They have tours and visitors and weddings going on so there are always a lot of people here and a lot going on. It can get really crowded, especially in the rotunda area. The two things that I have had to do here are the only things I can speak to and to be fair the process was fairly simple for both but there is a bit of a wait, just like any other government building I guess. Even recently, when I stopped by to run a quick errand, I found myself slowing down just to take it all in again. Inside, it's just as impressive. The grand rotunda, marble staircase, and overall scale make it feel more like a historic landmark than a typical government building. During my last visit, there were several couples there for wedding ceremonies, which added a really positive and lively atmosphere with lots of happy faces. There's also a lot of history behind the building. The original City Hall was largely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and the current one was designed by Arthur Brown Jr. in a Beaux-Arts style as part of the city's rebuilding effort. The dome is especially striking and even taller than the one at the United States Capitol. Over the years, the building has been reinforced, including major upgrades after the 1989 earthquake to help it better withstand future ones. Today, it's still a very active place, home to city offices, public services, and daily wedding ceremonies. It's also often used for events, photos, and even film shoots. At night, the building is sometimes lit up in different colors for holidays and special occasions, which is a nice touch. One quick (and slightly embarrassing) moment from my last visit: right after I walked into one of the offices to pick up a document, the building's alarm suddenly went off. For a second, I was convinced I had somehow triggered it. Thankfully, a staff member quickly reassured me it was just a fire alarm and told me to head outside. Definitely a moment of relief!

If you're at the end of the line entering the building (because you were off on a fun walk and not standing in line for half an hour to enter the building), you may be told that the jury assembly room is full and that you'll had to wait outside on some benches. This happened to me. The sounds of voices down the hallway are semi muted and semi echoey. There's no explanation for what comes next, when you're sitting outside the room, just the instructions to wait outside the room. I haven't been to any other courthouse in the Bay Area, so I can't compare. I have to say, expectations have not been set appropriately for the 8 of us sitting outside the room right now. And we still have no idea of the time we are summoned for today. Some time later into orientation... the group of us waiting outside the room have been let into the room to stand. There was a long introduction speech that contained about 10% useful information. It felt like we were getting a review of the courthouses in Oakland (learned that it is 7$ parking over there). Now the TV / DVD isn't working and we're all sitting around while potential jurors volunteer to try to debug the system. 5 minutes and counting... the potential juror trying to help just slapped the DVD player... Apparently the video is just to tell us about the first day. If not selected for today, dismissed for 12 months. Otherwise, depends on judge and case. 3 hours after start time, I've effectively completed one questionnaire and now we are released until tomorrow morning. Day 2 update! Told to wait outside jury summons room, attendant will collect us and bring us to court before 9am start time. 8:58am and attendant hasn't come, a group of us walk downstairs and enter courtroom just before 9am. Sometime around 9:10am, roll call is taken to figure out who the missing person is. Sometime later judge enters. Everyone stands, everyone sits. 9:40am: judge explained that they had to call in another pool of potential jurors and asks us to return 9am next day to be selected with the other pool, and dismisses us for the day. Why couldn't they just give us a call? There's only 20 of us left in the pool.
