Who likes to hit the gym when they travel? Not me! However,…read morewe all know what's right, and for that reason I decided to pack my gear and hit the gym on my last business trip. I searched online and found Fit Body Boot Camp or FBBC as it's called. Other reviews convinced me to try it out, mainly because reviews for other gyms in the area were not so hot. I did their Online Package, where for only $29 I could get four (4) visits and access to some online downloads from the franchise mothership. The process was super easy! Took just a minute to complete the signup. Almost immediately I received the email confirmation. The online goodies didn't really excite me (wasn't really interested in reading a corporate rendition of fat burning ideas, audio report, and nutrition information; sorry, no offense.) ANYWAY... The $29 special allows you to take four sessions within 14 days. I could only hit two classes during the week I was traveling in the area and got my butt kicked, THOROUGHLY. I do Boot Camp style classes a few days per week back home and are all one hour classes. The FBBC classes are just 35 minutes but don't let that fool you. I was praying to crawl out of the door within 15 minutes. Don't let that scare you, that's a good thing! We were broken up into teams of two and four people, and pushed through different interval training. Ropes, bosu ball work, elastic strap work, dumbbell work, kettle bells, ropes, more! One thing that really left a positive impression on me was how the instructors would walk around and motivate, review your form, and help you correct any issues so you can get a better, safer work out. Totally impressed. One tip to the newbies: you are asked to wear clean, indoor-only shoes. That's a fair enough request because they don't want people wearing the same shoes that they ran along the beach with into there really awesome carpet-padded workout room. Any clean gym shoes will work, just don't be "that guy" who brings in a pair of cruddy, sandy shoes. If you're looking for a workout that's only 35 minutes where you will get intense cardio and muscular work, this is your place!

As a past Division I college athlete, I…read moreknow what it takes to get in shape, but Marianna and FBBC make staying in shape a priority. They are great at modifying exercises for you, depending on any injuries you may have. This is VERY important, as most group trainings don't take the individual into account, and injuries often occur. I have been working out with Marianna for over 3 years and I will remain loyal to her as a trainer. I enjoy her private sessions as well at the fun environment of the bootcamp sessions. I highly recommend Marianna and the FBBC team!

Although COVID was still very much around in 2021, the gym reopened in the spring of that year. The COVID protocols were a bit funky... they required masks to enter the facility but once you were running on the treadmill, you could take them off?!? Didn't make sense to me. Anyhow, now that the mask mandate is over, it's kind of like "at your own risk". They offer wipes throughout the class (when switching groups) to sanitize the equipment for the next person. I do love the workout because I think it's the best bang for your buck, if you want an intense workout (mostly cardio) with about 15-20 minutes of strength training. You do a session on the treadmill (up to 30 minutes) of running at varied paces/inclines. Then a combination of rowing and strength training. I like to start on the treadmill. The bigger classes get split into three groups, with a 1/3 of the class starting on the treadmill, rower, or weight room. Bring a towel and water bottle!!! You will be dripping sweat by the end of it. The goal is to get at least 12 splat points (when your heart rate gets over 84%). To track this, you will have to buy the OTF heart monitor and you will see your progress on the screens around the room. The theory if you get 12+ splat points, you will burn extra calories over the next 24 hours. The coaches are all great. I especially like Sarah, Stephanie, and Jeff! They are all very encouraging during the workout. During the academic year, this location is filled with college girls from UCSB, just FYI. It's never hard to get into a class, and I usually wait until the morning of to book a class through their online app since there is a late cancellation policy if you don't cancel within 8 (?) hours of the scheduled class. I signed up for the Elite membership which gives me 8 classes a month, which works perfectly for me, as I do a lot of other forms of exercise. I love OTF and am glad it's part of my workout routine!!

I've never done classes like this and was intrigued as I know a few people who go here. I tried four classes with four different instructors and this is what I found. 1. While there is a circuit of machines and equipment to use, each class is different. There are themes to the classes which helps keep things feel fresh. 2. The instructors are seriously so positive and kind. They helped me with the machines and checked on me during each stage. 3. The people who go here are also so nice and supportive. It can be intimidating starting at a new place but I felt welcomed. 4. Sadly, this is not the workout for me but I really think this is a great place for people who want a trainer and enjoy this kind of pace. The classes went by quickly and I definitely felt it a few days after. But alas, not something I see myself doing. Overall, i think this is a great place for every body!

Since returning from uni, I decided to look for some studios in my local area (SY Valley) and found Awaken! When I was checking out their Instagram, I really dug the vibes and message shared by the owner. I happened to notice that an Intro to Kickboxing class was being hosted in the coming week and decided to attend! Located next to an old theater, there's lots of parking for the studio. I had seen that the studio was a no shoes policy so I entered, then took off my shoes before walking onto the mat. I got to meet the owner Bridget and she gave a spiel about Awaken and its mission! During the class we were taught some basic kicks and punches that would come up during a regular class at Awaken. She also took time to explain the various types of classes that were offered at the studio. It was a very cool and fun environment that definitely encouraged me to come back. Ever since this class, I purchased a class pack and have been coming back every week! I would become a member but am currently in the midst of transitioning out of university and don't quite have the funds to support a membership at the moment. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed all of my classes I've taken and miss it when I don't go back for a bit. Anyone thinking about checking Awaken out -- go for it! You won't regret it. I highly recommend them!
