I went for The Writers Den Open Mic Night. Posts read their newest poems. There were snacks and a beautiful vibe of creativity and peace. The bookstore has books that highlight Black writers and musicians. There were lots of book themed presents, stickers, candles and swag. They also support an organization in our area called Black Men Read. Black Men Read supports getting books into hands of teenagers in the area encouraging them to read books that they would enjoy in order to improve literacy. Support Resist! They are doing great work for our community. read more

Drove here from Richmond just to give my support to a Black owned establishment. I am such a book-nerd and I enjoy going to book stores just to satisfy and calm my nervous system. First off, its location in downtown Petersburg, the street (and most of Petersburg) is aligned with old architecture and deep black history. The buildings were historic and very well preserved. I stood outside for a while to look around to "feel" the presence of my ancestors. Please research the history of Petersburg......Anyway, "Resist." The NAME!!! I see what yall did there!!! I LOVE that concept!!! Inside, the bookstore's atmosphere is quiet, warm, and welcoming. They have shelves thoughtfully stocked with a diverse range of games like Black Monopoly. I've NEVER, in my years of "never fnishing the game," have seen a Black version!!! They have books from Black literature and history to poetry, children's books, and information about upcoming artists and authors that will be visiting. Its not a HUGE selection but just enough to keep you interested. Local art, candles, bookmarks, and thoughtful gifts add to the cozy charm, making it a perfect spot to lose yourself in a good book, join in conversation, or simply sip tea and reflect. Especially smack-dab in the middle of an area where we were not allowed to read. Regular events like open mic nights and book clubs add fun and connection to the space, turning it into more than a store. it's a community gathering place where curiosity and creativity flourish. Large and diverse selection of books, featuring primarily Black authors. There was a display about black love which was nice. There is a large section of black history. The owner was there and so was his family, they all seemed like nice people. There was a comfortable seating area as well as bean-bag chairs for children. They had many books for children about embracing your brown skin and hair types. Overall would recommend stopping in if you're in the area! read more

Fantastic, awesome bookstore with an awesome collection that focuses mostly on black voices and history but I also saw books on Cuba and Palestine. I would imagine they will add more voices over time. It's a great collection! The vibe is super inviting--there are cozy chairs in the back, the decor is great, the store even smells nice! They sell candles and other swag and sponsor book groups and host other events. I got on the mailing list and was asked to suggest any authors I'd like to see them invite to Petersburg. Clearly, this store welcomes all. I really hope this bookstore takes off. It has so much potential to be a center for community, a place for people to share their stories and learn from one another. Beautiful store! A great selection of books by black authors that would otherwise be regulated to an obscure stack at the back of a chain store if curated at all. I hope I'll one day get to go to an event there since the aesthetic of the store is so nice. The owner himself rang up my purchase and was super helpful. I stumbled upon Resist Booksellers on Independent Bookstore Day, and I'm so glad I did- it's a gem! My partner and I were warmly welcomed at this family-owned business, and we had a great time exploring their wide range of books. They've got something for everyone, from kids to adults. A bunch of their literature touches on relevant issues- racism, colorism, queer struggles, socio-economic challenges- as well as having really intriguing stories and fun reads, too. It's a little bit of a drive into Petersburg, but we will definitely be back! I highly recommend a visit here- invest in Independent, local bookstores!!!
