We tried both the white and red wine flights so we could sample everything before choosing a bottle. The Cab Franc was our favorite, and we took a bottle home to finish later. All wines are bottled on site. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas, which is great to know for future visits. The property also has a working farm with Dutch Belted cattle (beautiful animals with a striking white band) and Idaho Pasture Pigs raised without corn, soy, antibiotics, hormones, or vaccines. We purchased pork chops and bacon to take home, and they also offer skincare products made from farm ingredients, the tallow balm was especially nice. There happened to be a farmers' market on the day we visited, which made the experience even better. We'll definitely be back.

While I was there I met and saw many great artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Robin & Linda Williams, The Mighty Rainmakers, and many more. In addition to the many great concert series performances I also had the joy of seeing the theatrical performance of Stonewall Country every night and working with a wonderful volunteer staff, cast, and crew. Stonewall Country was a great musical about the life and death of Civil War General Stonewall Jackson. Who by the way is buried in Lexington as well in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery off Main St. His horse is stuffed and located in the Virginia Military Institute museum. Since I left my home in Stonewall Country, I have but one concern; That I will never get back home To see the seasons turn. Or the sun go down in Stonewall Country, Pink and flaming red. So, I researched other venues and stumbled upon this place. What I found was amazing. We experienced a string quartet performance in a re-designed barn with amazing acoustics. The executive director was also very helpful, informative and welcoming. When it comes to PGA Tour events, The Greenbrier Classic, last known as A Military Tribute at The…read moreGreenbrier, was on the lower end of the spectrum, hence my two-star rating. There are/were several better tournaments out there. Don't get me wrong - every PGA Tour tournament is great, but relatively speaking, this was one of the less attractive stops on Tour. On April 16, 2020, The Greenbrier put out a press release stating that they and the Tour mutually agreed to cancel their contract which ran through 2026. Traditionally played over July 4th week, The Greenbrier was moved to September in the 2019-20 season (the season's opening event). Due to the scheduling change and move to the new fall date, "the attractiveness for sponsors and the attendance for the fans dropped significantly" according to Greenbrier PR. This was a short-lived tournament, starting in 2010 and ending in 2019. The tournament's first champion, Stuart Appleby, set the tournament scoring records which were never broken. The tournament's purse increased to $7,500,000 in its final season which was middle of the pack at the time. Not bad. The tournament drew big names, but not at a high volume. Tiger Woods played in the Greenbrier twice: 2012 (cut) and 2015 (T32). Then again, Tiger also played in the Wyndham Championship: https://www.yelp.com/biz/wyndham-championship-greensboro. The Greenbrier skipped two seasons, 2015-16 due to the 2016 West Virginia flood (the course sustained substantial damage and had to close; it reopened in July 2017) and 2018-19 due to the aforementioned rescheduling. The tournament was held on The Greenbrier resort's Old White course which opened in 1914. It's a TPC course. In July 2019, Golf Digest ranked it the second-best TPC course after Sawgrass. High praise. It's one of four courses at the resort. The resort's "Greenbrier" course hosted both the Ryder and Solheim Cups. The tournament was renamed A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier because of the resort's strong ties to the American military. Jim Nantz has mentioned this on telecasts and you can read details about it online -- the resort houses a formerly-classified underground facility that was intended to keep parts of the US government running in times of emergency. This arrangement was in place from 1962 to 1992. During the tournament, members of the US military would be stationed at a certain hole (or certain holes), some tending to the flagsticks. I thought that was a nice touch and made The Greenbrier unique from other Tour stops.

Always leaning in favor of the PGA TOUR and golf events my nature is to review favorably. In the…read morecase of The Greenbrier Classic - no brainer. This event is as well-presented as any on Tour. I'll begin by answering your question, "Why not 5-star"? Well, parking can be arduous due to limited capacity at the Greenbrier Resort. It's a park-n-ride situation and because the road to the Greenbrier is one-lane there can be delays to and from the event. And the event is slightly out-of-the-way from major metropolitan areas. Okay. So you have to drive awhile and then park to ride awhile. The slight delay is worth it. With weekly badge buying comes the Greenbrier Concert Series. This year attendees see Luke Bryant, Tim McGraw, the Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert on 3 consecutive nights. Terrific stuff. Oh! The golf tournament. There is every kind of accessory and compliment for spectators. Food stands, bleachers, bars & pubs, hospitality (if you lucky enough for a feedbag experience) and plenty of great golf. The Old White golf course looks tremendous this year after a redesign of all the greens. New tees have been added so the pros likely won't sniff 59 this year. And then.... the Greenbrier Resort property. Shops, pools, a casino, restaurants. Don't look at the Greenbrier Classic just a PGA TOUR stop. The place is buzzing with excitement and fun. And stating the obvious: THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!
