It is the first warm weekend of the season so it was a little busy but not too bad. It is seat yourself, and the food has Spanish influence. I ordered a combo meal at the counter (bacon as the main-HELL yes) and that came with fries, salad, and an egg sunny side up. I also was recommended the sangria. I do not speak Polish and luckily the girl behind the bar had some knowledge of English. She was very attentive and helpful. The do accept card which is important since several restaurants in the area do not. I would definitely recommend Bar Szawa to anyone traveling solo or in groups! The beer selection is wide and it keeps flowing until 3 am.

Inside, if you prefer to sit, there is a large restaurant setup, very comfy with an open kitchen, visible to pretty much everyone in the restaurant on the first and second floor. The food was exceptional. It was my first night in Warsaw and wanted to experience a modern take on tPolish dishes. The cold beet soup, beet greens with a quail egg was super delicious. The schnitzel was excellent and it came with unforgettable mashed potatoes and a cold cucumber, yogurt and dill salad. I also tried red Polish wine, a Cabernet. And that too was also very good. Service was super attentive granted I came at 10 o'clock in the evening on a weeknight, and English was spoken fluently by everyone I dealt with. This is a converted factory space , it is in the middle of an island of businesses, so your Uber driver will pick you up about 200 feet to the left of the restaurant as you walk out. We Ubered to the restaurant to walk afterward around the revitalized Praga District. The other clientele looked like trendy office workers so the staff was moving quickly to service the lunch hour crowd. The server asked us if we wanted the regular menu or "the lunch menu". It was lunchtime so we asked for "the lunch menu". We expected the server to return with a menu with lunchtime options - but instead less than a minute later the borscht arrived. It turns out "the lunch menu" was a 3-course prix fixe option and borscht was the 1st dish. We probably wouldn't all have ordered it had we understood but it was delicious with a beautiful beet red color and a pleasantly sour flavor. The main was a nice pasta with salmon and the dessert was an excellent pastry. We sat on the patio which was lovely. Very comfortable. Great restaurant with excellent food. In particular we loved our accidental borscht!

The welcoming was kind of jaded, but we were hungry and had patience with the zombie-like service. All of us tried some of the different pierogi (dumplings) they offered: traditional with cabbage and mushrooms, russian style and spinach with cheese. They were all OK and my favorite were the spinach ones. To that we had beer and that was where things started to go wrong. If the food was "traditionally" Polish, so was the service, which could best be described as the one I remember from the worst restaurants during the communist time. This means a minimum of service from an uninterested person that take time. Really strange, as the waitress who served us was probably not even born at the time when that kind of service was kind of common in the eastern countries. One of my friends discovered the opened plastic cover of a toothpick in his beer, and we let the waitress know as soon as we managed to get her attention. Without a flinch, she mumbled something about crediting the beer and just left, taking his beer with her. When we saw her again, we were still a little uncertain about her first comment so we asked, with the intention of ordering a new beer for my friend - but we never got that far. She just repeated that the beer would be credited and left before we had the chance to ask for another beer. As the food was OK, I hope the mishap with the beer and service was just a bad day for the wautress, but having talked to my non-Polish guests about the Polish cuisine and hospitality, Dawne Smaki just left me with a feeling of embarrassment in front of them. The soup had a beautiful almost citrusy taste with sausage and egg. We also got the pork knuckle that comes fried with a salad, french fries and a basket of bread. It's also served with sauerkraut plus horseradish and mustard to dip. Honestly the pork knuckle was so flavorful I didn't feel the sauces were necessary. It is huge!! I recommend getting the smaller size because the waiter offered us 2 sizes and I mistakenly went for the larger one. We couldn't finish all of it! But the food is amazing! There was also some musicians that walked in playing some music which was really nice. They walked around the restaurant. We also go their homemade lemon vodka and it was delicious. My husband and I ordered a couple bottled fruit beverages, an espresso, mushroom and sauerkraut pierogis, a side of cream spinach and blueberry and apricot pancakes for 53 PLN or about $15 US! The quality didn't compare to the Michelin Star, Muzealna, we had the day before, but we appreciated the simplicity of our last meal before leaving Poland. The women's uniforms in the kitchen and how they serve food through the window is reminiscent of the communist era. However, while the food is tasty and likely authentic, ingredient quality is understandably so-so (for instance, the popular veal schnitzel is made of a pressed/formed meat patty, as opposed to an actual slice of veal). I didn't really know what to expect at first, but their fried pierogi and traditional sausage were amazing. Also their compote juice. They have many branches here in Warsaw so you'll find them everywhere. Definitely worth it!
