Have you seen Andrew Zimmern's "Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations" episode of Kraków? This is the restaurant in that episode that shows the making of their famous cabbage rolls (Gołąbki). I was curious about the delicate cabbage leaves that look like the wings of its namesake (little doves or pigeons). It was everything I thought it would be, and more. I'm so glad that we tried them. It's popular for a reason. I really appreciated the fresh mushrooms, and the filling of buckwheat. It made the rolls so light. It felt like comfort food at its best. Very delicious! They can make them gluten-free as well. In fact, the menu has a lot of options for those with dietary restrictions. They'll ask you right away if you have any allergies to certain foods. The service was great. Everything was explained very well. We couldn't pass up dessert. They all looked so good. My husband decided to get the Basque Cheesecake. It's not on the menu, but they'll let you know if it's available by request. I was tossed between the Egg Nog Cake and the Chocolate Cherry Cake. Both have some form of liquor in it. The Egg Nog Cake or Ajerkoniakowy Tort was my absolute favorite of the 2 desserts. I really liked the eggnog filling. I'd think it would be rum (like the Polish Kogel Mogel punch), but we were told that the vodka works better in their recipe. They were right. It's definitely heavenly. Anyone gluten-free this restaurant is amazing! They have an extensive gluten-free menu, including cabbage rolls and pierogi. All but one of their desserts is gluten-free. They have strict understanding of cross contamination. We felt very safe eating here. I have two kids with celiac that were able to enjoy a traditional Polish meal, and did not get glutened. Our third night in Krakow, after a few very good Polish meals, we came to Pod Baranem. This was a cut above. The cabbage rolls were tasty and the accompanying mushrooms delicious. The mushroom soup actually benefitted from being in a bread bowl, because the rye and carraway seeds mixed into the soup and complimented the flavor. Mains were very well prepared, the wild boar in hunter's sauce was meaty and beautifully presented, the pork cutlet appropriately crisp and slightly puffed, only the Bigos was a mild disappointment. And the off-menu Basque cheesecake (thank you Karen V for mentioning it in your comment) was outstanding. Service was not speedy, but the restaurant was full and the servers clearly trying to accommodate everyone including a few very large parties. I just love the homey feel of Pod Baranem, a traditional Polish restaurant right outside Wawel castle and Krakow's old city. The candles on the tables, the pictures on the walls, and the neatly dressed waiters make for a fancy yet unpretentious setting. On top of that, they cook their dishes to order and use organic ingredients, so even though the service was super slow, the quality of food was definitely great. To start, I tried the bigos, a Polish hunter's stew made of chopped meat and sauerkraut. The chunks of meat had a very dry texture, and while the spices used were nice, the flavor of the sauerkraut just didn't meld into the dish. After lots of waiting, we finally got our main courses--the vegetarian stuffed cabbage were packages of cabbage stuffed with a rice mixture, and they came with a creamy, umami porcini mushroom sauce. I also had the roasted venison ("Old Polish style," according to the menu), which was covered in a thick, dark gravy. Venison is quite lean so it tasted rather dry, though the sauce complemented the meat quite well. We also got sides of boiled potatoes and bread to go with the meal. Overall, while the quality of ingredients here was good (and the prices amazing for fine dining), the flavor of each of the dishes felt a little "dead" on the palate and could have been better balanced. But if it's homestyle Polish cooking you're looking for, this is a great place to try it out! read more

I have been living in Krakow for a month and have tried many restaurants in my area. I noticed this restaurant when walking to Wawel for the Corpus Christi procession. I also noticed that Yelp did not have a recent review. Today I decided to go there for lunch. I arrived when they opened at 12.00, and I was the only one in the restaurant until 13.00 when some Polish families came in. I decided to order the Pieczeń cielęca w borowikach (Roast veal with porcini mushrooms). Originally I wanted the boiled new potatoes. but they didn't have them today, so I had fries. The menu reminds all customers that the meals are prepared fresh and therefore take 30 minutes. My meal arrived slightly earlier than that. See the photo for the presentation. The dish was fantastic. The veal and mushrooms were perfectly prepared. The sauce was superb, a creamy dill sauce that ideally matched the dish. The fries were perfectly cooked. In the end, there was nothing left on my plate. The perfect amount of food for me. I saved room for dessert. It is difficult for me to pass up Creme Brulee any time I see it on a menu anywhere, and I wanted to try my favorite dessert in Poland. It was also perfect, nicely paired with Earl Gray tea. With all that in total plus tip, the cost for one person was 100 zloty. A very reasonable price for the totally delicious meal that I greatly enjoyed. I will be in Krakow a while longer, and I will definitely be back here for another lunch. I saw at least 4 other main dishes on the menu that I would like to try. But the veal will be hard to beat. The menu is very large, with a huge variety of dishes to choose from, including vegetarian options and traditional Polish dishes. But the focus of this restaurant is meat cooked to perfection, and I mean all meats: deer, duck, boar, lamb, beef, fish, chicken, and more. I heartily agree that they achieved this perfection. The restaurant is VERY large, able to accommodate very large groups in multiple rooms. The decor is very nice, many paintings and photographs on the walls, a sophisticated home feeling. I dressed casually, as did the other patrons that arrived after me, but I suspect that dinner is a more formal affair requiring reservations. I didn't see reserved parking for the restaurant, but there is "sidewalk" parking along the road, and the nearby side streets also can accommodate more vehicles. If you have just seen Wawel in the morning and would like a fabulous lunch, I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are about to see Wawel in the afternoon, you can easily eat here for lunch and then see the castle. Or make the special trip to this restaurant, it is highly worthwhile. read more

Pod Baranem was our "nice night out" on a recent trip to Krakow - it's Michelin rated and the Yelp scores were good so we thought we'd treat ourselves. First, you'll probably need a reservation as they were very busy even on a weeknight - it seems to be a very popular place for larger groups of business people. We got off to a slightly rocky start - we were seated but then ignored for 10+ minutes (no menus, even) while tables around us were greeted and served. Once they finally got it together, things went smoothly. They have a comprehensive and reasonably priced (at least for US visitors) wine list as you might expect. We started with a bottle of rose, a smoked fish plate and venison pate. Everything is done in house including the fish smoking - my husband said the salmon was some of the best he'd had. I loved my pate too - it was not "too" rich and served with a lovely cranberry horseradish chutney. My next course was a special chicken broth with homemade meat dumplings. Great stock, and the dumplings were a nice change from the usual pasta. For a main, I picked schnitzel and it rivaled some of the best ones we'd had in Vienna and Prague. The Mister picked the wild boar tenderloin as multiple reviews mentioned it and he said it was fabulous. Items are ala carte, so we ordered some beets (delish), sauerkraut (homemade) and boiled potatoes to round out our light meal (ha!). Honestly, everything we had was really, really good. As noted above we didn't have the best start to service and our waiter was inclined to tell us what we "were" having versus what we might like, but it made for an interesting and delicious meal all the same. The overall atmosphere is generally romantic but they stuck us in a back room which really wasn't. Still, if you are looking for a special night out in Krakow, the food here definitely delivers. read more

On my most recent trip to Europe, I wanted to make sure to visit a Michelin rated restaurant in every one of the countries I was visiting. My initial reservation fell through so I accessed the Michelin site to look for other restaurants that were within walking distance to my hotel. Pod Baranem was only a few blocks away from the market square so I was able to easily reserve evening reservations for dinner. What a quaint and comfortable restaurant! Inside, it was a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a fireplace and a small but efficient bar area that contributed a hushed white noise to the rest of the rooms. The waiters and host are extremely attentive and rushed over to take our coats and seated immediately. Pod Baranem has an extensive menu that encompasses various aspects of a traditional Polish fare. What we consider exotic here in the states is standard. The menu is in Polish as well as English for easy viewing. In order for the process to not be as complicated, I requested the advice of our waiter and he advised the following items: Naleśniki ze szpinakiem w sosie serowym Pancakes filled with spinach in cheese sauce -- two thick and cream filled crepes arrived and were probably the best I've had in Europe. They were soft and delicate and I consumed both of them prior to the entree. Big mistake. Barszcz z kołdunami Beetroot soup with savory dumplings -- Absolutely hands down the best borscht ever consumed. Better than the traditional Russian kinds. Remember to order this, you won't be let down. Pieczeń z dzika Wild boar roast -- Delicate and not rough at all. No gamey taste either. Polędwica w borowikach Fillet steak with porcini mushrooms -- steaks are different in Europe compared to the US. They are not fat or blubbery, which is my downfall, of course. But the porcinis added a good earthy foundation and the steak was a standard cut around palm weight. Dufinki Fried potato balls --Amazingly savory puffy balls of starchy delight. Huge portion so bear in mind. Maliniak Raspberry cake --Lovely layered and traditional cake here in Poland. Try it. Tort ajerkoniakowy "Krystyna" Layer cake "Krystyna" --Another traditional favorite. The cakes in Poland are a bit more dense than traditional Parisian cakes and not as sweet. Lovely flavors and textures. The dinners/lunches at many of these Michelin rated establishments easily took 2-3+ hours but understand that meals in Europe are for relaxation, not hurried as they are here in the states. In addition, the loudest people in the restaurant were the American tourists, which was humiliating since the table across from us was getting louder and louder as they consumed more wine and the behavior rude. No wonder American's are stereotyped and I understand. No manners in general is just rude. Rate 10 stars if I could. Our waiter was a lovely person and kept us in good spirits, while keeping comedic to the fact that my Polish sucked big time. Please remember to tip well. Given the lower exchange rate, the wait staff here depend on tips and the service here was top rated. Thank you for our Michelin rated dining experience in Krakow, well deserved!! read more

This has been one of our favorite restaurants in Krakow for over a decade. The prices have mostly remained the same but the portions have gotten smaller which is fine by us as we don't eat a lot in one sitting. They have one of the best tripe soups I've ever tasted and their pork chops and duck breast are always amazing. My husband loves the ribs wrapped in cabbage but it's a little rich for me. We've taken many friends and family there and everyone raves. Definitely worth a visit! read more

The day I arrived in Krakow, my friend and I were starving!! We had no idea where to eat, had some time to kill and wanted something close to our hotel so we stumbled upon this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. This is a charming restaurant and the food is good! It is mostly Polish but they do offer a few other options. The waiters do speak English and help with recommendations. For some reason they all wear red shoes. It's quite inexpensive in Poland so you can get a 3-4 course meal or dishes to share and still be cheap. The restaurant was clean but the wall art was concerning. There were pictures of old women with no bras on and there was one with a man fingering a woman and laughing. Both were quite graphic and gross as they were old people. Not something I want to see while eating. We tried the spinach pancakes, they were ok, I liked the sauce but a little too spinachy. I tried the wild boar & it was lovely! My friend tried the cow tongue and it was disgusting...actual cow tongue with spots and a mushy tongue taste plus way too much horseradish. They served us with a bunch of side dishes mostly potatoes but they were all good. read more

My favorite restaurant in Krakow, especially for Polish food. I lived in Krakow for 8 years, and have been back to Pod Baranem at least once a year since moving to the US. Bottom line, phenomenal service, and delicious Polish food. And when I say phenomenal service, I mean really excellent honest to goodness old-school professional, courteous, un-intrusive service with a heavy dose of sincerity. And when I say delicious Polish food, I mean proper, homemade Polish food made with great ingredients, sticking to traditional recipes. I tend to go for the 'Dania Barowe', essentially the less- frills Polish food I learned to crave since a youngin', but you have to get there before 7pm to get these traditional Polish gems, pierogi, krokiety, galabki with a fantastically rich creamy mushroom sauce... damn I wish tickets weren't so expensive to Europe these days. Nonetheless, the proper dinner meals are super as well, anything from pork to venison, food is awesome. If you only have a few nights here, make a reservation and enjoy Polish food the right way. And seriously, make a reservation. Pod Baranem is written up in the Michelin guide, and since has been packed with European travelers alongside the adoring locals. read more

Hands down my favourite meal in Krakow. We visited Krakow weekend before last and had made a reservation here at the suggestion of some friends. The restaurant was extremely cozy with romantic lighting paired with a pretty lively atmosphere. When our server came by we had not yet decided on the wine so asked for a beer and dirty martini to start. Server: "You want a dry martini, yes?" Me: "No, a dirty martini." Server: "Dir-ty martini? What is that?" Me: "You know, a normal dry martini but with the addition of olive brine." Server: "Um [blank stare]...okay I will tell the bartender." Haha such a funny exchange and I thought that with their passion about vodka, this would be a standard beverage. At any rate, when the drink arrived it was close enough (I think they added lime) and I was happy that they at least tried. As my starter I had the pancake filled with spinach in cheese sauce and J got the Krakow style herring. My starter was the clear winner. The crepe was nice and fluffy and was filled with a spinach soufflé of sorts. Great flavours and a perfect intro to their food. J's fish had good flavour but as it was whole, it was filled with bones so took a bit of work to eat. The jelly that it came with was also a bit strange but tasted nice. Next up were our mains and both were fantastic. I ordered the spare ribs in cabbage leaf with porcini mushroom sauce and a side of the fried potatoes. It was not the prettiest dish but once I took a bite I could not stop. Tender pork that was delicious with the cabbage. The potatoes sounded simple enough but they were so soft inside and the seasoning was wonderful. J's dish was the saddle of venison with forest sauce and a side of fried beetroot. No idea what forest sauce consists of but it was burgundy in colour and tasted lightly sweet and fruity. At any rate, his meat was well cooked and he enjoyed it. The surprise was the side of fried beetroot. I'm not a big beet fan but the server talked us into it and it was such a good decision. The beet flavour was quite light and had the consistency of a relish, making it the perfect companion for the veal. After our success with the starters and mains, we just knew we had to try dessert. We asked for the layer cake "Krystyna" and it was simply perfect. Lovely vanilla bean cream filling layered between moist white cake. After our dessert they brought out flavoured vodkas on the house. It was such a nice touch and topped off our already wonderful evening. We had the best service and incredible food at Restauracja Pod Baranem and even with our pre-dinner drinks and a bottle of wine, we were just below €100 for the two of us. Hope to return! read more

Our Saturday night dinner at Pod Baranem was the best meal during our short weekend in Krakow. The food and service were both exceptional. Here's a breakdown of some of the items we ordered. Meat pierogies - excellent but a bit more doughy than others we have had. Goulash soup - excellent, possibly better than any we've had in Hungary. Pork schnitzel - excellent, certainly better than any we've had in Germany or Austria. I will dream of this dish for years to come. It's advised to book a reservation as the restaurant is very busy. We saw multiple groups of people stop in around 8pm-9pm who were turned away, even when there were empty tables. Booking a reservation was a piece of cake via their website. Would definitely recommend. I wish we would have dined here on our first night because I would have returned for our second night! The dress code is a bit strange. There were tables with patrons very dressed up (suits and nice dresses) and then there were tables with patrons in jeans and a nice top. It varies greatly. I personally wish we had a bit more dressy but I didn't feel underdressed or out of place by any means in my jeans and top. read more

It was just us three ladies holding forth and we ordered a bunch of the specialties which did not disappoint - cabbage rolls, heavenly- I found myself simultaneously stuffing myself and wondering how I can get my mother to make this at home; the duck with apple sauce which I got was sublime. Made reservations for our last meal in Kraków and it was worth it! We ordered stuffed cabbage with mushroom sauce for appetizer and it was very tasty (I think it had a mixture with liver).
