The restaurant has been here ever since I can remember, I believe the business started up 1980 by an italian man and his wife. They have (of course) a variety of pizzas but also many pasta dishes, saltimbocca and dry cut meat. We had to sit outdoor as my father is in a wheelchair and there's no possiblility for him to enter the restaurant, which is a big downer and I hope this can be fixed for our future visits! However, summertime, nice to sit outside. The old italian lady mumbled something about us taking a "big company table" but I explained to her this was the only seating where a wheelchair could fit. We didn't let the unfortunate start and unwelcoming vibe put us down and we ordered a fettucine with proscuitto cotto (boiled ham) and parmesan and a dy cut meat plate for me. The lady served us a kinda boring bowl of salad that we could give a miss but we did LOVED the food. The fettucini was absolutely gorgeous and the dry cut meat as well. The italian man (husband of the cranky lady) happily and literally bounced out to tell us that he'd used a vintage balsam vinegar for my plate- and it was fabulous. He lit up the atmosphere and recognized my father from another visit and stopped for a chat with him. Even his wife cheered up a bit in the end. It would absolutely be a five if we didn't feel "in the way" cause of the wheelchair...

However, I attended a conference here lasting two days and figured that the hotel hosting it would be as good a place as any to spend the night. (It does help your decision making process when the town only has one hotel, period.) The prices are what to be expected in Sweden. PROS + easy to find, just walk straight ahead when you exit the train station + friendly staff + good WiFi + the restaurant did a great job even though we had a few last minute allergy announcements for our group + bathroom in my room was much better than the outdated feel of the hotel let on CONS - the cleaning just wasn't up to par anywhere in the hotel - maintenance needs to check for broken light bulbs more often, I counted 5 in our conference room alone - the furniture & decor is in places mismatched and about 30 years out of date - I would have loved to see more obvious signs pointing you to the correct conference room I would stay here again, if I'm ever in Alvesta. It is absolutely not the worst hotel I've stayed at, but it's not exactly a wow-experience either.

There was a salad buffet with fresh plums which I thoroughly enjoyed - the plums tasted similar to the ones in America but they were shaped and colored differently. I had about 4 in total, they were so refreshing. I didn't love my hamburger and stopped eating it because it was dry, overcooked and not very tasty, so that's another reason why I ate so many plums. We met a very nice gentlemen at the table next to us named Sven Svensson who proceeded to point out the mayor of the city sitting across the restaurant. He also shared some fun facts about Vaxjo which we enjoyed immensely.

During the entite dinner we had excellent service by our waitress. We skipped the starter and had the pike perch and rib eye for main. The pike perch was nice and had delicious sides to it. The rib was also very good. For dessert we had the crème orange and apple compote. The crème orange turned out to be a magnificent crème brulée! My friend ordered dessert wine and a truffle and it was obvious that the waitress didn't have a clue what that was and poured 1,5 dl in a brandy glass! All these dishes, plus wine and beer, 1000 skr, not a bad deal at all!!!

Located just near the farming industry, you get the feeling of being on the country side! Smedjan serves typical dishes from the area, such as Småländsk ostkaka and Kalvdans. They also have a variety of fantastic sandwishes and hamburger. All eat slaughtered and processed by the farmer's owner, so you can't get more ecological than this! In Smedjan, the owners are interested in interior design and you can find a lot of pretty things for your home together with local products, such as jam from Moheda or locally farmed potatoes. Adjacent to Smedjan, lies the company's meat store. In the meat store you find beef, moose meat, rain deer meat, homemade sausages etc. Like I said-DON'T MISS this one.

You order at the bar and pay upfront, before your food is served. Not even five minutes after ordering our food was ready which was the first red flag. We paid over 400 sek for two burgers and drinks and got a fast food quality meal that wasn't worth half that. The bread was stale, the cheese was wrinkled and looked kinda like it had been microwaved and the burger was dry. The fries were unsalted. If they screw up a burger this badly I shudder to think of what their other dishes would be like. Needless to say we won't be back - if you find yourself in Vaxjo when most restaurants are closed save yourself some money and go to a drive through or grocery store instead of wasting your time at the Bishops arms.
