I was really looking forward to this since it had a Michelin star. However, I was disappointed. We only had a one-night layover in Switzerland, and I regret making a reservation for this restaurant. We ordered too much for the two of us. I didn't think we'd be full, but the meat was soooo salty that we couldn't eat anymore. Their comp bread was really good though! The tagliatelle was the worst pasta I've ever had in a restaurant. It was dry, and harder than al dente. The sausage I liked, but it was very salty. Ordering one would've been good enough. The meatloaf was okay, but it was hard to eat since it was also very salty. Having the egg added on was a smart choice in hindsight. The water costed 6 CHF each. $15 USD for water for 2 people (they didn't even refill the glass) is crazy...they didn't mark this on the menu, I would've just drank from the bottle I was carrying around. The Tagliatelle from their own farm & lemon ravioli were fresh made, had great flavor and I loved the pine nuts for texture. The pork ribs were tender and fell off the bone. Came here due to a recommendation from a local, and it was right around the corner from the Widder Hotel where we were at grabbing a drink. We were there pretty late (8:30 PM) by Swiss (and American) dinner standards so the restaurant was pretty empty! The restaurant reminds me of a classy diner. It is pretty small, and I'm not sure if I would recommend this place for a group larger than 6. The tables are pretty tiny, so the restaurant might need to wait for multiple tables to serve a large party. We had the undivided attention of our waitress. She thoroughly explained the menu and made a few recommendations for traditional Swiss options. The cappuccino was delicious, and definitely gave me the much needed caffeine boost. The Fleischkase was made really well. It was the first time I had it so I wasn't sure what to expect! It definitely had more flavor that I anticipated. The sliced veal "Zurich style" (not pictured) was the best dish I tried here. We requested the dish without kidneys, so not sure if that would have made a difference! Racist!! My partner and I attempted to stop in midday for a light snack and glasses of wine as a break from shopping and site seeing. Host was extremely rude and disrespectful. We attempted to order wine and cheese and meats and we were immediately told we could not order a selection of cheeses from the menu! He yelled loudly "we are not serving wine and cheese plates, we are serving lunch." Host continued to speak in non-English loudly about us to other workers while other patrons starred. It's Christmas Eve past 8pm and my husband and I are searching for any dinner place that's open. Almost every restaurant was either closed early or closed for the holidays. came on the recommendation of a friend and dragged 2 more carnivores in tow as I was duly warned that their le grand plat was only available for 2 persons or more! came at opening and the whiff of meats lent a warm welcome at the door, a stark contrast to the frigid cold air outside! came at the right time, we did. plenty of seats even without any reservations but they did soon fill up. the relaxed and friendly bistro atmosphere encouraged banter and that we did aplenty. as it was the le grand plat that we had came for, the le grand plat we got! just a note on the three different pricing, one is for cold cuts only, one is for hot food only and the most expensive price refers to a combo of cold cuts and hot food! being the asians that we are, we only zoomed in on the hot food option under the le grand plat section of the menu. the wait staff were spot on and quick to ask for our drinks preference before we proceeded with our food orders. clearly, we looked like we needed a drink or two! many by the glass, bottle and even magnum options are available, fear not. a nice bottle of 2014 rioja was how we rolled. food is cooked to order and wait is inevitable. so drink we did and bantered till the cows and pigs came to our table together with some bridesmaid in tbe form of creamy spinach and spatzle. spicier versions of mustard is available over and above the sweet ones on the table. the sausages and meat loaves were saltier than what I'm used to. but the beef steak was spot on with a nice coating of their melting herb butter. the veal with brown sauce was a perfect accompaniment for the rather bland spatzle. spinach that would make popeye salivate, provided a good token fibre supplement. oh in case you still didn't know, their le grand plat is free flowing! which was why we were here in the first place! :) and the beauty of the repeat order is whatever you want and not the whole lot, if you don't so wish repeated. so personally, I would just zoom in on the beef steak, although I do like their veal dish for its balanced taste. just remember to cater time for them to cook your repeat orders! time flew by, stomachs inflated and faces reddened, in a rioja way. definitely a good passing of time away from the wet and cold that's just beyond the full view of our window seating. as i write, they are again open for lunch, my stomach rumbles and the tram to rennweg awaits......... read more

As this was our 1st time in Switzerland, we were all looking forward to having our 1st meal here seeing how great the reviews were. However, we were sorely disappointed by the terrible service. When we were ready to order, we turned to approach the wait staff by the name of Samuel as he was right behind us (literally 1-step away from us) as he was stationed there. We tried calling out to him several times (even by his name as we were close enough to read his name tag) and was blatantly ignored. This refusal of service was honestly quite humiliating. It then struck us that he simply did not want to serve Asians. We often hear horror stories of Asians experiencing similar treatment by service staff in Europe, but to experience this ourselves left us pretty shaken and confused. Fortunately, this was salvaged by a younger staff by the name of Jo-an. She was attentive, cheery and gave us her recommendations. We had feedback to who we assumed to be the manager who assured us he will have a word with him. We then later observed that Asians who did not make reservations before coming were turned away on the basis that they were fully booked, while Caucasian couples were invited to wait for a seat (we were seated right by the reception area, so we could hear conversations that took place). Fortunately (or unfortunately), we made reservations which secured us a table. By the end of dinner, Samuel was tasked to settle our bill. We were lucky to have spotted an error of CHF45 at the last minute, upon check the receipt again. This meal definitely left a bitter after taste. We really hope Samuel's attitude is not typical/representative of the general Swiss populace. read more

First off this was the only place open at 8am on a Sunday which is already a huge plus. I had the Eggs Rennweck style which had king crabs, chives, sour cream, and Valais Raw Ham. It was very tasty! The girls working there were very sweet and accommodating too. My phone was dying and they let me borrow a charger while I was there. Heads up when I asked for not chocolate it came out veryyyyyy lukewarm. Not sure if that's how the Swiss like hot chocolate but they were happy to give me a new piping hot one. I don't mind paying more for good food, especially when on vacation, but this place was outrageously priced for mediocre food, at best. My bf and I ordered fries, prime ribs, chickpea curry soup (menu said served with basmati rice), water, and sprite. When our food came out, the glass was filthy (visibly soiled with green stuff), the ribs were served cold, the rice was jasmine and not basmati, which was a blower because I ordered that dish specifically because I love basmati rice. Water is not free (tap water they put in a fancy glass)...cost 6 CHF. Anyway, I give this place one star because the fries were good, but then again I think all fries are good. Side tip to foreign travelers...when you use your credit card, don't convert the currency when given the option at check out, especially if you have a card (like Chase) that charges 0%, or you will get charged a 3.95% conversion fee. read more

The Widder Hotel has an impeccable reputation and the location in the middle of Old Town-Aldstadt is great but the service was extremely poor with a completely flippant (snobby??) waiter both times I've been here. Also I noticed that the clientele is almost always non-Swiss people so why the attitude?? As the place touts a meat speciality menu, we tried the sausages. They were OK--the quality of the various sausages compared to say what you get at Coop is much better but you are paying a 3000-4000% mark-up. The veal Zurich I got once was good but the veal was quite tough and the portion size is laughable. The bottles of red wine we had, one from Tuscany (how can one go wrong here..??) and the other from Zurich, were not good so just stick to the beers. The potato salad wasn't as good (or as unhealthy?) as the one at Zeughauskeller and the salad greens are what you expect of Zurich salads--bitter and sad. They have spaetzle, of course, but I'm not a fan of the concept/food/look/anything about it so that's that. Reserve one of the nice outdoor picnic style bench tables and grab an overpriced drink if you wish. I love the deep green umbrellas and awning of the place but I'm definitely going elsewhere for food (or Old Crow, a total gem a block away). read more

In my experience, it's difficult to get a truly bad meal in Zurich. That said, it's also hard to find a meal in Zurich that's delicious, simply, and straightforwardly prepared. AuGust does exactly that, and they do it with style and flair! Our Rosti was perfect - exceptional flavors and beautifully presented. The Spatzie was top-notch as well. Came here for Saturday brunch (brunch ends at 11am). Loved the look of the establishment. Modern and clean. Location is good and easy to get to. It's connected to a Hotel. Reasonably priced (for CH standards), and the food was good. Portion wise- was fair, not too much and not too tiny (Norwegian Eggs). Would of been nice if they had some table bread because the style of the restaurant, you would think they would. I'd visit again with out of towners for a nice brunch, but I wouldn't come here frequently- once is good to check out. read more

This was a real treat while in Zurich. The place is busy but they were able to seat us quickly. Throughout the meal the service was both friendly and attentive. To drink I had whatever house beer they recommended, and of course it was awesome. I started with the Leberkaese Hunter's Style based on the recommendation of the waiter. I am glad I listened as it was delicious. I've never had Leberkaese before or since, but I would definitely order this again. As my main course I had the Farmer's Sausage with Onion Sauce. This too was delicious. This place prides themselves on their meats and sausages, and I was not disappointed. Zurich is expensive, but I think this place was very reasonably priced consider how good the food was. If I ever get back to Zurich again, I will be sure to go back to AuGust. read more

Opened just recently as part of a Widder hotel, August is open Monday to Sunday from early morning to late night. My favorite is their meat platter- recommended by the waiter as a special dish. The August is part of the famous Widder hotel right in the heart of Zurich. The setting is brasserie like, bright and modern. As the restaurant is not very big tables are placed very close to each other, which some may not like. All the tables have a good view on the open kitchen. Service is excellent! The waiters are attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly. Our waiter Nicolas definitely went the extra mile. On their menu they have a decent selection of wines by the glass and bottles. If you want a wider selection, they keep the Widder's master list at hand! Excellent selection covering all parts of the world with some rarities from Burgundy and Bordeaux. This can get very expensive depending on choice. Food menu is definitely more for carnivorous. Their cold cuts are excellent. You have the choice between different grades and portion size which I think is a great concept. The salads are excellent as well, good choices and if you like sausages there is a decent selection, too. Although one of their signature dish is the meat loaf (Fleischkäse) it wasn't as good as expected. Sure I had better ones! The Zürcher Geschnetzeltes was excellent, tender and not too filling. All in all it was a great experience and pleasant surprise. Not cheap but worth every penny! read more

I absolutely loved this restaurant and even more so the entire staff. As my fiancé and I were tourists in Zurich we were a little confused on how to order the meat platters and had lots of questions. The waitress so incredibly kind and patient and explained everything to us. The meats were absolutely amazing. I particularly enjoyed the salami with truffle and the hot sausage. We wanted fondue for dinner so the manager tried to make a reservation for us at their hotel restaurant but they were closed as it was Sunday. They offered many other options of places to go and try while visiting this lovely city. I will definitely be back next time we are in town! This was our first foray into the dining of Zürich, and it truly started the day out right. My fiancée and I came here during lunch on a Sunday and we were easily seated without a reservation in the primo outside seating. We ordered a TON of food, and everything was exceptional. This is the kind of place you want to share what you get rather than ordering an extravagant entree, because it doesn't exist. With that said, the service was the best I've ever seen! All of the girls working were extremely nice and inviting and interested in our American travel stories. In fact, they offered to take our picture after dinner was served to savor the moment. I'm a little introverted myself, but everyone had a way of opening me up, which is not easily done, so kudos. On top of that, we were given several recommendations of local spots to try and they even offered to set up the reservation for us. To continue the story, we saw one do the girls in the mall a couple hours later where she said, "hello," and chatted even more with us...talk about a great first impression for the Swiss people. Let me start off by saying the food was excellent. The asparagus soup was a little runny, but still tasty. I'm just used to it thicker. Our main meal, dessert, coffee, all excellent. Even the bread was great. But I have to give it 3 stars for the length of time if took to get our food. We sat down at 7:15 and didn't leave until 10:15. And it's NOT that we lingered after dessert - believe me we ate that dessert and drank our coffee and were ready to pay...if we ever found our waiter. Now I do see in the Yelp description there is no outside seating, but we did sit outside along with others and maybe, just maybe this caused a delay in service. Whatever the reason, if you have time come eat here and enjoy your meal. But if you don't, find something else. Cost is high - very high. Like ok, it's Zurich and we know it's high, but this was higher than what I even expected. And we didn't drink anything with alcohol. Waiter and waitress were nice.
