Yelp Review 2026 #48: Housed in an old armory, Zeughauskeller is a popular restaurant for mostly tourists. It does get pretty busy so, reserving a table would be the smart thing to do. Unless, you walk in during odd hours. Swiss food is not popular for being tasty and having bold flavors. Unless you intend to just eat cheese and chocolate, Swiss food is rather forgettable. Highly influenced by German cuisine, expect things like wienerschnitzel, bratwurst, pork shank, etc. Sausage with Potato Saiad: All their sausage is served with potato salad but you can sub it out with French fries or rosti. The sausage was nice. The potato salad was surprisingly good. 4/5 Cordon Bleu: You get a choice between veal and pork. I chose pork. The description on their menu says "tender pork escalope, filled with ham and SPICY Gruyère cheese, fried crispy". There was no spice at all. LOL. The ham was probably 2 thin slices. There are other Swiss restaurants in Zurich that makes better cordon Bleu. 3/5 The service was quite slow. We waited for our server to come over. They sent the only English-speaking server to handle like 7 tables. It's definitely a one and done. Come here for the vibes, not for the food.
Happy to have Zeughayskeller as my last meal in Switzerland! I of course had to go with one of their deliciois sausage dishes served with Rosti It did not disappoint! The popular Wiedikerli dish was pan fried sausage with lean pork, served with savory gravy with a side of Rosti. This was a 10/10 last meal that made my last night. The dessert was mostly okay, basic but I won't discount the main course and the delicious local swiss beer on tap! Looking forward to coming back one day!
We had such a fun evening here. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with beautiful timber beams and the authentic charm of a traditional Swiss-German restaurant. Our group had arranged a set menu in advance, and the rack of lamb was outstanding--easily one of the best I've ever had. The service was friendly, attentive, and exceptionally accommodating of the dietary needs within our group. A wonderful dining experience that combined great food, genuine hospitality, and a memorable Swiss ambiance.

Enjoy the ambiance of the old building alongside the authentic Swiss food!
This place is definitely a tourist attraction, so it's always busy. We were offered a shared table, which we accepted, and the ambiance was beautiful and full of history -- apparently, the building used to be an old arsenal! They have an English menu, and the service was fast, though not very friendly. I ordered a salad and pork shank and asked the waiter if it was crispy on the outside like a traditional Schweinshaxe. He said yes, but unfortunately, it wasn't -- which was disappointing. Also, our main dishes arrived before the salads, and the waiter didn't seem to care. Overall, it was a decent experience, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting once. But I think the constant crowd has negatively affected the quality. I'll probably try another place next time.
This place was a chat gpt find cause I wanted the traditional veal with mushroom cream sauce and rosti. It's a huge place. I was seared at a communal table because my friend and I wanted to do different things in the afternoon. The service was great and it was fun to be at the communal table. I ordered the veal and it was absolutely wonderful! They even give you a small pan with the remainder that you can continue to eat. If you're looking for that traditional food from Zurich, this is a great place!
Zeughauskeller - Zürich Old Artillery Building of Zürich, turned Peaceful Gathering, since 1926. Here, it's not just a dining experience... It's so much more! Zeughauskeller - Old Artillery storage building converted into a place for peaceful gatherings to enjoy great Swiss cuisine and each other's company. I spent some time looking at their delicious dishes and settled on, "Ütliberger Siedwurst" - CHF 29.00 (Served with Mac and Cheese Swiss style and homemade apple slices with cinnamon). It was hot, fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was so welcoming and full of historical archives, including, Live Artillery Grenades. They do ask you, "No smoking in this area please. Live Artillery grenades stored here." They offer plenty of seating and everywhere around you, you can learn about Swiss war(s) history. It was quite a unique dining experience that I haven't experienced previously. After my meal, I spent some time walking around and studying different artillery archives. The staff were great, too. Very attentive to make sure with language barrier, you knew what dish you were interested in. My waitress kept stopping by my table and asking me if I needed anything else and what I think of the dish. The overall experience was great and I would highly recommend it and look forward dining here again.
I went here for my first meal in Zurich. The building was very cool and it was on my walking path tour. It felt touristy so it probably was but that's okay! I got a sausage and the potato salad... which I would describe as a bbq hotdog. The service was quick and I was back on my way. It fueled me for a 20000 step day! You will share a table with our guest, I thought it would be weird but it was fine!
visited this restaurant three times during my stay, both for lunch and dinner and everything I tried was fantastic! - Pumpkin Soup: One of the best I've ever had , light, interesting, and full of flavor. - Chicken Schnitzel with Mushroom Sauce: Perfectly thin and crispy on the outside, juicy inside. The sauce was creamy with a hint of lemon, absolutely delicious! - Rösti: Good but a bit dry for my liking. - Macaroni from their vegetarian options: Made with cheese, potatoes, and caramelized onions. light, comforting, and so good! The atmosphere is super charming, full of character and history. If you're in a small group, you'll likely share a table with others, which actually makes it more fun! We ended up having great conversations with our table neighbors :) The service is a little slow as they are ALWAYS super busy! Can't wait to come back!
Easily the most famous Swiss Beer Hall in Zürich. Very similar to the traditional beer hall in Germany in that there are shared tables, traditional comfort food, quick service, and lots of great beer. We made reservations for our 7:30 dinner which I would recommend because the line for walk-ins was very long when we arrived. Inside is very large, it can host many different sized groups, you can easily find a group of a dozen or more at a table, but we were just a party of two and were sat at a table for 4 with another couple so there is a bit of awkwardness there, but it is nice to sit near other travelers. That is if they are in a talking mood or speak the same language. Our waiter was extremely polite and very helpful with the selections and pricing is also very fair. To drink we had the house lager and it was very good. For our meal, we chose the Sausage Combo Plate and the Wienerschnitzel and honestly both were great. The Wienerschnitzel was especially tender and very large and I was able to eat every bite of it because it was that good. The sausages were also very crisp and tasty and we honestly really enjoyed our meal. It is true that this place is very touristy, but it is also very authentic, traditional Swiss food, but reminds me of Germany most of all and is very similar to the beer halls that we visited in Munich. I would definitely recommend to any traveler to try this place at least once while in town.
Everything was so good! I'm not an adventurous eater so I was skeptical about what to order. My friends and I got plates to share just to be safe and we ended up ordering more food because it was so yummy. The potato salad was so tasty and the sausages were well seasoned. The homemade applesauce surprisingly went well with everything and by itself! The restaurant was very charming and rustic. Dining as a tourist can be intimidating, but the staff was accommodating and made us feel comfortable. A must try if you're in Zurich!
If you want to get the vibes of a rowdy Swiss restaurant, Zeughauskeller is simply a must-go! Tables are super close together and the vibes in this place are loud and bustling. Super delicious schnitzel. I think this restaurant has many great renditions of the classic dishes like schnitzel, cordon bleu, and sausage. I got the schnitzel and it was really delicious-- great crunchy crust, good salty flavor, and it came with generous portions of potato salad and salad. Would definitely recommend! read more

We wanted to try an authentic Swiss restaurant and came upon this place. This place has been around since the 1480s! I'm not sure how much of the interior is the same but it was very cool inside. Our waiter was really nice. I ordered the "Zwingli Sausage". I don't eat much meat but this was really good. My friends got the sausage sampler & this dish that was like Mac & Cheese with a gravy/onion sauce on top. My friends ordered beer and I ordered an apple cider, which was good. They both loved it. I definitely recommend this place for authentic Swiss food! read more

We saw this place was popular so we said let's go during dinner! It was 7:35 pm & there was maybe 10 parties ahead of us & it was pouring rain, buuuut we were excited to try the food. We sat down 30 minutes later next to another couple, which was okay. For food, my boyfriend got the wienerschnitzel with fries and I got the red wine sausage with potato salad. We both thought our food was good, just that the potato salad had a little more salt than I'd like. I enjoyed the atmosphere. It seems like there were a lot of travelers from different areas when we went. Overall, would come back! read more
First time in Zurich and this place was very authentic and delicious! I ordered the Schnitzel and it was really good. Most fried foods can get tiring by the last bite, but this one was good until the very end. The fries were also super crispy and fresh. There was a line to get seated but it's a big restaurant so it moved fast. Service was pretty fast once you ordered. Overall, great experience and amazing food! read more

This was a great "first meal" in Switzerland. This building was here before Christopher Columbus discovered America. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is picnic table on both sides of the alley, some with umbrellas. Walk up and wait to be seated. If they're busy, you may be sitting with strangers. Make a friend. Everything that came out looked great. Hubs had the schnitzel Zurich style and loved it. With veal. I had the Alpine Mac with apple sauce. The apple sauce really balances the flavors. read more
This place looks like it would be touristy but it was awesome! We enjoyed it so much! It is decorated like an old German armory and even has some weapons from back in the day as decor! We sat next to this beautiful wooden clock, great atmosphere. Our server was very friendly. I knew I had to try the German potato salad. My friend had veal sausage and I had a pork shank. Both were phenomenal but the show stopper is the potato salad! Soft potatoes in a creamy mustard sauce. Wow! Beer looked so good but we don't really drink! Definitely recommend coming here if you're in Zurich don't miss this spot! read more
Zeughauskeller has popped up as a well-known restaurant in Zurich that serves traditional dishes. I do wonder if there's generally more tourists than locals but even if you don't like the food, this is a great place to just come and drink beers too. Because of the popularity, you absolutely should make a reservation ahead of time. When we arrived, we were told by the host to line up with everyone behind a yellow line. It didn't matter if you had reservations or not, she was going to come down the line and figure it out. They definitely strive for efficiency here and will seat you with strangers to maximize space. Also, if you don't know what you want, they might come off a bit rude just to hurry you up. So if you get stressed in those situations, come prepared and know what you want to order! We were given English menus and our waitress also spoke English. We first ordered a pitcher of beer (so cheap!) to give us some time to figure out what to eat. Like most Switzerland dining establishments, the prices here are kind of steep but they do give a lot of food so I would recommend sharing meals and appetizers. It seems like it's kind of frowned upon to order less dishes than there are people so I would just get a small appetizer if you're trying to share one meal between two people. I ordered the Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Zürcher Art, which is pan-fried, sliced veal in a creamy mushroom white-wine sauce. It also comes with rösti, which is a traditional side dish, very similar to hash browns but thicker. Don't let the picture fool you because it looks like the serving size is pretty small. But she actually gave me a metal pot that with more veal so I guess it's to keep it warm as you slowly eat. The veal itself wasn't as tender as I'd like it to be but so good with the mushroom sauce. The rösti was crispy and tasted even better with the mushroom sauce. Our table also ordered the Zeughauskeller Kanonenputzer, which was a pan-fried sausage with onion sauce. We ordered the 1/2 meter, or 500 grams, which is good for 2 people or just good to share with the whole group. The sausage was a little dry but not in a bad way. Very flavorful and I think I liked it more than my veal. Overall, great meal, cheap beer, and we left pretty satisfied. I feel like we barely scratched the surface of Swiss cuisine and their menu is big enough where you can order different things each time. I would love to come back and try more! read more

Great place to try traditional German dishes. The restaurant has great decor and service. The meat is slightly dry for my liking. But it's how Swiss people Ike their food: on the dry side. We enjoyed the presentation of the mayor's sword: steak on sword. The beef steak is on an actual sword and served on it. We had a wonderful meal. The kids enjoyed their juices because they were on beer mugs. So they took lots of pictures with it. I liked how the Mayor's sword came with salad, Rosti or French fries, and mustard. Great spot to try out traditional dishes, but be warned that it's a very popular spot and making a reservation will greatly help you and your schedule! You'll most likely be sharing your table with other customers, as they're just trying to pack in as many people as possible, in whatever configuration works! Really cool interior, as the building used to be an armory. There's some leftover artifacts that you can see as you dine. My fiance and I decided to share the Mayor's Sword as it said 'serves 2', but I think you could split this amongst 3 or 4 people! The steak comes on an actual sword, and once they bring it to the table, they cut it off the sword in front of you. Really neat presentation! The Mayor's Sword also included Rosti, a big bowl of Greens Salad, and Potato Salad. We had so much leftover! We also tried their half meter sausage, and that was delicious as well! Great spot to enjoy a variety of dishes! read more
This is a large touristy beer hall/restaurant with lots of typical Swiss specialties. My husband enjoyed Wurst and Rostock while I had a grilled chicken salad. It also features a lot of old firearms which a gun collector might enjoy seeing. Our server was from Croatia and very friendly. Great English. They take reservations which I'd recommend doing in advance as it was very crowded at 7 pm on a Thursday evening. read more

A popular beer hall with a lively environment. Make a reservation if you can and be prepared to possibly share a large dining hall style table with another group! Apparently, the building used to be an armory, so there's some interesting decor scattered around. You can read a brief blurb about the history of the building on the placemat at your table. There's even a dish that comes served on a sword that the table next to us ordered, and it was fun seeing the presentation! Good selection of beers and various dishes. Large serving sizes so be prepared to be stuffed! Overall, a fun spot to have some good comfort food. read more

Carlos was our waiter and he did an excellent job. He recommended an apple ale for Vicky and I went with the local beer. We started with a cup of carrot ginger soup that was excellent. They have a lamb special for the month which I ordered that came with a rosti Green beans. read more
A classic Zurich establishment that is worth a visit just to soak up the history. The beer was excellent and very cheap, potato salad was amazing, but Sausage was rather average. Interesting mustard dispenser. Beware kitchen closes 10pm! read more

Great food, great service, great location. Located in the heart of Zurich. This restaurant is bustling with customers so there may be a small wait if you don't have a reservation. I got lucky with a table upon walkin. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I chose to sit outdoor as it was nice outside! The server was so nice and accommodating. The food came out very quick and was delicious! I love a roasted pork knuckle so I was quite excited to see it on the menu! It was flavorful and very delicious. Not too fatty. The desserts were ok. The strudel was too dry but the walnut ice cream was great ! read more
Very, very good food and the beer matches the food ranking! Know this place will be crowded when you get there and you will sharing a table w some others. Also know this will be one of your all time best meals while in Zurich. Wife had the brat and potato salad and I had the sausage and potato salad. Probably the best meal I have had in some time. Servers were attentive and timely. FYI the onion sauce is the "secret sauce". Get it on a meal of you can! Enjoy! read more

Zeughauskeller was such a neat spot to grab a bite to eat. The building had a lot of old history and artifacts on display. The cozy, old World feel coupled with the lively crowd really felt special. We benefited from making advanced reservations as it tends to be a busy spot for locals and travelers alike. We tried the calf liver with rosti and both were cooked to perfection. We enjoyed some local beer and enjoyed their house special dessert. Pay them a visit - you won't be disappointed! read more

I first came here in 2007, and I am so glad it still remains. An amazing restaurant in a beautiful location. We had to vacate our table by 1830, and I was a little concerned due to slower service - not to worry - we ate and still were out before the reservation for the table arrived. And the food!!!! Even after all this time, it is still utterly delicious. I had the Swiss veal with mushrooms and rosti, and my husband had the sausage. We started with butter lettuce salads, and those are a bit expensive at 8 CHF for lettuce and salad dressing. The mains were priced competitively. Plenty of beer and wine to choose from, as well. The meal was superb, and I look forward to visiting again when it is not a busy Saturday night. read more
Authentic as hell! Delicious. Oh, the interior, wherever you look. Stenciled wood beamed high ceilings, arched windows, decorative framing, wrought iron, dark wood, weaponry old, armor, art, & for some reason a row of modern motorcycle helmets. I highly recommend the traditional veal schnitzel. Ive tried it in three restaurants, and learned the portions are ridiculously large, breading is crispy, and to my taste- could really use a sauce. Good luck with that. Marinara, nope, tomato sauce, nope, red sauce, nope. In exasperation, the waiter brought me catsup. I was finally successful at last restaurant by asking for pizza sauce. (Marinara) This place is continuously busy, service is rapid, they don't push you to leave. Soak it all in. Don't forget a stein o beer. Only thing missing is oompah music read more
Wonderful service and family friendly atmosphere! i will come back here. it is nice and cozy and lots of space. the waiters are kind and helpful the food is good! lots of glizzy bratwurst for all you folks! i got some potato cake thing and also cream chicken and mushrooms. this place is a real gem it's pretty good but for zurich standards make sure to have reservations for dinner! i went for lunch and it was not packed. thsi was the only place that asked for a tip A+ read more
