The night special of asparagus appetizer was shared and the family raves about it. We all had the steak and salad side with a shared plate of fries. The fries were more like shoe string fries and not the typical frites you get around Belgium. I would come back here in a heartbeat but don't forget to make a reservation. This has been one of the best meal we've had for awhile. I read all the review comments so with that in mind I was ready to enjoy, but I'm still quite impressed then the food quality and the service. Tom, and his new helper (previous reviews mentioned that Tom was the only server) were at the right level of friendliness. He gave us great suggestion about the entree (I couldn't make up my mind on either the vol-au-vent or the vegetarian lasagne), the beer and the dessert. The Flamish beef stew is as good as what everyone else has mentioned. I was a bit surprised that there was slight sweetness to it, my husband thinks it's because the need was marinated in beer as Tom mentioned. The chicken in the vol-at-vent was very tender, and I love the small veal meatballs! I see from other pictures that perhaps it used to be served with rice but it now comes with a small side of fries. I would love t have some rice to finish up all the great sauces from the stew and the chicken! The beer were perfect to go with our dishes, and the profiteroles were a great finish. The pricing is very reasonable. Much better than the lunch we had down the street. We will be back later this week to try some of the other dishes! read more

We ate here our last night in Bruges. It was a great experience. We called earlier in the day to make a reservation and they had our table waiting for us when we arrived. The restaurant has a warm and casual feel to it with low lighting and lots of exposed wood. There are upscale touches such as the window signage and the matching red napkins and candles on the tables. We were there on a Sunday night and it seemed like in addition to travelers there were several locals in enjoying drinks. We watched as the owner made two Irish coffees for some locals at the bar and it was mesmerizing. First the whiskey was steamed at their espresso machine. Then, into each glass went a little spoonful of sugar, a layer of coffee, and finally a layer of cream. If we were not so full from our dinner I'm sure we would have ordered one. I would love to go back on a cold evening such as that and sip one at the bar. Anyway, I digress. We wanted mussels and fries as this is a local specialty. The mussels come in a sauce of your choice, either white wine, garlic cream, or garlic cream with pastis, a licorice flavored liquor. We tried the first two flavors and by far the favorite was the garlic cream. I would recommend sharing one order between two people as there must have been at least 60 mussels in each order. We also had one order each of shrimp and cheese croquettes. I had never had these before but they didn't knock my socks off. These were basically a flavored paste with a thin layer of bread fried warm and crispy. I think they were nicely done based on my limited experience with this dish, however I would probably get something different if I were to come again. It's likely a matter of personal taste as others in our party found these to be quite enjoyable. In addition to what we had some other interesting things on the menu included the fish stew special, a Dover Sole fillet, and a Flemish Beef Stew. The restaurant takes credit cards as payment and had no issue with a chip and signature card. If I ever make it back to Bruges again you'll find me sitting at the Diligence bar sipping an Irish coffee. read more

My wife and I were able to get a table early one night (around 630PM) without a reservation. The place quickly filled up after that and people with reservations were turned away. The folks were great - friendly, cheerful, accommodating. My wife had a vegetable lasagna which was outstanding. I had the mussels in white wine and herbs. Both were quite good. We'd recommend this place to anyone. And don't forget to wait until dark to walk the city. Lots of things are illuminated. read more

Absolutely a fantastic dinner here. Being an American we like our cocktails before dinner and their gin and tonic is the best I have ever had. The beef stew (their specialty) and the mussels (huge portion with garlic and cream) that melted in my mouth were delicious and better than anything we had in Paris the week before. I disagree with a review saying service was unkind because they were American, we did not have such experience. Service in Europe is different than the U.S., they give you your space and if you want something you simply ask for something. It isn't them being rude , it's just how it is. We found The owner to be kind and we had a nice conversation regarding on the best time to come to Bruge. The building ,which per the owner was built 900 years ago was beautiful. Now onto the food. I had the mussels .. which was a portion that could have been shared with two people. My husband got the filet minion and frites which he said was delicious. Not the friendliest staff but efficient (which I appreciate). As any foreign travel undoubtedly knows by the time they order a second time, it is not customary to preempt a beverage refill or asking for the check. Belgium is a good reminder of how you are a guest in someone else's restaurant and as such the burden of asking for attention is on you. Ready to order? Wave your arms around. Another beer? Flail about again or else you will not see the waiter again . The bill?.... you know the drill. Anyway, what counts is the food and that was excellent here. We arrived late at our hotel across the street and were hungry. At that hour, our expectations were low. We walked in to the restaurant after 11:00PM and as their last table was leaving. We asked if they were still serving and were graciously seated. Our meal was very good, a hearty local stew and vol-a-vents which seem to be everywhere--but these were a good example with chicken meatballs. The beef stew was the best that I have ever had.. words can't describe but will try- heavy savory brown beer sauce which pairs well with a Belgium Ale and the meat was so tender.....Each bite was better than the next.
