We stopped by at opening (18H) and asked if we could make a reservation for a bit later as we wanted to explore the city a bit more. The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like. The same larger groups we saw waiting for the opening were still enjoying their meals and more wine which was easy to understand. We started with a glass each, but enjoyed it so much we got a bottle. Highly recommend Alte Gutsschanke!

Whenever we eat here we always go with the multi-course tasting menu. The sommelier is extremely helpful with matching topnotch wines with each course. I highly recommend taking a taxi there if you are going to go down this route, as it can turn into a lot of wine. Fantastic food, fantastic service, and an atmosphere that will leave you with lifelong memories.

No fewer than five amuses-bouches ("here's a little something extra from our kitchen") appeared on the table. The food was divine... I really don't have the culinary vocabulary to do it justice in this review. The service was an exemplar of what restaurant service should be. The wine list was unbelievable, and the Pinot blanc we chose was unforgettable. I doubt I'll ever get to return to this restaurant, but I surely would love to go back. It is a bit out of the way (and a key stretch of one of the key local roads to get to it was closed when we drove it), but it is most definitely worth the drive out and back to experience the ultimate in dining pleasure.
