You can't miss it. It's centrally located in the Town Hall Square with views of other colorfully painted buildings. The frescoes of these historical buildings on this side of town are absolutely stunning. The pictures don't truly reflect the full beauty of it all. This restaurant was highly recommended to us. I can totally see why. We were very fortunate to find an empty table for lunch. The outdoor terrace is very popular considering the beautiful scenery around us. The menu has a mix of Swiss German and Italian menu items, as well as an extensive wine list. Yes, it's also a wine tavern (Weinstube). I looked around and noticed that just about everyone was enjoying the St. Galler Gourmet Sausage. It was an easy decision for me. It was served with a seasonal salad and brown bread. That salad was absolutely delicious! I need to find a recipe for this salad & dressing. I could eat this everyday. The sausage was tasty & juicy. This was exactly the kind of meal I was looking for in a local & traditional specialty. I would order the same thing again. I can see why it's so popular. My husband decided to get the Penne all'Arrabbiata with chicken. He absolutely loved the spiciness of the sauce. He seemed very happy with his choice, and kept commenting on it. The service was great from beginning to end. I couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere. There were groups of families and couples all around us enjoying their meal. Everyone was taking in the beautiful weather on the terrace, and having a great time. It's another wonderful experience that will stay in our memories forever. Highly recommended!

America wasn't even discovered then! While visiting Stein am Rhein, my friend and I made this a must-see place. We stopped in for drinks. I had a delicious apple cider, my friend had a local beer. The interior is quaint and cozy, lined with hard wood and tables fit snugly together. I was in awe imagining all the generations of people who ate and drank here for the past six hundred years. Amazing. If you're in Stein am Rhein, make sure to stop by Rother Ochsen and make yourself a part of its historic legacy.

As it was our first time eating raclette, we asked our server to walk us through the menu. Lily was exceedingly helpful in explaining the differences in cheeses and their flavors, and she was also very attentive and checked in on us throughout the meal. I noticed that her welcoming demeanor was also shared by her colleagues who were waiting on the other tables around us. My family took Lily up on her recommendations, and we ordering one Klara and one Willi, each with a side of sausages, as well as one original tarte flambé and one vegi tarte flambée. The food was all very delicious!! My personal highlights from the meal were the sausage dipped in the Willi cheese along with the onions and potatoes that were served with the dish. The tartes also had very thin, yummy crusts topped with raclette cheese. The side of pickles provided a tangy contrast to the rest of the meal which I liked. We ended our meal with a warm chocolate cake and lemon sorbet. I'm not really one for alcohol, so I found the vodka in the sorbet to be a bit too strong for me. However, the chocolate cake with the jam and vanilla ice cream was very good and had just the right amount of chewiness. I wish that I could replace my local Cheesecake Factory with a Raclette Factory instead so that I could enjoy Swiss cheese melted over bread, sausages, and potatoes all the time. Oh well, perhaps it's just another excuse to visit Switzerland again one day :)

All of our food was delicious, but I will say that the garlic bread is SUPER garlicky so depends on how much you like garlic and want to smell like garlic for the rest of your day.
