The wine was excellent, and in America you sometimes can't get even one glass of wine for $11. The veal Gorgonzola-cream dish... To. Die. For. Even if you find that kind of cheese overpowering, it's not overpowering here. It was just the right amount to add flavor but not offend. Highly recommended if that sounds like your thing too. The salmon pasta was in a tomato-cream sauce, and I wasn't sure what that would be like taste-wise. But I took a chance. Turns out that it was pretty good. The salmon was not smoked, FYI, and the sauce provided a needed richness to complement the salmon (which can be a pretty bland fish if left on its own). The taste grew on me, and I wound up eating every bit of it. Portions were very generous! And the side-dish of aglio-olio was one of the best renditions of that dish that I've ever had. First of all, they didn't burn the garlic -- which so many restaurants do -- so the flavor was pure and mild, not bitter. Added to the main ingredients were tiny, slightly spicy red pepper slices, and herbs. It was so good I'd order it as a main dish if I ever return (we don't live in the Netherlands, but if we did, I definitely *would* return here)! But, in all honesty it certainly has potential to be a viable alternative for a somewhat higher end lunch and diner menu. Staff is friendly and efficient and food is great! I had the steak/scampi salad with bread. Enough to have a great lunch. Well balanced with meat, fish and vegetables. The dressing was a bit on the greasy side, but not too dominant. Little did I know this was the restaurant where my Opa proposed to her - what a beautiful surprise!!! The location is remote, peaceful and the grounds of the restaurant are beautiful (including a garden where they grow some of their own produce). The service was attentive, friendly and respectful. We went for the largest tasting menu with wine pairings - the pairings were also very well received (my oma mentioning she did not like red wine much, but after her first taste said "this is pretty good I think I could like this"). The food was truly gorgeous, thoughtful and technique driven without being overbearing. The ingredients were fresh and I still recall (a year later) the langoustine, foie and green apple dish that was the stand out of the night -- that's my kind of surf n' turf. It is experiences like this that remind me why the Michelin guide might be so stingy in cities like Chicago - because the food here was truly on a different level and wildly deserving of a star. The portions are huge so I would go with the SamSam approach which cuts your portion in half for just over half the price. Everything is in Dutch so bring your dictionary. The roasted peppers with tutti fruity appetizer was an unusual collection of flavors but went very well together. Prices are a bit on the high side of moderate but the portions are enough to share and the combinations are worth experiencing.

As I think there is always room for improvement I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 ;-) Nicely situated in the center of Doorn in an old bank (hence the name "De Kluis" which means "safe" in Dutch. The old big safe doors are still visible and give a nice touch to the interior) this restaurant uses the "sam-sam" concept which means you can split two starters, main dishes and deserts in one menu. This gives customers the opportunity to taste a wide variety of food from the menu. "De Kluis" has a wide variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes on their menu so a lot to pick from. We (party of two) had smoked chicken with tomato and pesto and mushtoom salad with cheese as starter and a meat plate for main dish. The chicken was very tasteful with a nice smokey flavour which blended very well with the sundried tomato and pesto. The mushroom and cheese was also a great combination. We were also not disappointed with the main dish which had a nice variety of meat (beef, chicken and pork) served with an eastern flavour. The creme brulee as desert was done the way it should be so no complaints there.. Staff was friendly, efficient and welcoming. Happy to see another place in a small town like Doorn worth visiting.
