I liked Bella italia when I was 14 and thought I was really big going on dates with my high school sweetheart, but I quickly went off it (the one in our town wasn't great, and closed down) we sat at 8.10 with Star Wars at 9, so I was a bit worried. It was quite busy with Christmas parties, and the staff were friendly and accomodating. They chatted at the pass quite a lot, but that really did only seem to be when there wasn't food to cart. I don't really like pizza either, unless I've made it at home or I've had one too many Ona night out- and that's always a Bolognese pizza- which they had! So although I didn't have a sniff of alcohol in me, that's hat I plumped forand it was actually pretty good. My brother had carbonara, which he dessimated, and a sharing basket of bread, which was actually huge. The bread sticks were just bread sticks, but the dough balls were pretty good. All in all, it's not amazing, but it's certainly one of the better options down the street of chains...

No starter and saved myself for the pudding.....Emmmmmm! A pint of Weetwood Cheshire Cat - £3.60 Lamb Shoulder - £16.85 Sticky Toffee Pudding (with dollop of ice cream) - £5.75 OK. The place is a bit pricey, but still enjoyable. The 7oz fillet steak is very very expensive - £25.95. I think I'd want a matured age of greater than 28 days, and per closer to 35.... I am not sure of the age of this steak... I recommend, and would go again.... I found the manager very approachable. OK OK I was with someone who had eaten there many times.... :-)

The beetroot is wrapped & deep fried, quite goat cheesy said my friends. Salmon cooked perfect. Seabass was a few fillets, all with crunchy skins but again, cooked perfect. I asked for a med-well ribeye which came out well done. No matter. It was a nice cut, tender, nicely seasoned. The peppercorn sauce I asked for on the side & it was wonderful. It was more of a gravy then sauce & I enjoyed it. Both deserts were wonderful. The cheesecake our fave. Couldn't taste the mulled wine, which was fine by us. The crust was solid & broke away nicely with a fork & no effort. The main road, depending on direction you're coming from, is very narrow & doesn't allow for 2 cars to pass easily. There are turnouts & many blindspots & corners due to design & landscaping. Will definitely return on my next visit to England.

The Clive is a restaurant and hotel in Bromfield, just outside of Ludlow. Making use of the produce…read morefrom the nearby Ludlow Food Centre, it has an interesting and varied menu. Probably a good idea to book in advance though, the restaurant filled quickly, particularly with people staying at the hotel. The main dining room was modern in décor, with well-spaced tables to suit all party sizes, and some impressive artwork on the walls. The room itself perhaps needed a little more natural light, it felt a little on the dark side. Skipping a starter, we went straight for the main courses, a decent array of different dishes from duck breast to beef, sea bass to cannelloni. I went for the rolled confit of Gloucester Old Spot Pork, with dauphinoise potatoes and black pudding in a jus, with black cabbage salsa. Great rich flavours; a little fatty perhaps, but that is the nature of the dish. The spicy black cabbage salsa cut through the fattiness perfectly, but I couldn't have eaten too much of it, very spicy! My wife had the Bromfield rump of lamb with minted peas and broad beans, with a celeriac and potato gratin; again rich, bold and flavoursome, a good hearty meal. We also shared a portion of seasonal vegetables, which accompanied both dishes nicely. After such rich flavours, I chose a dessert with contrasting flavours, chocolate and salted caramel served in a glass, a match made in heaven! But only when I'd used a teaspoon to chisel through the inch depth of solid chocolate to get to the caramel, a very strange way to serve such a dessert. Wonderful flavours yes, but many times the glass nearly ended up on the floor, as I tried to get through the chocolate! A post meal flavoursome coffee rounded off the meal nicely, as was the voucher we were given to encourage us to return. The staff were knowledgeable, and unobtrusive, but looked a little flustered as the restaurant filled.

One caveat, do try and get an early booking (dinner reservations from 7.30) as you need time to properly savour this menu, allow 3 hours, we were ready to fall asleep in our cheese course as we had woken up at 4 in the morning to drive from London! And no automatic 12.5% service, a refreshing change from London, truly discretionary service charge!

It was (it's currently boarded up) beautifully decorated and refurbished, and in a great location. The wine was excellent, and the beers and ciders well kept. The food on the menu appeared very appetising. Nothing could have been further from the truth. My starter, potted shrimp, was fair but nothing special and made with tinned shrimps. My main, a polenta and mozzarella tower, contained slices of mozzarella so thin and scant as to be effectively non-existent. The side dish of dauphinoise potatoes came in a ramikin the diameter of a thruppeny bit (which they charged £2.50 for). My wife's teriyaki tuna was bordering on inedible. Teriyaki sauce is naturally salty, yet the chef decided to add a good sized flourish of salt on top of the finished dish! The service was just that. A service, really. Nohing exceptional considering the cost of the meal. The wine was awfully good, though.
