Restaurants in Montreal with the name of an Italian region - 2 of 2 I had seen Restaurant Siciliana before. It is on Rue Stanley, not too far away from the Peel Metro Station. Rue Stanley always makes for a chuckle. I have known very few people with that name. However, it's the eponymous name of a (not even) B movie about someone's dangerous pet snake. I looked at the menu board at around lunch time. It seemed like a generic Italian restaurant, with a broad-based Italian menu and not one that was particularly Sicilian. But this was at lunch time, and I was walking down the street with something to do. I returned for dinner another day. Everything at Restaurant Siciliana was sort of perfunctory and ordinary. The interior is old school and has the red and white check tablecloths. The wood fired pizza oven is visible from the restaurant. They seat you quickly and I wanted to sit closer to the back and next to a wall, to which they obliged. Since I could not find a wall outlet, they were willing to charge my phone for me. I did not want a pizza. For that, I might go to dei Compari, which I very much like. I was looking for pasta. Since I couldn't see what it might look like or what others had ordered, I settled on the trio - three types of pasta. I've seen this done before at other Italian eateries and, within reason, they allow substitutions. Here, the wiggle room is not that much (that means no filled pasta or lasagna/e) and there is an upcharge for the allowed changes. I wanted to swap out a pasta with Alfredo sauce and they did so for another pasta that is also on their menu at the same price, but with a $3 upcharge (for U.S., divide by ~1.36). Is that that much of an inconvenience? Everything was ok - one in a Bolognese sauce, one in a rose' sauce, and one in a pesto sauce - except that the pesto sauce was a little oily and didn't sit with me. To drink, I had a ginger ale. I'm beginning to like that stuff. The service was good. It was also expedient, albeit a little reserved. This was a 3-star event and, going forward, I will continue to look for other Italian (and Sicilian) restaurants in the area. I would love to know of an authentic Sicilian restaurant in the agglomeration that is Montreal. The very first Italian restaurant at which I ate in Montreal was just up the street, at Stanely and Maisonneuve. Either a Chapters or a newer building went in. That restaurant was more of a diner, which explains why it wouldn't be there - close to the financial district - anymore. Change can be hard to accept. I remember that that was also the first time I had heard the term rose' sauce. This is what Eastern Canada refers to a pink tomato-cream sauce. The middle-aged dark-haired woman who helped me had to have been from the western part of Montreal or its island, spoke perfect English with mannerisms suitable for an Italian neighborhood the Northeastern U.S., and looked like Kaye Ballard. I would have preferred a restaurant like that to this one for the price-quality rapport of the food and a Rue Stanley/Financial District location. If you are a tourist and your time is metered, I might skip this one. If you are a local, you can try Restaurant Siciliana for pizzas and/or pasta and see if it suits you. read more

Great family friendly restaurant serving up classic Italian dishes in a cosy classic dinning room, with red and white checkered tablecloths. We had pizza (thin and crispy, fired in a wood fired oven), sole francaise (well seasoned, evenly cooked with fresh roasted veg) and a pasta dish. Excellent service, wine and a full bar. This was our first visit to Restaurant Santa Lucia. We wandered in on a busy Saturday evening as the surrounding restaurants mostly had line-ups outside their doors. Santa Lucia only had one table filled, so we decided to give it a try. The interior is really dated, but looked very clean. There was the typical Italian music playing in the background and it had the ambiance of a 70s Italian restaurant. The tablecloths are plastic red-chequered. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. My husband and I asked if the pizzas were big enough to share, so she went and got a plate to show us the size. We decided to share a pizza and a Caesar salad, so she kindly offered to put half a pizza and half a salad on each of our plates. The pizza was really tasty, with a fairly thin crust (just as we like it) and plenty of toppings. We had the Amatriciana which had ham, bacon, onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. It was nice and crisp on the bottom and piping hot. The Caesar salad was fine. It was perfectly dressed and tasted great, by my one complaint was that the bacon bits were imitation. They have possibly the smallest tables you will ever sit around. The tables are so small you have the opportunity to sit so close together that you can have your knees touch the other three people sitting at the table. For an empty restaurant, it was a bit strange. On the positive side, their pasta sauce was excellent, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The Italian salad was also really good. If you don't mind knocking knees, it is worth the trip; maybe just ask for a double table. They also have an impressive wood-fired pizza oven. read more

Sadly, this place has gone way downhill, I don't know what type of palates the people who are writing five star reviews on the pizza have, but the pizza was worse than Chuck E. Cheese and I'm not exaggerating. We've come here many times in the past with the old owners and had a nice tasty woodfired pizza. New owners for a few years and I don't know about the rest of the Italian food there as I couldn't eat but the cheese pizza specifically was horrible. They put orange cheddar cheese on it which makes no sense. Don't go here for Pizza. One of my go-to places for pasta and pizza. Their sauces are delicious and they have a variety to choose from. The price for main dishes vary from around 11-16$ which is relatively cheap for a place in downtown. However, their cakes are very disappointing so it's best to avoid them. The service is quick and the waitress is nice. The place has a cute italian decoration, but it looks outdated. The location is in the center of downtown so it's very convenient to go there. read more

This place should be avoided the service was a total joke. I went there on November 23 with my wife and two young kids. We arrived shortly before a Canadians game was about to begin and the restaurant quickly cleared out so I thought the service should be quick. Alas what came next was a total $#!t show. We decided quickly and placed out menuea on the table, where they stayed for about fifteen minutes. During that time a waitress served us water but wouldn't take our order as she was not our waitress. Eventually an older lady came over and took our order almost forgetting to take mine. We ordered a pizza for the kids, a salad to split between my wife and I and soup for my wife and pasta for me. I ordered mine with white wine sauce. The waitress stated that the soup would take twenty minutes? 20 minutes for a veggies minestrone soup. It eventually came and there were no beans. So the pizza came first after about twenty minutes. During this time the restaurant was about a third full and I walked with my daughter to watch the pizza maker. I thought we would watch him make our pizza but he was idle. It took forever for the pizza to come. During this time some people who appeared to be regulars came in after us and were seated and served before us. After another 15 minutes or so the kids had pretty much finished their three slices and my wife's soup came before our shared salad? My wife said the soup was salty. Then we waited for another 20 minutes during which time I went up twice to check on our food. Then the pasta came at the same time as the salad as we were about to leave. The pasta came with a white cream sauce and was comprised of previously caned seafood. As the kids were getting tired and had not eaten since their pizza about forty minutes prior my wife got up to leave with her. The older waitress yelled across the restaurant asking if my wife was going to pay. Meanwhile. I'm still at the table trying to scarf down my pasta so we can leave. All in all the service was extremely slow, favored regulars, got our order wrong, brought it our in the wrong order, and then lastly were rude, accusing my wife of not paying while I was still there. There should be no reason for any of this. read more

This review is for the pizza only. Been here many times in the past but came back recently and this place is not what it used to be. The pizza is still wood fired but the quality is nowhere near the same. It tasted like store bought pizza that you cook in your oven. Not much taste, doughy, and floppy. Four people were in my party and we all gave up on it. I literally gave our extra pizza to someone on the streets. Looks like new people own the place. They definitely need to perfect their craft and use good ingredients. I will not be back after having been to this place many times. I can't speak for the pasta though. read more

I think they do a very credible job with all their dishes and they have been very consistent over the years. Located on Stanley street they are in the heart of downtown Montreal and within easy walking distance of most of the local hotels. The food comes out quickly from the kitchen or pizza oven; I have found the table service to be very good even when the restaurant has been busy. Ok,ok, not fancy, so what... We went here to some comfort Italian. No it's not al dente, and no there's no olive oil with balsamic vinegar... The pasta, is cooked, the sauce is full of flavour, even the cream sauce is well salted. There is nothing bland and subtle about this place. And I like it that way. All pretence is thrown out the window, all you get is a solid meal at good deal. They have a pizza oven so the pizza crust is done well here. The tortellinis are a little tough and over cooked. The other pastas even though not al dente work we'll with the sauce. I was surprised at how fast I ate it all up, it was tasty. read more

I was happy to randomly try this place after getting back to Montreal on the train. Location is near downtown and I just googled mapped near-by restaurants that were still open late. There are not a lot of pasta dish options, but I got exactly what I wanted. I ordered Penne Romanoff and tasted a bit of the Ravioli Basilicata. They were both tasty, the first one is with vodka sauce and the second one is stuffed with ricotta, tomato and spinach with a pesto sauce. If I have a vodka sauce craving I might come back for it! Santa Lucia loses one star because of the atmosphere + interior. I read good reviews before I went with my boyfriend but hesitated to enter because of very old looking sign and exterior.. We went in, and there was one table of customers. Very not impressive. We stayed because we were tired of looking around for restaurants and hungry for Italian food. We ordered seafood fettuccine with white sauce and Hawaiian pizza. It was very authentic and we LOVED it ! Both dishes were very rich in flavours..! Seafood pasta actually had lots of seafood in it! Some calamari, many mussels, crab meat. It was very creamy and we ate every drop of the sauce with the bun that were given. Pizza was GREAT. Thin dough, rich flavourful tomato sauce, sweet pinapples and ham. Other table ordered two pizzas and it looked like the pizza was packed with meat! It looked very good. Service was not bad. I would give this place 5/5 if they changed the exterior and interior .. to dull and old fashioned. However! GO HERE! TRY THERE AUTHENTIC FOOD! It was so great that my boyfriend and I barely talked to each other while having late lunch :D We kept saying... wow..... wow.. it's so good.. wow... :) Price was around 25 dollars I think. which is not bad at all. But one evening being very hungry, we decided to give it a try because of the good reviews on the food. Well, we sat for 10 mins waiting for the waiter and another 40 mins waiting for the food ( which was good ) in the meantime we went to the washroom and we were both so disgusted with the filth. I loved this place! We are here today and I got the Cappelletti while my husband got a pizza and shared the bruschetta. We each loved our food and highly recommend it. The location was right off the main road, easy to find but not so loud and crowded. It was very clean and beautiful on the inside and I love the brick pizza oven. We ordered a pepperoni sausage and artichoke pizza. it was very good. our seafood appetizer was good too. I like how the wood burning oven is visible. It gives it a cozy feeling. The hipsters haven't invaded this place yet so don't expect anything fancy - the decor probably hasn't been updated since the place opened. It's very mom & pop but that's part of its charm. Food: I always have their pizza - no complaints here. They make it in their wood oven and offer a variety of toppings. The pizzas are cooked to perfection with just a hint of crisp on the outer edge of the crust, the tomato sauce is bursting with flavor yet not at all acidic, and well, the pizza is just damn good. What else do you need to know? Service: It's pretty good though can be slow when they're busy. If you plan to stop by for lunch during the work week, get there before Noon. I remember seeing this place and liked the vibe as it didn't seem pretentious. We ordered a seafood pasta and pizza. The pizza was okay, but I found the crust to be too think. What can you say about Santa Lucia? The place is a dive a gigantic dive in need of the greatest restaurant makeover conceivable. The carpet is so old, they don't vacuum it, the mop it. The tables and chairs are probably older than me. The wait staff is comprised of grandmothers. The pizza guys often stink. There are really old wine bottles in rattan baskets hanging on the ugly walls. The ceiling is a total loss. The whole place says "DO NOT EAT HERE" But you will anyway. Why? They serve what is probably the greatest old-school thick, hot, delicious, cheesy, meaty pizzas in Montreal. Bonus? All baked in one of the rare brick wood ovens left in Montreal. The pastas pretty tasty to. Old school Italian wedding soup. If the 3 cheese pizza doesn't make you want to kick your head back, roll your eyes and let out a huge sigh of orgasmic contentment, then hit the Bolognese pizza, meat sauce, onions, bacon, cheese and a guaranteed mindblowing experience. The place is awesome in its shittyness. But it doesn't stop people from pilling in since 1967. If you show up at 12h05 on a weekday, you're shit outta luck because the place is packed, half the tables already reserved. Try to show up at the very latest 20 minutes before noon. Service is fast and polite. Prices are cheap when compared to the awesomeness you'll be hovering faster than a porn star... well you get the point. read more

Santa Lucia overall was a surprisingly pleasant experience considering when we sat down we were literally the only people in there, no music was playing and the staff were all gathered round the bar at the back of the restaurant hoping the manager would call it a night. The decor is far from a trendy, dimly lit trattoria but there is a certain 'charm' about the place especially after a drink or two. Our waiter was pleasant and chatty, the god father drink was delicious, good bread and pasta. There were a a couple of unidentifiable items in our seafood appetizer which I would not recommend. This place would be a good choice for a group of friends wanting affordable and decent Italian before a night out but not a place for a romantic dinner or impressing parents. read more

Really like this place! Good food, great price and lovely staff. I loved that they start you off with warm fresh bread and loads of butter and our waitress was very lovely and attentive. I ordered the clam pasta with rose sauce which came up to $18 including tip and tax. Although the noodles weren't hand made, the sauce was yummy and they did not skimp on the clams! My boyfriend ordered the manicotti and there was sooooooo much cheese it was delicious! The portions are huge! Hit's the spot: Atmosphere, Service, & Food Atmosphere: Santa Lucia has been occupying it's little corner near Stanley and St. Catherine for quite some time - and it certainly shows. The place is certainly the "old school" dinner other more recent restaurant incarnations try to imitate but fail. In a word "charming". The place however could use a little bit (ok a lot!) of touch up. From the raggedy wine coloured rug, to the creaky tables and frayed curtains - it is very obvious that St. Lucia is in the business of frequent clientele turnover (good luck finding a table during lunchtime - thanks to the crush of business people at that time) Service: The service at Santa Lucia varies depending on the time of arrival. Evenings (3pm and up) tend to find the restaurant almost desolate - and thus the staff (one / two people) being very attentive. Being popular with the business crowed due to its menu and close proximity to many of the businesses in the downtown core - it is very difficult to get a seat (or grab anything to go) during lunch time, so the staff is understandably rushed and brief during those times. Food: You will find many a Montrealer who swears by Santa Lucia's pizzas, pasta dishes and Italian sausages, however for the prices charged the food's quality is not something to write home about (but worth a Yelp review!). Pizzas and calzones are cooked in a stone hearth / oven which gives them an added dash of flavour (watch out, sometimes these are made "more-oily-than-necesarry") and some pastas are even made from scratch. Dishes are served hot, and Santa Lucia makes a great carrot cream soup. Santa Lucia is best for pickup and for when no other places remains open - its quaint charm is slowly fading (along with the paint) however due to lack of up keep. Note: It is located directly adjacent to the Che Pare strip club and La Boom nightclub. Just though you should know! Worth a try when time allows :O) read more
