Walked in for a Tuesday night dinner and was seated immediately! The interior is really big with a lot of tables. We ordered a couple items but my favorite was the monkfish with rice. It was kind of like a soup and came to our table in a large pot with a ladle. The flavors were fantastic, one of the best things I've eaten in Sintra. The service was good, very friendly. We received a free dessert :) The other two dishes we ordered were just okay. One of it was a seafood skewer and the other dish was a grilled cod. Both had a very simple olive oil taste and we requested some hot sauce to go with it. I find that Portuguese food tends to lack salt in general. The menus were outdated and didn't give the food any justice. The menu with prices on it was in Portuguese only so we had to play some matching with the English menu and the Portuguese one to figure out the prices. read more

Local gem in Sintra! This place has the ambiance of a family run restaurant that's popular with both tourists and locals. They only have 1 server who spoke English, so service is a little slow and communication was challenging. that said, we enjoyed our meal thoroughly, especially the seafood rice. After reading reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this restaurant a shot. I was glad to have walked into here to be able to taste authentic Portuguese food. There were so much to offer on the menus so we asked the waiter for suggestions. Whatever we had, it was delicious. We both agreed that the sausage mixed in with olives and potatoes had the best flavoring. We would come back here again. Also they lay out bread, olives, and other appetizers on the table. If you touch it, you pay for it. If you're passing on it , simply tell them and they will take it away to leave to another table. read more

Monkfish rice! Thank you Rick Steves for listing this place. A very cool cute restaurant, near the train station, away from the tourist joints in the historic center. The older lady and gentleman who served me were so nice, so helpful (thank you for speaking English, my Portuguese is horrible). It was filled with regulars, from what I can tell! Even if the restaurant didn't have it's nice ambience and service, I'd still give it high marks for: Monkfish rice. Holy Jesus that was good. We arrived Sintra at noon, so we decided to grab lunch before visit. The menu on window had no English version, we thought this must be authentic, and we saw locals after we got in...lol, this place must be great! The dishes were good and service were great. We were on the way to Pena Palace and wanted to get the tickets in the city vs at the palace (Tip-100x faster!). The official tourist office meter was broken and unfortunately for us @ the 2nd tourist office the lady that could sell the tickets was gone for lunch until 2. (So much for 100x faster:-0) We had an hour to spend so we wondered into Sintra. Apeadeiro was a Yelp find. We walked in around 1 and the place was half full. We were quickly seated and received our appetizers (free). Bread, cheese (so good!), Cod Croquette & Shrimp & Chicken Samosa. Excellent! We ordered the grilled Sea Bass,Fried Squid & Shrimp & #11 (Alheira sausage) with fried egg and fried potatoes. The commentary on the grilled Sea Bass was "some of the best grilled fish I've ever tasted!" Calamari was great, shrimp was ok. I thought the Alheira sausage was some type of breakfast sausage but little did I know that Portugal, in 2011, voted it one of the nation's seven gastronomic wonders. It seems that it's stuffed with garlic, breadcrumbs and different types of meat. Although not what I expected I liked it and thought it was similar to a Cod Croquette & in the comfort food category. We finished with Port and Molotoff (dessert) which was excellent. (Also free) The entire party was happy! Not too many places where you are served starters, dessert & Port on the House! Service was also excellent. Apeadeiro is a great stop for a great meal (& taste of Sintra flavor) before making the trek to Pena Palace or any of the other amazing sites in the area! read more

This place saved the day for me and my wife. A few days ago we were looking desperately for a restaurant that had wine, was showing the World Cup, and accepted credit card. This place checked all the boxes. We came in a little bit after the game started and we were seated in front of a TV. The staff was smart enough to make me happy since I was wearing a Colombia jersey. We were surrounded by a bunch of England fans, but they were pretty nice. We ordered a bottle of our favorite wine, Chaminé, and it was perfect. I ordered a calamari dish and my wife ordered a chicken dish. The food came out quick and it was good. I ordered a small plate, but it was more than enough for dinner. We ate the bread as well, which was pretty good. We stayed a long time as the game went to extra time and the other restaurant patrons were great. There was a good energy in the restaurant as we watched the game. We also ordered a good flan for desert. Our waiter was a great Brazilian girl who brought us some complimentary Port to finish off the night. The bathroom was clean as well and paying off our bill was easy. The location is pretty convenient as well. This place is nice and I would not hesitate to come back and eat here. read more

Heads Up: they bring appetizers to the table and unless you tell them you don't want it, you will be charged for each item! We overhead another tourist couple asking what the additional charges were on their bill... Good thing we paid attention! They brought out olives, cheese, empanadas, and bread to the table without us asking and not wanting to be in the same predicament, we asked the waitress if they were free. She said no, they aren't free and you're charged for what you eat. So, we sent back a few items and just kept the bread and olives! I ordered the steak with veggies and potato. When I saw the cut of meat, I was wary, as this cut is known for being tough but! Happy surprise! It was tender and flavorful! It came with a herb olive oil sauce but it actually didn't need it. It did taste good with it though! We also got the alentejana sopa and it was delicious! We asked for the half bottle size if wine which we saw on another table. We asked the waitress about it and she said it was the house wine, $7. Perfect. Portugal has fresh orange in season and orange juice is everywhere, so I ordered one. It was $2.50 and good! At the end, they bring you complimentary port wine! And a dessert! No wonder locals and tourists alike eat here! Good food, good service, good location. read more

This restaurant is family owned and was established in 1970. Was taken here by the tourist guide. Food was really good. Ordered one of the best dishes, grilled cod. Be mindful, when small dishes presented in front of you, such as olives, bread, butter; they are not free. One of the wait staff, an older gentleman was a little rude or maybe just how he speaks. I ordered a little slower since the English menu doesn't have price. He was out of patience while I was comparing price to the food. I do have to say the owners were nice. This place came highly recommended but we were highly disappointed. The staff is rude and all but absent most of the dinner. The food took over an hour and was OK. This restaurant was chosen by our tour guide on our Sintra tour and I must say it was a great way to experience traditional Poetugeae cuisine. The restaurant is run by a family and a kind older lady served us while also recommending dishes through our tour guides translation. The good - the place has been around since the 70's but they got Wi-Fi! - delicious food that is simple and fresh! - the portion sizes are huge, you may only need 1 dish for 2 people - delicious Porto wine...when you hear green wine it's actually white wine but because the grapes are green that's where the name comes from The bad - very few servers spoke English so you can probably get by with hand gestures and signals - the bread was stored in the drawer of a chest in the center of the restaurants, my Western thoughts couldn't help but drift to thoughts of cleanliness and germs :S - tourist trap : the table will have bread, olives and cheese and if you eat them you are charged full price for it so I suggest you tell them no right away...nothing to write home about anyway! read more

I def feel we got treated like second class citizens here. It (service and food) were both so far off the mark from what our hotel and yelpers say. Around us anyone who looked local with a little child was treated w warmth. We went here and there was pushing of the cover food, they forgot the dish for the kid (burger) which delayed us an hour and the service was super snobby. There was little to no apology for forgetting the last dish. They said it was a miscommunication (how? There are 3 people and we ordered 3 dishes). The place felt like a bad version of Katz Deli. The kitchen had ladies with uniforms and hair nets. The place had mostly communal tables. We were excited to try traditional dishes as well as get a taste of the Portuguese warmth, both of which were non-existent. That coupled w the final straw: it's 10:30p and I ask for the bill twice. After the first it seemed she acknowledged me and yet served new diners their menus. I follow up and she's like "si Si!!!!" (Yes yes) like she's Effin pissed off. We were looking for something warm to eat on a windy, cold day in Sintra and happened upon Restaurant Apeadeiro. The menu looked tasty with a wide variety so we went in. My husband had the picanha and I had the beef skewers and they were both extremely tasty! Our service was excellent, the staff was responsive, and we left feeling like we just had our best meal in Portugal. Yes, they bring you the appetizers and you do pay for them if you eat them. Read mixed reviews on Yelp but decided to come here anyway and glad we did. This is authentic Portuguese cooking and family style service. There were tons of locals eating here who were regulars and we really enjoyed our meal. If you are looking for a touristy spot for pizza, chicken fingers or hot dogs, you've come to wrong place. No, they don't speak perfect English and that's ok! Yes, they charge you for the bread, olives and cheese that they put in front of you (if you eat it) and that's ok too. There are plenty of tables and space in between them so you're not cramped. Food is excellent quality and reasonably priced. The best place in Sintra. While its out of the way, it seems to be the least touristy place we could find. We stopped in the evening for queijados, soup, and drinks and returned the next day after seeing all the delicious food being eaten around us. The prices are reasonable, though certainly not cheap. I would give it 20 stars! It is the restaurant of choice on the Sintra Majik tour with lunch, and worth EVERY PENNY! The owners are SO ADORABLE, I wanted to pack her up and bring her home. And the food? OMG! We had their house special bean stew, with everything chock full of huge chunks of every part of pork we love (including pigs feet). Luscious and decadent, a blue collars meal that EVERYONE was having, along with their creamy mashed potatoes. SIMPLY TO DIE FOR. D E L I C I O US!
