We had lunch here today. Our food and service were fine, and the setting is pleasant. What's not to like? One thing that bugs me is when staff decide to mop the floor while I am eating a prime time meal. It can't wait? Also did not care for the margarita, which was frozen style and overly limey. Excellent breakfast option on a Sunday morning. I had the queso de cabra omlette with chileaguas. Nice little corn temal with black beans. The coffee was fresh and they were not shy on service. I also had a jugo verde and it was absolutely wonderful. The sweet breads were a nice compliment. I felt it was very reasonably priced for the location, service and quality at under $200 pesos. Perhaps this restaurant is great on a normal week ( not Day of the Dead) but the reviews were lies. We made a reservation for larger group months ago so they had alot of notice. The manager had one poor waiter assigned to our large table. Shame on him. Nearly everyone's food arrived cold/ had to be sent back..portions were pretty but very very small for the money. We had an amazing meal at this restaurant! Great margaritas, delicious appetizers (we got corn tamales, garnachos and motoles), and our meals were phenomenal. I wanted to love this place but sadly was disappointed by most of the dishes. Shrimp tacos were really good, soups were good and homemade tasting but rest of our meal was lackluster. octopus was bland. mole wasnt very exciting. wouldnt go back. I loved this place! I recommend getting a seat in the patio. Live, romantic music in the patio nightly. By American standard the prices are quite reasonable. Expect to spend about $25-$30 pp for dinner and drinks as of 2019. read more

Really enjoyed our dinner here. It is more on the formal side than the patio cafes, but the food was excellent and the service very nice. The mescal cocktails are interesting and unique. The tamarind one in particular we enjoyed. The appetizers were all outstanding (bass ceviche, shrimp tacos, scallop salad). We tried 4 different moles--all different, and all very enjoyable. They appear to have their own relationship with artisanal mezcalarias in the area and their choices for after dinner were all very nice. Drinks, appetizers, mains, mezcals, and one dessert came out to $30 per person. More expensive than many places, but still a good bargain for some outstanding food with a nice atmosphere in a great location. We might come back here again on this trip. read more

I decided that 4 stars was being a bit generous, but overall I had a solid dinner, and staff was attentive and our waiter was experienced, my complaint was with the restaurant and our seating arrangement and other issues. The drinks were delicious but on the sweet side which I find to be a norm in Oaxaca, I had a fantastic margarita and a pretty solid mezcal cucumber cocktail, the La Cathedral house cocktail was too sweet for my taste, almost like candy. We were also cut off after three drinks by our waiter removing the menu which may be customary here, I'm not quite sure- also we were done drinking so no biggie. The kale apple salad was delicious, the camarones taco was fantastic (both appetizers) After that I had a mushroom soup, way too salty but my wife and I don't use that much salt day to day so it could have been normal- it did make us feel bloated and oversalted. The mushrooms in the soup were fantastic and plenty. After that I had a salmon, and the muscles it came with were delicious but the fish was dry, being one of the pricier dishes on the menu I expected more. My one beef with the restaurant was that we booked it a week in advance from the states and had a reservation. We were seated at a weirdly placed table by the entry door overlooking a cash register, this was the busiest area for waiters. There were two quite charming two tables in pretty areas of restaurant open and when I asked if we can sit there I was told that they were reserved! Well I did have a reservation so what gives? Was the mayor coming or something? The entire hour and a half from first drink to dessert the tables were empty and still unoccupied untill our departure, meanwhile my wife and I were treated to a side table that waiters put right next to ours where they would stash dirty dishes from adjacent tables before taking them back. I was so pissed at that and I even tried to move it since it was in my way of getting up to the bathroom and it was moved back right next to my chair by someone when I was gone. This restaurant looks legit and so I would assume they would not pull this kind of crap on their clientele, and we dropped good money on this joint (about $100 bucks which is ok even for US standards), this was super uncomfortable and unpleasant dining experience and never happened to us anywhere else in a five star joint - to sit by a stack of dirty dishes. In my opinion they need to get rid of that table in the entrance all together, so you don't feel like you're always in the staff's way. For me it's one of the best restaurants in Oaxaca. It's been open since 1976, and no wonder it's still open today. It's not cheap, but definitely worth it. If you make a reservation ahead of time you can sit in their beautiful courtyard to enjoy your meal. My mouth is already watering, so I'll try to finish this review before running downtown to eat something. Breakfast is amazing, try the french toast made with brioche or the waffles. My favorite: Socorrido, trust me you'll love it, if you have a delicate stomach better stick to the omelets which are awesome too since the socorrido has hot peppers, chorizo & chicharron. The service is also great, again the prices are high but you won't be disappointed. If you happen to be in December in Oaxaca, make reservations for New Year's Eve dinner, a bit expensive but the food is exquisite. The only thing is the bathrooms are upstairs, so it's not wheelchair accessible. read more

My only complaint is the small number of tables in the courtyard meant we ended up behind a pillar with a sight line to the door to the banos. Tonight we ate at Catedral and the meal was delightful. The style is formal and classic. There was a guitar player who had a smooth and pleasant voice. The roles served first were little delights filled with a light cheese. My husband and I shared a salad that had cheese filled wan tons in it. The dressing makes a salad and this dressing was perfectly balanced. My husband had the shrimp tacos which were out of this world and our friend had the suckling pig. It was moist and delicious. I had the huachananga. It was very nice. The chocolate dessert was very very good and not to sweet. I would recommend this restaurant highly. read more
