Soft cheese baked right into the roll
Danielle K.

The food here was SO good! We stopped in a little after 5:30pm after an afternoon of wandering the beautiful Jalalatco neighborhood, absolutely famished. People kept stopping in front of the restaurant and taking photos, and we walked up and saw that it was because of the absolutely gorgeous Día de Muertos ofrenda. The interior of the restaurant was just lovely. We ordered our food immediately -- water, because it was a pretty warm day and we were getting dehydrated, as well as the 32 Ingredients Black Mole and the Almendrado Mole. Some bread was brought out for us. The little rolls with a creamy buttery soft cheese baked onto the top under the thin crust were my favorite. So good. The moles were lovely! My almond mole with roasted chicken had a mild, nearly imperceptible spice-- perfect for me. I wished the chicken had been boneless because it was hard to find all the little bones in there while it was swimming in mole. My partner's black mole was outstanding! I wished that was what I ordered, even though I enjoyed my meal too! It was a lovely meal, though service was a little spotty. They were running around and very busy. For the price, I had hoped for a tiny bit more attention, but it was within an acceptable limit. Definitely try this place, just be ready to wait a long while. :)

La Catedral sits close to Oaxaca's cathedral, and this restaurant features an elegant courtyard and dining room, along with refined takes on Oaxacan cuisine. We were started with a complimentary appetizer of shredded chicken in black mole, and a platter of housemade mini bread rolls (pan de yema). The soft bread with its creamy cheese filing was a highlight, and we found ourselves asking for more and more! For our appetizers, we started with the Caldo de Guias, a soup made of zucchini squash/leaves and corn dumplings, served with a small tlayuda (flatbread topped with crumbled cheese and tasajo); and the Quesillo Asado, grilled Oaxacan string cheese with purslane, fava beans, cactus, and a cilantro vinaigrette. For our mains, the 32 Ingredient Black Mole was a complex, sweet, savory, chocolatey sauce with turkey confit, served with fried plantains, rice, and beans. But the highlight was the Oaxacan Platter, which came with a sampling of a bunch of local ingredients including quesillo (Oaxacan cheese), tasajo (salted grilled beef), cecina (grilled pork marinated in chile sauce), chorizo sausage, a chile de aqua battered and stuffed with cheese, and a black mole tamale. Everything on this platter was delicious and unique in flavor, and all the dishes were beautifully presented. The service was also super friendly and attentive, making for a truly memorable dining experience!

Enchiladas en mole

We walked in without a reservation for lunch on a weekday and sat in their lovely courtyard. The service was very attentive and the capucchino, chilaquiles and house enchiladas were all delicious. We tried to go back for dinner but couldn't get in. Next time we'll book in advance!

Me enjoying my chocolate with milk

Amazing.com !!!! The food was amazing. I can't remember what I ordered but the waiter gave us a free taco to try with some cricket seasoning (salt) which was amazing !!!! I got the chocolate made with milk which is great if you like it more milky and the friend got the chocolate made with water to savor the chocolate favor more. Waiter was so nice and explained the menu and why cathedral was so special. The energy there was very lively and fun.

I don't remember what these are called but they were delish!

The food was amazing, everyone in my party of 10 was satisfied with their dish. However, the shrimp taco plate left some of my family members still hungry. The presentation of the dishes was an added bonus. The server was efficient, attentive and helpful as he provided us with appetizer and meal suggestions. We celebrated my aunts birthday so they gave us a complimentary dessert. The ambiance is romantic with dim lighting and a live pianist playing in the background . I will return on my next trip to Oaxaca.

We walked around for an hour looking for just the right first night dinner in Oaxaca. Nothing seemed to hit the right note til we rounded the corner and saw Catedral de Oaxaca. Beautiful courtyard open to the blue sky turning dark at the end of the day. Then the real charm of the courtyard revealed itself. Stunning every where you looked. We started with Garnaches that were wonderful and then had the yellow mole with beef. All exquisite presentations. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. A mistake was made with our order but rather than letting us leave disappointed Joel and his co workers made sure we were delighted at the end. Can't thank them enough and highly recommend this experience

Mole negro with turkey confit

So this is one of the best places in the world to try Mole negro. They serve it with a turkey confit. The sauce is slightly bitter and very complex, it's a 32 ingredient Mole recipe. We did end up going there for a family dinner (cousins wedding was in town). Unbeknownst to us they ended up also catering his wedding! Got to have excellent food twice! They also were able to accommodate our table of 13 diners with an hours notice. I'd recommend checking them out if in town.

Shrimp tacos. Wrapped in a banana leaf. I already ate the first two.

I am so grateful i sat next to Gabriel on a flight from Mexico City to Oaxaca. She told me her family had a restaurant in Oaxaca for 48 years. I looked it up and it was beautiful and with great reviews. I booked a late lunch for 8 of us. We were seated in the beautiful courtyard where we listened to lovely live guitar music. All of us absolutely loved our meals which had original style and preparation. Presentation snd service were excellent. We all agreed it was one of our favorite dining experience and food while in Oaxaca for 6 nights.

Service, service, service! We didn't have a full meal but enjoyed some drinks and a few appetizers. The service, from putting your napkin on your lap, to setup and clearing was really up there. Worth a try and will back to try some more food options.

Enjoying a good dinner at the great "Restaurante Catedral"

Excellent food. Best mole and chocolate. Mole tamales were delicious and very good size cooked in plantain leaves. The place was beautiful and most of the nights we visited they had, someone playing piano or singing. Staff was very attentive all the time. We visited several times. Also very close to main downtown in Oaxaca. Parking lots were also close and available if necessary. Absolutely a place to visit again if we return to Oaxaca. Do not miss to visit this place!!

Food is excellent. Dinner or breakfast. Last night we dined at Catedral. We tried their aqua chili Shrimp & Scallops. It was full of flavor although very light on spice. My husband enjoyed Sea Bass over corn with plantains. I ordered the pork tenderloin mole with a sweet potato mash and roasted apples and pineapple. We both enjoyed our meals. My only suggestion would be to increase their wine list.

This is the best dining experience in Oaxaca. I had the Mole here and it is the best that I have ever had. I am a convert to the cathedral!

The kind of meal that justifies the airfare. Moles are delicate and complex. Service attentive and friendly.
