    Pupusas revueltas.
    Felipe S.

You know the place it's going to be legit when your Salvadoran friends recommend it. Now for the good stuff: The service: even with the pandemic rendering the place as take-out only, I received great vibes and service when I went in to order. You can see the workers enjoying and being proud of what they do and it sure shows in their food. The pupusas: price is very reasonable at $3. They are huge and very tasty without being overly oily. Eat them with the coleslaw and you're in heaven. The fried plantains: I love platanos fritos (patacones) but have a special soft spot for platanos maduros (ripe and therefore sweet). These were the best ice tasted in toronto. Huge portion and caramelized to perfection. This is the type of local small business we need to keep supporting so they can get through these hard times. Will be back very soon to try other things on the menu!!!

TIP: Park at the Walmart...across the street. Otherwise there is limited street parking here and keep in mind there is a bus stop that runs right beside this place, so that even further limits the parking. A solid 3.5-4*, DEFINITELY better than another pupuseria in Kitchener that I went to recently. Pretty authentic, as I did not see a single gringo here. All the patrons seem to be Spanish-speaking. The waitress' English was a bit rough, so that gives me an indication of authenticity. Tamales are PRETTY BIG. I wasn't that hungry, so initially, I was gonna share a chicken tamale. However, the waitress said it was small-medium and indicated more on the small-side with her hands. It was MORE than enough alone...as a complete meal imho! I found the tamales more on the "wet" side. Cheese was salty. I think I still prefer Mexican tamales, but these were pretty good. ***I must mention though that they arrived lukewarm. Definitely not hot, so they needed to be nuked more!*** Pupusas are probably the star here. If you're just a bit hungry, these are the perfect snack. I think I just got a bit too stuffed from the tamale to actually enjoy their pupusas. Splitting 2 pupusas + 1 tamale was a bit much for me. So I'd make sure I was pretty hungry before coming here again. Don't expect a balanced meal here though. It's pretty carby, albeit cheap, so keep that in mind!

So much delicious cheese in my pupusas

Went to place thanks to yelp. This is one of the best Pupusas place I ever went to eat, in Toronto. I order just cheese and pork and cheese. Both had a good balance between corn tortilla and cheese and pork. The only down side was that their hot sauce was not hot enough for me.

Great Pupusas and other essential Salvadoran food! The horchata is also excellent. My favourite Salvadoran restaurant in the city.

What a wonderful surprise!…read more Being an unclaimed business with only one review, there were questions about whether or not this would be successful or worthwhile. The process of ordering felt strange. I thank the previous reviewer who recommended going to the Facebook page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063964563481&mibextid=ZbWKwL I reached out via WhatsApp and asked what was available to order & how this process works. Roberto was SUPER nice, talking me through the process of ordering, payment (via Zelle, Venmo, or CashApp), and pickup. My options for yesterday were seven different pupusas: Chicharrón y queso (pork and cheese), Revueltas (mix: pork, beans, cheese), Frijol y queso (beans and cheese), Solo de queso (only cheese), Camarón y queso (shrimp and cheese), Loroco y queso (Loroco and cheese), and Jalapeño y queso (Jalapeño and cheese). My friend doesn't like shrimp, but I ordered 2 of each anyway LOL We shared the rest and ate our fill - with leftovers to spare! I wasn't sure what Loroco was, so I even learned something new... According to preparedcooks.com, Loroco is a green unopened flower bud. It is quite popular for its use in sauces, stews, and soups. The flower comes from a herbaceous vine known as Fernaldia pandurata, and you can find between 8 and 18 flowers on each plant. Loroco has a very distinctive taste. It tastes like most greens but combined with overtones of nuts. It has an earthy-artichoke flavor to accompany the overtones of nuts. The taste of loroco is best described as a cross between squash and mild broccoli. My friend & I were both pleasantly surprised by the light flavor. We were given a fresh & delicious side to top our pupusas with called curtido. According to TastesBetterFromScratch.com, Curtido is a Salvadoran cabbage slaw or relish made with finely shredded cabbage, red onion, carrot, oregano, and vinegar. House of Pupusas makes their curtido with pickled jalapeños instead of onion - delightful! We also were treated to salsa roja, made with tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, and garlic. The salsa roja was thinner than I expected - more like gazpacho than a traditional salsa - but super tasty just the same. I've only got one photo to show you, because we were so busy "oohing", "aahing", and shoveling all the food into our faces - after deciding which pupusa to try first. While this is my first try of pupusas, I recently also tried an arepa for the first time. Arepas are thick pockets of masa and MUCH heavier than a pupusa. I think I prefer a pupusa because you have a more even distribution of filling to "pocket". The only caveat to this amazing place is that there's no eat-in option. They offer takeaway or delivery. I chose to pick up my order so we could enjoy our meal by the Outer Harbor. Other than loud seagulls and a bit of a breeze, we had the BEST food and a wonderful time catching up. I'm excited to see House of Pupusas grow and flourish. Perhaps they'll open a food truck in the near future. If they do, I'll be first in line ready to tackle another order of EVERYTHING.

We put in an order for Chicharon appetizer, bean and pork cheese pupusas. There is a side of garnishes, mild and hot sauce which we were recommended to try both. The pupusas were good, with the pork one standing out just a bit more in taste, but I wouldn't recommend the bean one (and neither do the locals). The Chicharon fried pork belly with nachos were great and a must have as a shareable appetizer with friends.

Both the food and the beverages were loka! Would be a regular if I lived closer. Pupusa - Beans with cheese - The pupusas are served with a coleslaw of sorts (yellowish, not creamy), a tomato based sauce and a hot sauce. Each of these sauces come very flavourful but together mix well to bring out the flavours of the pupusas. Ultimately, will have to play around to figure out which ratio works best for you. The beans and cheese pupusa was tasty, the two textures blended well and was augmented by the salsas. I only wished the pupusa exterior was crispier. Pupusa - Pork with cheese - In contrast to the beans and cheese pupusa, these were more crispy. Probably because the oils released from the pork made it crisp up a bit more. Unfortunately, I didn't like this one as much because it lacked the creaminess that came from the beans. Might have to try the supreme flavour to get the three fillings. Platano con crema - Perfectly caramelized plantains! I am not a sour cream person, so I skipped the cream, but the plantains by themselves were soft and delicious. Yuca con chicharron - Yuca fries are my favourite form of fries; slightly sweet, fluffy inside and crispy outside. These yuca fries had all these characteristics! Unfortunately, the chicharron was over fried, resulting in chewy, dry pieces of pork. Tamarindo - Lots of tangy tamarind flavour and served in a huge cup. Works well to cut the more fatty and oily foods like fries or the pork Pupusas. Horchata - Milky roasted rice drink was delicious as well. It had lots of roasted rice flavour, but it was also a bit too sweet for myself. Would still recommend to try.

Try not ti order the food eat it in the restaurant instead. The waitress is great and very sweet, she always makes sure the food and ambience is up to par. The music is very enjoyable. I only started going there a lot these last few months. The staff is small but officient the three of them work like a well oiled machine, if you are looking for something quick this is the place to be. HOWEVER the reason I am leaving such a poor rating is because the washroom NEVER works it is always out of survive and when it does it smells if not bad awful. The blue dye on the paper used on the plates and the cabbage comes off on the food that can't be safe. Not only that but most of the time when you make a complaint or a comment nothing changes. The boss is great but has not been in for about 2 months and although he's a great guy but we can really tell how much more relaxed the staff is and sometimes how much better they work together without him there... anyways the food is pretty good do as you please with this information.
