Stopped by here to grab a light lunch and I had a craving for some pupusas. I love coming here! The service is great and you always have a feeling of welcoming when you walk in the door. Of course you have to try the pupusas, but don't sleep on the Platanos con Frijoles e Crema! Fried Plantains with their creamy homemade refried beans and sour cream is out of this world. I ran across a compilation ranking of some of the best restaurants in Wichita, based on 5 Star reviews pulled from Yelp by a local publication (as I recall,,,Wichita EB paper). I decided I would attempt to get around to them, since many are not well known and are off the beaten path. I am a former restaurant owner and highly skilled cook at home, and have written cookbooks (3-ring binder style with recipes and photos in sheet protectors) for family members. In other words I know my way around the kitchen and have operated a high volume, successful restaurant. Today I looked at Usuluteco's menu online and thought it quite interesting to try. I love anything that comes from south of the border, with authenticity, such as Sabor Latin American Grill. And since this restaurant promotes their Pupusas I thought they would be an excellent item to sample. I also decided to try their tamale since that is a good indicator or standard of quality and flavor for Hispanic/Latin American establishments. For the Pupusas, I wanted to sample flavors, so I ordered their Polo (chicken & cheese), their Con Todo (refried beans, cheese & ground pork, and their Camaron (shrimp & cheese). Other than the well made shell which sandwiched the ingredients, they were absolutely flavorless because the fillings couldn't have amounted to more than a tablespoon spread out so thin that you could not taste any of the filling ingredients, with the lackluster but better exception of the Shrimp Pupusas. In the chicken, there was one small piece of chicken about the size of a pea, along with what appeared to be some very finely ground meat. It had no flavor at all, beyond the shell. So you are basically eating something akin to a "round" of plain Pita style cornbread. Same with the Con Todo (beans, pork and cheese). The only meat that I could detect was what might have been very finely ground pork mixed in with a sprinkling of cheese, with no texture or flavor. The shrimp (Camaron) was the only one that had any flavor or texture to suggest there was actually some filling in it (2 small shrimp about the size of penny, one small sliver of green pepper and a tiny sliver of red pepper). Now for the Chicken Tamale. The masa shell had a nice corn flavor as one should expect. It was fairly thick (twice as much shell as filling, in thickness). But the filling, again was flavorless. It had two very small pieces of chicken about the size of a blueberry, with the only other noticeable stuffing ingredient being very soft and small chunks of potato. They serve a sauce (hot and mild). I chose the mild and I don't have a clue as to what it was supposed to be. Extremely thin and flavorless. It could have been diluted tomato juice comprised of 1 part tomato juice and 4 parts water. Even as weak as it was, I drenched my Pupusas with it, hoping to impart some measure of flavor into them. I noticed several diners electing to have some of their large bowls of soup and I wondered whether I should have gotten one instead, but judging by the tamale and Pupusas lack of flavor, that was most likely going to be the case with the soup as well, since they don't have a handle on infusing flavors. I realize that expectations can vary widely and may be strongly influenced by the authenticity of a dish as it is experienced in places like El Salvador, where the cost of ingredients and methods of preparation might prevent the use of costlier ingredients or access to flavorings. So this menu may be perfectly acceptable and highly rated by its target audience. I just wished that it had been a better experience for me, since my cravings for south of the border food are stronger than anything other than Mediterranean dishes. read more

First time eating el Salvadoran and absolutely not disappointed. Cute place, friendliest quickly family service. Hot food and happy price and atmosphere. Additionally, I adore any eatery and food that I can grab with my hands so plus on that. Got the fried plantains with sour cream and a bean sauce. The plantains were super sweet exactly what I was craving after a long drive from Missouri. I also got three pupusas. Which are like filled pancakes for this gringo who had never seen them. Had one with shrimp, one with cheese and pork and one with loroco (which is a native Central American flower that tastes a little bit like a nutty artichoke). Served with red cabbage that you just pile on there and I got a choice of mild or spicy (and POW! There was a kick to that spicy hot sauce) red sauce. No utensils for these and I was yes! I stopped by here yesterday with my wife for dinner. We were looking for a place in Wichita that was close by to where we were whenever Usulecto came up. Since my wife and I had never had Salvadoran before and the pupusas looked good, we decided to try it. The building itself is nondescript and located on S Seneca St. the inside looks like what you would expect from a restaurant, lots of tables and chairs with a couple of booths and a seat yourself sign. What was different about the inside were the two murals on the wall. One was a beautiful picture of a mountain while the other was of El Salvador and the departments of El Salvador. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to split our meals and so went with 4 pupusas and the fried garlic shrimp dinner. The pupusas that we ordered were the queso con loroco, smoked ghost pepper, camaron and pollo. I have to admit that whenever I ordered the queso con loroco, I had no idea what a loroco was. Even after looking at Wikipedia and learning that they were an edible leaf mostly used in pupusas, I still had no real clue. Ironically, whenever the food came to the table it was that pupusa that I cut into first. The puspusa itself was good (if you have never had one before it's like a thick tortilla) and the cheese that was paired with the loroco was nice. As for the flavor of the loroco I would have to compare it to something like a turnip green or a collard green. So a little tart but paired nicely with the cheese. Next up on the pupusas was the smoked ghost chile. You could really taste the smokiness to the cheese and while there was definitely some spice to the finish of the cheese, it wasn't exceptionally spicy. The third pupusa that we tried was the shrimp one. Inside, the shrimp was cooked nicely. Last but certainly not least was what I think was my favorite of the bunch, the chicken one. In addition to the chicken it had some cheese and bell peppers and the chicken tasted like it had been grilled. After my wife and I finished the pupusas we started in on the entree. The shrimp from it was fried nicely and had a slightly sweet taste. However the best part about it was the garlic sauce which both my wife and I loved. As a matter of a fact we pushed some over onto the rice in order to give it some more flavor. Other than the rice there were also some black beans. While the flavor on them wasn't bad they felt a little watery. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I really enjoyed all of the food we had here and it has inspired my wife and I to make some of our own pupusas. read more

Well, since this is the only El Salvadoran restaurant I've ever been in and the only one I have been to twice (evidently that doesn't make me a "regular" yet on Yelp?), I guess this means Restaurante Usuluteco is my Most Favorite El Salvadoran restaurant ever!? I love seeing families here with their small children here, obviously a popular community hangout. Yet there really isn't a specific "children's menu". Just order several of the well made pupusas and cut into smaller pieces. As a mom myself, I don't imagine too many little kids will like the ghost pepper, as it's plenty spicy heat, but I suppose it's all in what one is used to! The soups are just awesome for me - I had beef one time and chicken the other time. My husband loved his meal yesterday so I think we will be back (I came with a friend the first time.). Desserts are not listed on the menu, but I had a dessert the first time (around spring 2016), and I see photos of other awesome looking desserts so they DO have desserts. It is just that yesterday when we were here, there were so many families here when we arrived and before, they had sold out of all their cakes and desserts! I guess that is a good problem to have! I forgot to order the plantains both times or maybe got some last time and forgot I had gotten them. I've had plantains in other places and during a visit to Puerto Rico, so I am sure they are good, too. Nothing wrong with regional variations of food preparation! Was interesting to learn about the chayote squash that was in my soup yesterday. Did some more reading on that, and you all can research on Google as well as I can. If you're looking for authentic cooking and friendly people who love what they are making for you then this is your spot. My go to is obviously always the Pupusas which is what this place is known for. There are different options from revueltas (pork and cheese), frijoles con queso (beans and cheese) to shrimp. The curtido which is the pickled cabbage that accompanies the top of the pupusas is always so flavorful and fresh. There are other options aside from pupusas but don't skip out on the pupusas with a nice soda on the side. The wait staff is always kind and helpful if you get lost in the menu of delicious options. Another try at something new tonight. Salvadorian food. The rice is delicious. The beans have no fat in them and are a little runny, but with some salt they make a great accompaniment to the meal. I had chicken stewed with carrots and potatoes. The gravy was amazing, but they give you two drumsticks. I'm not a fan of dark meat myself,but it came right off the bone tender and tasted great. Although I seen no potatoes and the carrots were very sparse. My son had fried shrimp, which was not breaded and served in gravy. I'm not thinking it was fried. But it was cleaned and large servers butterfly style. The sauce was great. Plantains were a little mushy and greasy but had great flavor. And the papusas. I think could use a little more filling. Upon entering Usuluteco, my family and I were immediately greeted by the owner with open arms and simply said "Please sit anywhere you'd like". I was instantly sold on his gracious and unwavering hospitality. The owner and his son (German and German, Jr.) were fabulous hosts. We ordered our drinks and by the time the drinks arrived we placed our entrée orders. (Side note: The horchada is not an authentic Mexican drink; it is El Salvadoran. If you're used to Mexican "horchata", you will not like Usuluteco's recipe). We all ordered the pupusas (cheese and chicken & cheese). Their pupusas are worthy of serious regard. It is a genuine and authentic El Salvadoran dish and they make it to perfection. And their Carne Asada?! Oh my!! I was talking while taking my first bite and I instantly shut the hell up to bask in the flavors and decadence of the steak. I was literally mesmerized by the lean and succulent meat that the only moving part of my body was my mouth. Everything else was paralyzed. Needless to say, this is a top spot in Wichita for me. I do not know even where to begin. The pupusa's were wonderful. The sauce as with any homemade sauce, varies in heat. Be sure to sample if you don't like hot. The first time I had it it was warm, the next time it was like eating hells brimstone. It is very flavorful however. I had the carne asada one visit and it was the second best I have ever had, but to be honest and fair, the best was on a trip to Mexico and it was made by my friends mother. It is by far the best in Wichita. The only con is the smell of bleach, but hey you know it's clean. The staff waa super friendly and accommodating to out large family. (We have 5 kids).
