4th different location visited and even though this one is a little further from my travel range, this is the most organized and well kept area I've been to. It's large like majority of the Retro Fitness areas, has a large selection of machines and everything seems to be in sync with one another based on where the workout equipment is at. One of my smallest but notable gripes is that the free weights always seem to be all over the place, but here they are racked correctly and in order. It also wasn't absolutely crowded either so getting to where I wanted to go to work out was no issue. This was as perfect as perfect a Gym trip could go. I have been attending Retro Fitness in Oceanside for four (4) years, and I must say it continues to improve when it was already great. The staff is courteous and helpful. The gym is always clean and well maintained. The members are considerate of everyone's space and return the equipment cleaned into their proper space. When the parking lot becomes a little tight, the members are patient and will even direct others for a smooth parking space transition. I have stayed with the same trainer Angelo, through WeFit 360, for the duration of my membership. With medical issues, my doctors could not believe the improvement in my health since my training began. He schedules your sessions according to your availability and always works with you if you require changes. He uses good judgement on how far you can push yourself. Notably, he is a truly pleasant person all around and easy to work with. I have been to quite a few gyms throughout Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn. By far, this has been the best establishment with reasonable cost and quality return on your money. Keep up the good work! read more

I was skeptical to join with the reviewed it closed, turns out it did close for 2 days and "corporate" took over so it's back open again. The gym is inexpensive and you get what you pay for, no frills or fluff but it's close to me, clean, ppl there have been rly nice and there have been notices that the gym is getting upgrades including: massage chairs, red light therapy, redesign of the lay out, classes, more machines etc so looking forward to that! read more

Retro gym sucks all together. During this epidemic two purchases were made on my debt card so I called the bank and they sent me a new one. I wasn't worried about auto pay with retro because of them being closed. Out of nowhere I started receiving calls and a couple letters from a collection agency regarding my bill with them. How would they be attempting to charge me the regular rate all these months if at all anything and then send me to collections before even talking to me personally. Plus the one I can take a 5 min walk to instead of a 10 minute drive, is more expensive because they said they have "towel service and sauna" a bullshit service that they make sound so special. My neighborhood is very nice but the one I'm attached to is more expensive so they call that one Retro Fitness of that neighborhood instead of the one it's really in. Fuck them I'm out. read more

The gym should be a safe space to clear mind and meet goals but my interaction with the gym's staff made me feel uncomfortable and degraded today. Here's how my visit went..... I Went to this gym for the first time to spend time with my brother. The girl at the desk was really nice and helped show us how to complete the guest waiver. I walked in workout bag in hand to the weight area, placing my bag and hoodie near the workout bench I occupied . 15 minutes later i was approached by a male who DID NOT introduce himself but proceeded to yell at me for placing my gym bag on the floor. As I tried to process his attitude and manner I stared at him for a few seconds . In no way am i making this racial but i am a black woman. For a person to immediately address with me attitude is as if it was an expectation that an attitude would reciprocate. He continued to yell at me with an Attitude as if I couldn't not comprehend his instructions to either put the bag in a locker or up front. His tone and manners made me feel uncomfortable and I repeated his request so that he can understand that I heard him clear enough . I said okay without confrontation and he said Thank you very much in the most loud condescending way. I felt embarrassed but I continued to workout to finish my session . Had this "individual" who did not introduce himself as an owner or manager, introduce himself and explain to me the rules and ask for me to place it in a safe location i would have just said no problem and apologized. I had no lock and was unaware of this gym's rules so I took my bag to the front and explained to the girl at the desk what had transpired and asked if should kindly keep my bag upfront until I finished my workout. I was able to continue my workout for 20 more minutes and I just wanted to leave. I left feeling very disrespected and I would not recommend this gym to anyone unless you want to feel like the gum under your shoe. My safe space was overpowered by someone who does not know how to treat his clients with respect and has no desire to neither . Prior poor reviews seem to carry this gym's credibility to the ground. What should have been a good day at the gym with my brother turned into one of the worst experiences of my life in a gym. I was accused of taking pictures of the women there. When I showed the jerk off desk boy my pictures on my phone that the pictures I took were of me and of the gym equipment which I had been posting on social media he then tried to change the story to many women complained and named me when no one even knows me at this gym nor have I ever spoke to anyone or told anyone my name. I had just went through a divorce and was posting pics that I was working out to people that knew me to try to help me get over the mental health issues I was having since my divorce. I recently joined the Gym and I love it. All the people in the gym are so polite and No one makes you feel un-Comfortable. Everyone just goes about their business working out and I just love this Gym. It is Mixed crowd from Young to middle age to Seniors all just trying to make a healthy choice by working out. Bruce the owner is such a kind helpful Man and is always there always offering any assistance you may need. I am so happy I am coming here and I look forward to going all the time. The memberships are so reasonable. and they offer trainers to help you settle in and the cost is not alot at all and they are so so wonderful. I never thought I would actually enjoy going to gym getting into shape???? Guess what I was wrong I love it and hope to continue coming here all the time ... This is your warning. Do not sign up. Signed up for this gym had a week of working out. Everything seemed normal, and than one day for no reason and no explanation I was not allowed back. The only thing that sticks out and is horrendous to say, the day prior I was wearing my necklace with a Jewish star on it. I tried to speak with the managers and owners and no one would tell me why. I think it's obvious at this point. I looked up reviews they have on other platforms and read the real reviews and most recent ones. it's not surprising at all. Front desk lied and said I could finish the month I paid for if I cancelled my membership and then they banned me the day after I cancelled and wouldn't even let me pay for a guest pass. What a SHI@TIEST Attitude from an owner EVER! Haven't been to the GYM in two months, finally got up at 5:30am throw on my shorts and sneakers and made it to Retro in Oceanside. A fairly new member I fell out of my initial routine and decided to get back into it today. After the wonderful front desk girl, I was informed by THE OWNER that I couldn't work our because I had on CARGO SHORTS, freaking really????!!?? I am surprised, however, that Bruce has so much contempt for his employees and customers that he communicated that, not like a professional, but by just putting a sign on the door and having them find out that way. I started coming to Oceanside location just because it's closer to work it's very convenient for me.. overall I love the staff they are very nice and this gym is CLEAN. I Literally have a retro Fitness 500 feet from where I live (queens village) and I rather go here to Oceanside. I had a trainer (Doug) which he was best until he had to leave for a better opportunity.. I got a new trainer and he's great and very patience with me and my co worker. read more

I have been going to this Retro for a little over a year now. When first signing up, I was so happy and had no issues at all. I had just been starting the gym again and felt very comfortable there. Fast forward to a few months ago where it all changed for the worst. They have a room where the classes are held. Knowing there are classes pretty frequently, I always check before I go to the gym to make sure I don't go when there is a class going on. I went to the gym and was pleased to see that I was the only one in the room. After about 15 minutes, an older woman trainer came in with her client. Therefore, only the three of us were in there. She decided to have her client do walking lunges right into where I was working out! It was to the point where I had to move the spot I was working out in. Mind you, if it were someone who needed the space that didn't work there, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but common curtesy goes a long way. She then said, thinking I couldn't hear because of my headphones, she's just doing that for attention. I immediately left the gym and complained to the front desk. Again, this is someone that WORKS at the gym! I'm all about a clean gym, but don't want to breathe in the fumes as I'm breathing heavily through my workout. There have been numerous times when I am working out that someone is cleaning directly next to me, in which I then am breathing in that lemony smell of cleaner. No thanks! Today topped it off for me though. I planned my workout around the 10 am yoga class today. I got there a little after 9 and started to workout in the room. At 9:52 the instructor came in and told us we had 10 minutes until the class started, which I totally understood. But, then she decided to have a very loud conversation across the room to one of the women coming in for the class, while she was standing extremely close to where I was working out. I could hear everything over my headphones! It's one thing if these issues were just with the people working out at the gym, but this is your STAFF. I have complained time and time again but nothing seems to be changing. I am strongly considering switching gyms. Just an update: the ab room as been absolutely disgusting. I was a member of Retro Fitness before Covid and was not impressed by Bruce, the owner, as the other members made it known that he was not a good person and it was so true. I broke my finger in 2 places there, simply because the gym is NOT female friendly....all the equipment is super heavy and the adjustable bench was so heavy it slid down my finger as I was trying to lift it up. Aware of this, Bruce never came over to me to acknowledge it or say he was sorry for my injury. Later, I asked if they could lower the music because it was so loud I could not hear my own music despite my ear buds. I asked other members about it as well and they agreed, but said it doesn't do anything to complain. Well, it did....every time I was in the gym he would look at me and then make the music louder. I had an encounter with a male member who touched my torso and said I had great abs and when I saw him sexually harassing another young woman, I approached him and intervened. We both went to Bruce and informed him and he was able to view the whole thing on video. One week later, I saw that member working out in the gym. I went to the front desk and was told he was still a member. After Covid and the gym reopened, I saw a special on their website with a half price monthly discount. Since my boyfriend worked out there and I had established some friendships, I decided to rejoin at the rate of $9.99 a month. After signing the agreement and paying the fees online on their website, I was approached by the manager during my workout. He told me that they were not honoring the special and had me sign an agreement for $19.99 monthly. A year later, I decided to cancel my membership because the energy in the gym was so negative I could no longer tolerate it and noticed people that I had been friends with also leaving the gym. They were fed up with him as well. I cancelled my membership unaware it was a day after the annual fees, and unaware that $49.00 was taken out of my checking account. I had given the gym permission to take out the monthly fees, but not for any other fees. I went to the gym and asked to return the annual fee as it was only 1 day and didn't feel I should pay for the whole year. I was told to get in touch with ABC Financial and went back and forth with them and Bruce for 3 weeks. Finally, Bruce had his manager call and said he was keeping my $49.00. My purpose here is to for warn people that they are dealing with a very negative person who doesn't know the meaning of kindness, compassion, fairness or anything that can interfere with his greed, sarcasm, nastiness and love in make people unhappy. THIS GYM IS NOT FOR REAL LIFTERS!!! Might as well pay $10 for planet fitness then deal with his retro. The equipment isnt bad at all. The manager is annoying, unprofessional, and rude. And from reading other reviews, apparently so is the rest of the staff!! The manager is the first person (Not even the members!) to complain to you while you're mid-set in your workout about anything and everything. For example, "you're slamming the weights, you need to stop" and "you need to put the bag away" meanwhile my bag contains my lifting equipment. For those that actually know how to lift and do real lifts, stay away from this gym and their negativity. I've had a membership at this gym for over a year. August I had disputed my credit card for an unrelated unauthorized transaction in which a new replacement card was sent to me. While the new card was in transit, my old account was unsuccessful billed for the gym membership. I also contracted COVID which is why never updated my new info immediately. Once I realized what happened, I called the gym to reverse the $20 late fee, I was informed by Bruce to come in to see him or Julie and "they'd take care of it for me". I came in last Saturday and the payment management company was closed but was instructed by Julie (she was wonderful) that the owner overheard our conversation and insisted that I needed a letter from the bank to waive the fee. I reached to the credit card company and they didn't have the ability to do this so I printed out the transaction history of the dispute with corresponding dates into the club but the owner still rejected my best efforts. This is inexcusable and really customer poor service. What am I, a child that need a note from my parents at 55 years old??? It's not like this has happened previously and not once did they make an effort to reach out to me make me apprised there was a problem with account. read more

For starters, you institute a "no-cargo shorts" policy on a loyal, PAYING member? What type of BS is this? And then when you call them out on Bruce's bullshit, he decides to ban you from the gym? My boyfriend and I joined a few months ago at the Freeport location. The facility in Oceanside however was much nicer with a movie room so we started going there. Keep in mind he works out regularly but I insisted he also come with me to train me as I am pretty lazy and have never sustained a membership more than a week or 2 in my life. He helps me with reps on machines and we go on the treadmill together as well. So yesterday we were doing our routine when a worker approaches him and says, "Sir you need to leave". Upon asking why he told us that his boss (the owner "Bruce") watched us at home on his CCD camera and he thinks that my boyfriend is my personal trainer and that is taking away from business. My bf replies, "I am her boyfriend, and she's not paying me to train her" and we are members here. the worker who btw was caught in the middle apologized and said he'd call his boss back and explain that to him. Well he returned shortly saying that Bruce doesn't care and still wants us to leave. My bf asked to talk to him on the phone and like the coward he is refused to talk to him. I understand if he was a personal trainer using the gyms space and taking away from their business if he was charging me for his service, but he is my live in boyfriend, I don't pay him a dime to help me out and we are paying members. As far as I know I have never heard of this happening to anyone. I suppose franchise owners can make their own rules but this one might want to rethink his actions here as my boyfriend is a lawyer. I'd be hard pressed to believe this type of treatment would be condoned by their corporate office. We can easily cancel and join another gym. So not only his actions resulted in him losing $40 a month for nothing since I would never have paid for a personal trainer. But we like the facility and go at least 3 times a week. For the first time I'm sticking to it and ironically he had to convince me to work out with him for free! There might be some nasty legal ramifications for the owner's greedy accusatory behavior. I will update this when my bf meets with the owner in a few days giving this guy a chance to prove his case or repent his actions. If I were him I'd choose the latter. Again...he friggin kicked us out! UPDATE: 3/4 - went back there to work this out. He kept insisting you cannot personal train your girlfriend! He was mean spirited and rude. He said he'd call the cops if we stayed. We served him the papers for legal action and that resulted in him becoming pretty aggressive with us. He said that Corporate told him to kick us out, which is ludicrous since these gyms are owned and operated independently. He's lying. Afterwards he admitted he watched us from the privacy of his own home on camera. How creepy is that? Nothing in the contract states that members cannot help each other work out. He actually called Freeport to warn them about us after the altercation and to instruct them not to honor our membership at our home location!? The balls on him! Fortunately they are on to Bruce and ignored his warnings, welcoming us and saying they get many transplants from that location due to his obnoxious rude behavior. We think he's just using the personal training angle as a false flag for his real intention. He thinks he can hand pick who he wants at his gym, and since it's not our home base he's not losing any money kicking us out. By the way my boyfriend is half Asian and exotic looking (very tan) and not a personal trainer. It also appears to me that everyone I've seen there including staff is Caucasian (hmm I wonder why) Freeport by the way has a personal trainer rule as well, but if you tell them you are not a personal trainer it's enough for them. I have been a valued member for 3 years. I took my cousin who was in from out of town as a guest, I bought a week pass for $30. He is a body builder working on a fitness competition. We respectfully and quietly walked to the back room which was dark and empty for 2 minutes at the end of our workout to get a photo of his progress for his portfolio. The next day we came in for our workout and instantly, rudely and without explanation were told to leave. When asked why, he told us it was because my cousin took his shirt off the day prior. I said, okay, not one employee or manager guided us to read this very long list of rules, and that i had driven a half hour to be there, that we were sorry and would not make the same mistake twice to which Bruce responded, "who the fuck takes their shirt off at the gym".... Hmm maybe body builders documenting their progress, or people who weren't aware that was a rule in the first place being from out of state. Bruce then walked away from me to his office, i followed him to request a refund for the week long pass since he is banning us from coming back after two days when i paid for 7 days, and he SLAMMED THE DOOR IN MY FACE. I have brought so much business to this company and have made exceptional connections with the staff and members. You can see the discomfort and embarrassment on the employees faces while Bruce disrespects his honored, paying customers. Bruce, the owner and manager, is a troubled man who lacks communication skills and compassion. I am genuinely concerned for him but more-so for his staff that half to endure such disdain and negativity, apologizing on their boss's behalf. This poor man Bruce's life must be falling apart to treat the people who pay his bills so poorly. He also mocked people living in island park as if they were beneath him. I immediately cancelled my membership and will not be returning to any retro fitness as there are countless reviews discussing Bruce's distasteful treatment of loyal customers and nothing has changed or been done to address this very important problem that will probably get out of hand one day if he treats the wrong person the way that he does. Truly an awful experience for the first and only time interacting with the owner. He scoffs, he yells, he curses, slams doors in your face because he cannot handle an adult conversation or business reasoning. Never have I been spoken to so disrespectfully. I promised an update as I attended this gym more often, so here it is! So, I'm still a member of this Retro and I still attend fairly regularly. The front desk staff has always been and tends to always be awesome. However, I did experience some unpleasantness from one of the managers when I had some troubling issues with my membership. My barcode was not working because I was being cycled out of the Hewlett location as my home gym to the Oceanside gym (it's a weird automatic thing that Retro does if you check in to one gym more than the other). Whenever this issue arose at the Hewlett location, they would explain the error, say it'd be fixed eventually, and then would let me work out afterwards. At Oceanside, I was given a phone number to customer support, which was unreachable because it was a weekend, and was turned away and not allowed to work out that day because he couldn't confirm I was a member, despite the fact I had been going there often for months. Thankfully, a manager at the Hewlett location helped me once and for all and my barcode now works like a charm. No thanks goes to Oceanside on this one, and I wish they had helped me more and not turned me away from working out on that particular day. It was pretty embarrassing. Other than that unpleasant experience, I still like going here for the machines which are in good working order. read more

You get incredible value for your monthly dues from the facility itself but, Bruce and his staff go above and beyond to give you a great experience every visit. Bruce himself is a great, genuine guy and anyone that says otherwise on here just to be disparaging is lying or a yoyo crybaby that just didn't get what he wanted. If i could give this gym no stars i would. Ive been Retro Fitness member for about 2 years. I have the 19.99$ membership that allows me to utilize any of the Retro locations. I've frequented the oceanside location a few times, only because its closest to home for me. I usually go at nights to avoid the crowd. I've always sensed this certain 'culture' at the gym. As if you had to be a certain race to be welcomed and invited with the same enthusiasm as others. Today i proved that to be correct. I walked into the gym during the day reluctantly. I wasn't greeted like the white members who came in before me. I had to practically force my key across the counter to be scanned. No pleasantries exchanged or the asking of me to hang my keys as the other White members who signed in before me were asked. Anyway idc about that, i start my workout, minding my business wanting to make it quick and simple. Feeling a little awkward being the only black person in the entire gym. Towards the end of my workout- a white worker i believe his name is bruce- because the COPS told me that was his name. YES- i said the cops because he called them on me. He comes over to me and stares at me, and I'm thinking what is he looking at. I say to him yes? He says stop banging ur weights. Mind you the gym has about 50 people in there. And about 10 juice heads and he is all the way at the front desk, but finds his way to blame me. I simply tell him- I'm not doing that and how can you manage to even think its me. He begins to tell me he knows its me and can hear me from the front desk. Okay bruce whatever. I continue and make sure i put the weight down as sloooowwww as possible. I run to another machine before finishing my sets. Of course who comes stomping across the gym. Yelling at me- u didn't re-rack your weights. I was not done with the machine- and couldn't even get out the opportunity to tell him that. At that point i was pissed off, and definitely felt attacked. And i let him know that only to be told if i don't like it i can leave. NO!! When I'm done with my workout i will leave! He tells me fine the cops will drag you out. He calls one of his cop buddies, I'm assuming because it wasn't 911- he spoke the persons name and exchanged pleasantries. At that point i wrapped up my last set, and proceeded to wait by the front desk for the officers to drag me out. He was at the desk and he was talking some crap, telling me "i don't belong here", " this is not my gym". I told him about the membership i had- where he responded " im a moron who cant read, because my contraction states access to other gyms are up To the managers discretion". I immediately tried to reach corporate and got no answers. So i called another location where they denied what he said, and apologized for what i was experiencing. The cops came and i explained all of this. After they spoke to him they simply told me this was dumb and they didn't understand why they were called. And he told them he is the "owner of the location and doesn't want me coming there". Nothing about weights or any other bull crap excuse. Bruce wants TO MAKE RETRO FITNESS - ALL WHITE AGAIN! i know calling corporate will be a waste of time. I would advise any african Americans stay CLEAR OF THIS LOCATION. Cons: missing a Seated Plate loaded row machine for back day, no camera/cellphone vids allowed, and this location does not allow gyms bags of any kind on the floor with you (they will come over and interrupt your set to inform you), parking can be crowded at times and only allows maybe 35 spaces so you will have to park elsewhere where you won't be towed, as gym shares small parking lot with a restaurant. Overall it's a good location for bodybuilding and cardio. I just wish there were individual signs about the "no gym bag on the floor" rule as there are many no camera/cellphones signs. Not a big deal but I've visited over 7 locations now and this location is the only one with these two rules, so be aware. read more

If you are looking for a place to work out with a manger that is rude, this is the place to be. I have been to gyms all over the world and it's sad to say the one in my town is by far the worst place to come to. Mainly because of the manager and his attitude. I also work in customer service and there are ways to talk to people without coming off aggressive and arrogant, which is a crash course he needs to take. Additionally, I know he is going to respond to this comment with some pointless remarks as he has done with others but if 10 people are complaining about your attitude, there is a high chance they are right! read more

I started going to Retro as I wanted to get into shape and realized that I was getting no where fast doing it on my own. I decided to buy a Personal Training Package and was paired up with a Great Trainer, SEB! Not only did he educate me, he got me into my best shape. I haven't felt this good in over 10 yrs. He has helped me with what correct vitamins to take and even went as far as to pick them up for me! He also educated me on the proper things to eat to build and have quick muscle recovery. I found out yesterday that the Owner to Retro Fitness let him go due to some differences Seb had with another Non-Certified Male Trainer and probably his own personal differences he had toward him, which I have witnessed myself (he did not like how Seb utilized the equipment in his gym, he did not want things moved, RIDICULOUS! The gym is very clean but at times it is Lifeless! I feel that Seb brought life in there. The other trainers from what I have seen are not that great. Seb is over qualified and dedicated to his clients. HE HAS LET GO OF THE WRONG TRAINER! Unless he hires Seb back, I will be leaving this Retro Fitness and going to another!!!! read more

RetroFitness is a nice gym facility but DO NOT take advantage of the complimentary personal trainer session. Once you take the class they will pressure you into taking a package which is VERY overpriced. They do not take no for an answer and continue to pressure you into signing on. I do not know how people feel good after manipulating someone to sign onto something they really are unsure about doing. On top of it all, a friend goes the very next day and negotiates a package about 25% less for the same exact sessions. Clearly they take advantage of young teenagers and young adults who are not keen on saying NO or good at negotiating. So wrong! This is really disappointing. read more

I love this gym. The staff are so nice and pleasant. I have made some great gains at this gym. Bruce who is the owner is a very cool guy. Always nice and friendly to me. OWNER is annoying and is the first person to complain to you mid-set about anything and everything. Cons: -Owner will make his presence known in a bad way -no bags allowed in the gym -no chalk allowed -no deadlifting allowed -owner sucks Pros: -clean/newish equipment -nice facility -thats it I literally made a yalp account to leave this review. I've been going to this gym since it first opened. I don't know what the bad reviews are about but people have to learn to follow rules. The gym has rules, follow them and you'll be good. NEVER JOIN THIS GYM. The owner of this gym (Bruce) is DISGUSTING. He is rude and condescending. He treats his long standing members disgracefully. He is a horrible businessman who has no regard or respect for the members who have been with him since the opening of this location. ok gym but VERY UNSANITARY. I signed up for retro fitness a few months ago. within the 1st week I signed up I contracted a bacterial infection that had to be surgically cut open to be removed. $500 later the doctor said it was definitely from germs I picked up using their gym equipment! in 15 years of working out I've never had anything like this happen to me before. I've always washed my hands and showered immediately after working out but somehow I still got sick. when I mentioned this to someone training in the gym he told me that 2 of his friends contracted ringworm from the same gym! I've never felt so skeezed out by a gym before and now I really don't want to go back. what kind of place doesn't wipe down and sanitize their equipment? read more

Go anywhere, but here. If you want to deal with unprofessional, rude, nasty, people who work at a gym, this is the place to go. I was yelled at and disrespected by one of the trainers (Sebastian). The guy seemed like he was on steroids and could not control himself. Very unprofessional! Bruce the owner promised to fire him, but after told me his hands are tied. Now I want to cancel my membership because I don't want to train anywhere that will treat me this way. Bruce once again could not help. Bruce is good at informing stupid rules like having no gym bag on the floor though. Worse gym in town! Bruce the owner even went so far as saying he will sue me for defamation if I let people know the truth. I just thought that was horrible on his part, so I will be leaving more honest reviews.
