Ah, this place reminds me of when I first moved to London all those 8 years ago. This is where I used to hang out with my housemates - seeing the latest films, or watching a gig, or going to a poetry evening, seeing a photography exhibition etc. I love the screens in here for the cinema, I've been to all of them and whether they are the large main ones or smaller screens they're all perfect really - good sound, comfortable seating, what more could you want. I used to have a membership here for the cinema when I was local, which is really good value if you come often as you always get a discount and also free tickets when you join. For non members, they do cheap tickets all day on Mondays - £6 for one ticket, or 2 for £10. This place really is more than a cinema though, it's definitely worth signing up to their mailing list to see all of the different events that they do. It was really sad recently when there was a threat to Richmix and they were campaigning for it not to be closed down. Thankfully they won that one, this really is a heart of the community kind of place and even though I no longer live in Shoreditch I hope I'll be able to come here in many years to come. read more

Completely unprovoked and for no discernible reason, a security staff person came directly to me and nobody else and said, "Sir, can you please leave," while many others were still milling about inside the venue. I did not see or hear him or any other staff person say a word to anyone else. I can't recall anything like that ever happening to me anywhere else in the world. read more

The cinema at Rich Mix was very very very very very warm. So warm that some would even say it was hot. Also the rows of seats are not well staggered, so if there is a tall human-being in front you, that human-being's head will obstruct your view. Lucky for me I am over 7 foot tall. Thanks to Colleen C for the great recommendation - basically I was away from home (i.e my 2 kids) and wanted to seize the opportunity of catching a movie in a really relaxed setting. Situated between Brick Lane and Shoreditch High Street, it's easy to get in and out of and really does have a lovely independent charm. They only (I believe) have 3 screens, but there was a good mix of main stream and arty ones on all week. I chose the new Steve Jobs flick which is well worth watching - a usual fast paced Aaron Sorkin movie, even if it does take a few leaps of faith with the facts... Overall a great place to catch a movie - the lobby to get snacks is upstairs as you go in. Although I can barely forgive the Rich Mix for screening the horror that was The Women, I must concede that its opening on Bethnal Green Road has been a bit of a God-send to us cinematically starved Shoreditch residents. A cultural centre complete with three cinema screens which also plays host to gigs, fashion shows and other events, the Rich Mix is a contemporary, inviting and downright cavernous space near the Shoreditch High Street end of Bethnal Green road. With its sights set firmly on promoting marginalised and up-and-coming artists, the Rich Mix might have been charged with being a bit too avant garde were it not for its ingenious film programme which encompasses both the pop cultural - James Bond - and the niche - case in point, the recent Raj Kapoor season. A fully equipped bar lends the Rich Mix a sophisticated and decidedly adult - no not in that way! - edge. In retrospect, perhaps I should have hit the bar before watching The Women, it would have made that particular blip on the Rich Mix's almost faultless programming record a lot more entertaining. read more

Everything in this place screams Bethnal green, but in the best way possible. Housed in a 62,000 ft garment factory, Richmix opened in 2006 after a full refurbishment of this space and is really is a modern design masterpiece that often (and probably to its benefit) falls under the radar of the masses. It offers creative inspiration in the form of art education, culture and performances in its many guises and also 3 large cinema halls. Not only does it promote the arts to young people in programs and classes, but it also promotes raw talent in design and performance. I came here just for the cinema and found it a wonderful change from the bustle of the West End. We stopped into the cafe for a hearty jacket potato beforehand which was a bit of a mistake: cue food coma. read more

I am absolutely obsessed with this cinema/movie theatre/multi-plex with a twist. It was the welcome addition the area needed pre-2008, which hosts a myriad of cultural, artistic and film related events which never cease to calm my curiosity. There is also an Education Programme in place running a wide range of events and activities for schools and colleges, from weekend film-making workshops to theatre shows. Grub-wise, there is a weekly cafe menu serving hot and cold options (including vegetarian and Halal options), ranging from small salads for £3.50, with hot food of reasonable quality coming in at £4. Screen number 1 gets my vote every time, the geometric wall patterning setting the perfect backdrop for a range of blockbuster and arthouse features. If you're date leaves you waiting in the aisles, get ready for a new retail venture starting in January 2009 with oggleverything bringing a veritable banquet of sophisticated jewellery, bags, hats sourced locally and internationally. read more

Soooooooo much better than the trash bag tourist trap cinemas in Leicester Square. Dont even bother seeing a film any where else, you have to come here. I insist on it! Its not just a cinema, this is a bar / performance venue and a cinema all combined. Shove that in your pipe and smoke it Vue Multiplex hell hole! I loved the decorations in Screen 1. Loved drinking cider in the bar watching the musicians set up. Loved taking my cider to watch the film with me. Loved how the bouncers don't bother searching your bag even on a Saturday night (to get to the screens you have to walk through the bar, so this is a pretty unusual thing) so I could wash down my cider with bagels and cakes from Brick Lane. Not so much love for the lack of toilet paper in most of the toilets though. come on, help a girl out here, a little tissue in a toilet never cost a business all its profits. read more

By far my favorite space to catch a flick in East London... First, let's talk about the superiority of the snack bar. 1. Pick 'n Mix candy! All sorts of total crap to rot your teeth and burn through your stomach lining. I'm on board! I particularly like the sour candies, but they also have quite a bit of chocolatey stuff. 2. Popcorn -- not too heavy, just perfect. 3. Fountain drinks! American sized, it seems. Ok, so you're situated now, on to the movie! I highly suggest ordering tickets ahead of time online and printing them out. The one major mishap at this place is the ticketing/que process because the seats are reserved and the cashier spends about 10 minutes with each person. It is not an expedient process during busy times such as weekend nights. Just buy online, so much better! The theaters themselves (I believe there are 3) are very comfortable. Like I mentioned, assigned seating. Leg room. They often have new releases (not all of them, but usually the "smarter' ones). I've only viewed movies here, but it is a cultural center with art shows, performance art, cafe, and a variety of other things I've yet to check out. You can also get a discount if you are a resident of Tower Hamlets, just FYI! Also, Captain Phillips is very good. If you are reading this now, you should go see it. read more

I'll admit it, I saw a really crap film here. It wasn't crap, it was actually really entertaining. It's just that it had Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig dressed up as hard men cowboys fighting aliens. It was epic. I repeat EPIC. I really like this cinema, they can't organise a piss up in a brewery but as far as indie picture houses go, they are pretty awesome. The tickets are great value for money and they have quite a few small screens so it's nice and intimate when you watch something. They also sell beer. Oh, and they sell wine. All that you can consume while watching your movie. That's not all though, they host performances here, host exhibitions and even have creative office spaces. After more than two years living in London, I finally caught a flick here recently. Two visits later, and I am hooked - it's become one of my new favourite cinemas! It gets my seal of cinema approval: reasonable prices for tickets AND snacks, comfortable seating, high quality screens, clean premises, and it's usually showing the films I want to see. Oh, and you can take your booze to your seat with you. I just wish I had known the full extent of its awesomeness YEARS ago - it would have likely saved many a trip to some of London's dodgiest cinemas. (No, I'm not a total cinema snob, not ALL of London's chain cinemas are terrible...just a few of them.... Vue Leicester Square, I'm looking at YOU!) A cinema with a distinct community feel, Rich Mix is an independent culture centre that is ingrained with the local community and it's great to see it sticking to its true roots. The cinema is very reasonably priced for both tickets and snacks and on a Monday and Tuesday you get cheaper tickets if you're a member of Bethnal Green library. They show an amazing selection of entertainment from blockbuster movies to small budget indie films. They also host any number of events from comedy to acting to art showings. The cinema is very comfortable and your allowed to take alcoholic drinks in with you which makes for a nice change. The events hall downstairs is always having something different on and creates such a buzz as you come in. One little thing to note is that the queues for the tickets can get quite long. I would definitely suggest buying your tickets online before you go. read more

Gets 5 stars straightaway from me. It's a great place to see a film and so much more pleasant than a chain cinema. There's a music / performance space on the ground floor, bar area, cafe, art gallery on the first floor that you walk through on the way to the cinema. Friendly staff too. The first time I visited I went to go into the performance space but it was closed for a private event. The bouncer on the door was the most pleasant and politest bouncer I have encountered and directed me to another bar upstairs where you can bring your drink into the cinema. Ticket prices are also reasonable - so good value too. The whole place is so much more civilised than the usual cinema experience. read more

Close to the northern end of bohemian Brick Lane, it's no wonder Rich Mix is such an inspiring and colourful music venue. I was there in late May 2010 for Lokkhi Terra's album release. With Fela Kuti's keyboard player opening, it was a case of the opening act being as good as the main act- a real treat, and all for just £11. The locale is fully licensed and has a decent sized stage and a fun and eclectic group of people. Bartenders were all super nice, the only problem being that their only draught beer was out, so we had to make do with bottles for the eve. If you like good local music that represents the insane diversity we find here in London, I would definitely recommend Rich Mix. read more

I'm really intrigued about this venue. There seemed to be all of my favourite things packed into a single multi levelled complex. Teasing me with the smell of popcorn in the air, the cinema offers mainstream films but also something a little taster in the form of art house and foreign flicks. The ground floor is home to the bar, cafe and an open space which is often bulging at the seams with exhibit, fashion shows, live music and all kinds of wonderful arty paraphernalia. Love it. The entire ethos of Rich Mix is right up my alley: "To deliver a world-class artistic programme that reflects, and is accessible to, the diverse communities who live in East London". Simply put, anywhere or anyone whose aim or objective it is, is to build community bridges, to bring people together using any means, but in particular art, in indeed a friend of mine. Great little cinema, showing non-mainstream and mainstream film. The film we happened to watch though was a bit pants, but thats not what this review is about so I shall not discuss it further. Saw a few amateur art films in the bar beforehand, and they openly asked the audience to participate and submit their movies, which I thought was cool. My favorite I have to say was the balding trans-sexual grand/father/mother person, it was fascinating and at the same time a horrifying film. The decor of the bar area is arty and you can relax on comfortable sofas whist enjoying a drink or something decent to eat. Thought it was nice and different not to be overwhelmed by sugared products, although they are there if you want them. read more

Bloody brilliant place. Loved it. Walked in to find a delightful free jazz perfomance in mid-flow. The place was full of a young crowd - lots of macbooks spotted here - I'm assuming free wifi?! We came for the cinema - and it was really impressive. Ultra modern, great seats, fantastic wall art... not your average multiplex that's for sure. As my friend put it... 'in Norwich you'd have pregnant mothers fighting in the cinema... here you get jazz bands and hipsters'. This just seems like an interesting place to hang out and relax. I like this place. I come here for the cinema often as its much cheaper, its local and its a nice environment. Drinks and snacks are reasonably priced compared to other cinamas too. Staff can be a little stand offish but i guess this is shoreditch and they feel thats the way to be. Although the girls behind the snack bar last time i went (last week to see Planet of the Apes which was wicked by the way!) were lovely and cheerful! It feels like more of a proper night out here - I think because theres a bar. This is more of a grown up cinema. No kids running around which is nice. read more

Superbly unassuming little place. Only went to the restaurant, not the cinema nor the gallery. The food is inventive and tasty! I had the Menthi Paneer with a Chaat starter. I really like this venue, they give out regular comedy tickets for free from showfilmfirst here. What I like is that the hall immediately on the left as you walk in the entrance, is quite spacious but cozy at the same time. There are some places with restricted views but you can try and dodge those. The bar is pretty cool and staff here are really friendly. The crowd are usually quite young, hip, and likes their alcohol ;D I tried the cafe to the right of the entrance as well, decent food, noone tells you off for sitting at tables when you haven't ordered yet or are plainly waiting for friends. Not tried the cinema yet, will have to come again sometime. What spoils it is that this place is slightly out of the way for me to get to, need to change trains a few times ...! It's not super close to the station but walkable distance! Or a short bus ride. read more

In the ever so trendy Bethenal Green Road stands the new building that host the coolest cinema this side of the river; it has three screen rooms, a café, and a bar. It definitely feels different from the rest of cinemas I've been to. Partly because the people that manage this place has an ethos, of promoting and helping new and emerging artist, and they do so by hosting a great variety of activities aside form playing movies, how cool is that! I have been looking for a good cinema already a while as I hate as hate it is all about chains now a days. I visited Rich Mix for the first time yesterday after reading the reviews from here, and what a pleasant surprise! The selection of the movies is small but impressive, and changes every week. There was no queue and the prices were much cheaper than the rivals in the central has. Also they have a decent discount for students! This is definitely my regular cinema from now on, and location next to Brick Lane is just perfect. read more

A grown up cinema that has a chilled out bar/cafe/event space in place of the neon lights and giant cartoon characters that blind you at the big cinemas. Really in keeping with the individuality of the area and the best local addition in 2006. It has the comfiest screening rooms you're likely to find and always shows a decent mix of films - indy and arthouse alongside more mainstream - so there's usually something to appeal. Really reasonably priced (cinema as well as cafe) and overall it's got such a relaxed atmosphere and is generally a great space. Good place to stop for a drink or snack even if you don't want to catch a film. Really reccommend it. read more

This is a great little spot on the Bethnal Green Road close to Brick Lane. There's a cinema, a cafe and a lively and dynamic programme of theatre and education events. They seem to be involved in all manner of festivals that happen around the area -and manage to represent all the diverse groups that are particular to the locality. I really like the cinema here - it may not be something particularly sought for in a cinema - but the decor inside each of the theatres is so quirky and chic and colourful. They didn't show any adverts also when I went there - but I don't know if that was because I went to see Sex and the City and there were scores of die-hard impatient women. Rich Mix is a community arts centre first and cinema second. Public and corporate funded and a very innovative social enterprise. They have a great roster of events such as comedy nights, jazz evenings, gigs etc. There is also a cool cinema that shows both the blockbusters and 'worldly' movies, a cool cafe/bar area with free WiFi and a great East End feel. Situated near to Brick Lane on Bethnal Green road it is easy to get to and in one of the hippest parts of town. If you live in the area you'd do well to sign up to their newsletter to be kept up-to-date on events planned. read more

After drinking at a local bar in Bethnal green on a Tuesday, my friend suggested we check out Pongathon at the Rich Mix. My confused face complimented my lack of understanding of the jibberish she had just said to me. And what sounded like an Indian cuisine, turned out to be nothing of the like. As soon as you walked into the venue, you could instantly hear (and see) ping pong balls bouncing off tables and walls. Since i've grown up with a ping pong table in my family's lounge room and am proudly a quarter Chinese, this game was right up my alley. You can either rent a table at an hourly rate of £25 or simply turn up to a monthly Pongathon night and verse others free! Not to mention competing against their unbeatable robot machines that spit out ping pong balls faster than you could yell 'Yelp." You might even be good enough to win free drinks at the bar by showing off your hand skills. And possibly some female attention. My friend and I entered the sofa competition where we had to sit on a, surprise surprise, sofa while versing the scary robot machine. Whilst wittingly naming ourselves 'The Azns', we unfortunately came third. But will definitely be back there again soon! read more

It was only a quick visit to the cinema here which was overpriced for the screen size. Am sure if this place had a live performance with a lively band then it would get a higher rating as the venue seemed reasonably good. Rich Mix is a pretty decent cinema in terms of facilities. The bar's reasonably priced, there's a cafe on the ground floor which offers decent food so you're not forced to resort to nachos and hot dogs if you're starving before the show, and there're some comfy sofas on the first floor in case you, like I did, had nothing else to do before the show started and just wanted to chill. Given the location, I was a little taken aback by the ticket prices. I think it's £9 per ticket pretty much every day, although you can get tickets for £5 if you go in the afternoon on certain days or have an Idea Store membership. It's not that centrally located after all, and I guess I expected there to be one cheaper day like what the Barbican offers. read more
