I'm not some nagging bitch who complains and writes reviews because something didn't go her way or because she feels as if she is being treated unfair. ( No offense if i just described you.) I'm just saying that for me to be sitting here writing this review...there were problems. Ill start from the beginning...My best friend found herself in some legal trouble and in need of a top notch criminal attorney. I wont sugar coat it...her record is extensive and her charges complex, eventually spanning out over multiple counties, and states. I went looking for THE BEST. The best criminal defense attorney in multnomah county. That led me to Mr. Stephen Doyle. when i googled best criminal defense attorney in multnomah county Stephen Doyle is at the top of the results. ( I now know that if he pays for ad space w/google his name can be at the top of that list regardless of his skill set or ability.) However at the time i did NOT know this. I read the google reviews on Mr. Doyle and they were OUTSTANDING. They said everything i needed to hear, everything that i was looking for in an attorney for my friend. So i gave Mr. Doyle a call. I spoke with a very helpful receptionist who put Mr. Doyle right through...i explained a summery of the case and he jumped right in..looking up some info i didnt have and overall eager to get started on the case. the next day i took Mr. Doyle $ 7,500 retainer and he took the case. The issues started right away him not knowing information he should know (court dates, pending charges) by now her case had become quite complex as more charges were popping up in multiple counties and also in another state. I had never been in this situation so i wasn't sure how to navigate the legal road blocks we were encountering. his website advertises he is able to work in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washinton County, yet when charges popped up in clackamas county Mr. Doyle refused to represent her on her new charges. That made zero sense to me. If your clinet has PREPAID you almost $8,000 ( & you've only spoke a couple times on phone met with her once which techniqually was free because he advertises a free consult) i would think you'd want to make it at least look like your earning the money. but NOT r. Doyle, he didn't even pretend to do a damn thing once he was paid. I mean can you blame him? if someone pays you in advance to do a job..hell, any job...you're gonna be less inclined to do it if you've already been paid. and it was apparent almost instantly. Honestly it was like as soon as he got paid and was hired, he completely changed...that eager, optimistic always available attorney became a quiet, pesimestic, hard to get ahold of passive aggressive jerk. He was hard to get ahold of & even when you got through he rarley knew what was going on with her case. god forbid you have a question about the other cases. we had nobody to navigate the legal end of all the other charges which was frustrating to say the least. He actually MISSED HER COURT. we sat in the courtroom shocked & angry that this man could keep $8,000 and not do a fucking thing to earn it. At least two times i called Mr. Doyle to pass along information (both times he was unaware and asked how i knew that information) i told him... I called the jail and asked. he only ever seemed concerned with money. Hiring Mr. Doyle was hands down one of the BIGGEST MISTAKES I've made to date. i wish someone would have told me all these things when i was researching best criminal defense attorney because MR. I am currently facing criminal charges and for the simple fact that my previous attorney committed suicide earlier this year I chose to go with this firm. Unknowingly that they are hourly. I literally got into an argument with Mark Cogan on the phone as to why is his quote 10,000 dollars and not 7,500 like all the other firms that I have called. He said this is his business he is the boss and he and he only sets the price. At no time during that conversation did he tell me that this firm is not flat rate as is 90% of all other Attorneys in the area. If I was upset about 2500 dollars then at that point it should have been explained to me that they are not flat rate and that a case like mine would be a lot more than 10,000 anyway. What he said (Mark) was that " if you have a problem with that price then maybe we're not the firm you should go with" never once did he say we are not flat rate. Otherwise why would anyone who is upset about the difference between 7500 and 10,000. Continue to go with this firm knowing it will be a lot more? I am not mentally insane and I work very hard for my income as a small business owner. That 10,000 set my family budget back and now not only did I explain this to Mark he knew that I didn't know it. He sent a request for funds and in the email he said that " some individuals who are in a financial bind can turn to friends and family members, here is a link for them" in the email. Obviously he knew that. He never sat down with me to even meet me before depositing my check into his account. Matter of fact I never met him at all! He claimed to be sick in the office when I came to meet him. Though he still had me sign the paperwork to hire him and accepted me check without explaining how their firm charges. I was set to go to trial in a couple weeks before I signed up with his firm. I can admit that I didn't read the fine print. And I do mean fine. Almost 1000 words on a sheet of paper, in front of a person who is facing charges is a lot to understand. I should have had someone go over the fee agreement with me. Anyone in his office could have easily explained that they are not a flat rate form like most others are and that they could be a lot more than 10 grand so think about that before you make your decision to commit to this firm for representation. DID THAT HAPPEN? NO! He might have a good courtroom reputation, but do not go with this firm. Mark Cogan does not care about people at all. He knew that I would it be able to afford his firm yet failed to properly go over the fee agreement with me. As I was arguing with him over 2500 dollars. Yet still he let me sign that fee agreement without him nor anyone else in the office explaining it to me. He may very well have been sick that day we were supposed to have our initial meeting. I don't know. What I do know is that I had hired a previous Attorney to represent me and she committed suicide. I hired his firm unknowingly of the fees that it would be. And I explained that to Mark. It was a honest mistake. I asked could he please help me. Maybe a sliding scale or limited scope of work. Knowing that I didn't understand his feelings agreement because no one in his office went over it with me.
