Upon check-in we'd learned that the limit is typically 4 people (700 lb maximum), but since most of us are pretty small we were well under that weight limit even as five people, so they allowed it (and I lived to write this review so, all good). After signing my life away and a very quick motor tutorial by a kid who looked like he couldn't be older than middle school, we were on our way. The motor on this boat took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of it I was a pretty good captain (I'd like to think). We put down the anchor and got out to explore Bird and Gull Islands, then headed over to another beach with a hill to climb up and get a bird's eye view of the area. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the harbor, but we kept the party going with some drinks and food (will review that separately). Jay (who I think is the owner or manager?) told us we were only allowed to rent a boat if we took a picture and it turns out he was serious (see the photo shoot results in my photos which turned out pretty cute). He took these on his phone so not sure what else he plans to do with them.

From day one rob (manager) has been over the top helpful even going as far as going out with new boaters to show them the area. The dock hands also are helpful. The bait and tackle shop owner Tom is helpful and extremely knowledgeable and enjoys sharing his time and experiences. The corral house serves delicious tapas. And it's a refreshing change from the same old local food.

Pull into their parking lot, right on Main St. It's a shared lot, so don't worry about parking in…read morethe wrong spots, unless there are signs in the spots specifically saying otherwise. There's a clean bathroom toward the back of the lot, complete with a shower. So, after you get all nasty from kayaking in the sun for a couple hours, you can clean up and change into dry clothes. The staff was super. Very polite and helpful. From the dock, you pull past docked boats, and right out into the river. It's a gentle ride. Very little current. And it's a no wake zone for a decent distance. Perfect for beginners. The 2 routes they recommend are 1. Into the bird sanctuary, or 2. Past a bridge (route 105?), round an island, and come back. They recommended doing only one of the 2 due to time. But we were able to do both and come back with plenty of time left of our 2 hour trip. A great introduction to kayaking.

We arrived 1/2 hour late, and they were able to hold our equipment and it made no difference in our reservation... 4 hours began at the time that we stepped out of their office. They have a restroom for the public in the next building over, which was kept clean and stocked. A gentleman helped us into our kayaks and sent us off. The river is beautiful, though because it's quite wide, you need to share it with yachts and boats of various sizes. This creates some waves, and they can be a pain in the ass. In general, people on the water are cool with each other, but there are some (maybe it's a Long Island thing) who feel so superior in their big beautiful boats and treat you like a pipsqueak in their way. As I was all the way to the right side of the river, while returning to the dock, a boat came up behind me. I turned around, looked at the guy driving, and he made a hand motion to say "move over to the left." I thought I was blocking his way into his dock, but he passed me by and kept going straight! Like WTF? That has nothing to do with L.I. Canoe Kayak Rentals, I'm just commenting on the experience in general. To add to the experience, there are some really nice spots with exposed sand (when it's not high tide) that you can hang out along and explore nature. There's a bird sanctuary as well... which wasn't really that impressive, but that may have just been my timing. When we returned to the dock, we pulled in our kayaks and there was no one present to help us out. A couple of ladies pulled their kayaks in, and one needed help getting out, so we provided that help ourselves. I wasn't so impressed about that aspect of this business, though I realize it's probably a lot to ask for them to have someone standing on the dock all day to receive people who are returning. It wasn't a cheap trip, but I'd likely return. I will probably check out some other places first though.

The property is dotted with bamboo around the walkways that bring you through wooded area over to the other end from the lot. It's a quick jaunt to/from the LIE (though we always take the back roads) and is kinda equidistant in terms of the entire Peconic route, offering some nice portage (including a ramped launch between tunnels that seems to amaze newcomers every time when they spot the bottom of a not-that-severe dropoff into tunnels, which complement the one up the road). Cameron is the best, so helpful and made sure everyone got onto and off of their paddle boards safely. Cheryl is the teacher and owner. You can tell she loves what she does and cares about everyone. She showed us what to do ahead of time and explained just how to get ourselves ready for a fabulous class. She asked if there was anyone who was new to Paddleboarding and/or yoga and helped those who were new to the practice. We all had a very good time. Afterwards, she was helpful for those who wanted to paddle more or do additional poses. Some did headstand- on the board- wow! Just wow. Great time! Highly recommend this fabulous experience to everyone. If you are in the Hamptons (near Dockers) its a must do for you and your friends and family.
