A true treasure, may well be the finest American crafts trading post in the world. Stuffed literally to the rafters with fine Navajo runs, jewelry Kachina, silver smithing baskets, saddles, bolos, . etc... Its mesmerizing. THE price marked is never the real price (for rugs think %65 off the marked price) And the knowledgeable sales people are pushy at times. But they must have $15 million in inventory, maybe more. I had time in the evening for one stop, so I researched trading posts in Gallup, and Richardson's seemed to be the place. I could have circled the store for a couple hours--old pawn, new pieces, countless artists. The person who helped me was kind, knowledgeable, and genuine (maybe the owner?) I recommend stopping here if you are in town--they've been around since 1913 and have the provenance to show for it. read more

This is the most incredible place to find Native American treasures and a MUST stop if you are within a 100 miles of Gallup, NM. Seriously, I would plan an entire trip around it. Richardson's is a major part of Route 66 history and well-known in Gallup and beyond. The selection is incredible and historical and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. I purchased two rugs on a recent visit and the quality for the price is excellent. I must have spent two hours in the place! I had been looking forward to purchasing a few things and heard that the pawnshops are the best place to go. Although the staff was friendly, I felt pressured to buy things that I hadn't really come for. Particularly, lady name Rose, was dominating me when I wanted to be independent of that. Furthermore, I was originally assisted by a woman who is part owner, and she quoted me a lower price on a couple items, than Rose did on the same items several minutes later. It was almost as though they switched places assisting me, so that they could get more money out of me. It made me feel uncomfortable, and even though I bought several things, I felt as though I was ripped off. The prices were very high relative to what they should've been. It ruined what I had hoped would be a special, and enjoyable experience. I wish I had tried a different place, but I had run out of time, because most places close at around six and are not open on Sunday. read more

Stopped here on a recent trip to NM. We went to Gallup specifically to shop for authentic Native American Indian jewelry and were not disappointed at this stop! The store is wall to wall full of history and turquoise! Larry patiently helped us as I searched for a long awaited sterling concho belt. He was so helpful and did not try to sell me the most expensive one I tried on. We narrowed it down to three then talked money. I got a nice heavy belt for a fair price. He worked with me to space the conchos exactly right before leaving. This store has Old pawn jewelry and a great selection of new jewelry. Everyone was so kind. A pleasant experience. A must if you are in the area. Located on Historic Route 66. Many thanks to Larry and staff. I couldn't be more pleased. read more

I've bought at the Indian Shop @ the Department of Interior in Washington, DC, as well as gift shops in the national parks, which stock pawn and 'new' Indian made merchandise. I also review prices and availability on line. I think Richardson's an excellent source for any Indian crafted items. And, a visit there is like stepping back in time. read more

I had heard tons about this Trading Post so when I visited Gallup, Richardson's was a must do. They have an incredible variety of merchandise however go to Richardson's to look and not to buy because they are highly overpriced on everything. The sales staff is extremely helpful and friendly but unless you want to pay triple for an item don't even think about buying anything. I am a collector of Native American turquoise jewelry and have shopped extensively online, in Albuquerque, and in Santa Fe. I also visited other Trading Posts in Gallup. I asked to see a cuff bracelet in the case that wasn't particularly heavy; the stones were average size and nothing rare and the price was $1600.00. When I was in Richardson's they showed me a pair of Navajo Silver beads that were $300.00. When I left there I went around the corner to the Gallup Trading Company on S. 3rd and the same item was a third of the price. Just saying. It is awfully nice to browse in Richardson's but before you buy shop the surrounding stores. Even galleries around the Plaza in Santa Fe were cheaper than this store. read more

Richardson's is the most incredible place to buy Native American jewelry and I have a PhD in shopping. Santa Fe and Albuquerque can not even compare. The reviewer from Nebraska that is "not recommened" was right about the imposters selling Indian jewelry. This place is the real thing. Try to go on a Saturday to see some of the artists who come in to pay on their pawn. Mildred has always been my salesperson so I have never encountered anyone who is "pushy". Everyrhing can be bartered. Jewelry is usualky 50% off the tag price. I always check out the other shops for selections and prices, but the vast majority of my buying is done at Richardson's. read more

Absolutely a spectacular selection of GENUINE Native American treasures. Very honest and knowledgeable staff in every area of Southwestern collectibles as well as useful items for the cowboy. Their vault may contain the largest collection and repository of fabulous hand made Native American silver and turquoise jewelry in the world! I can't say enough good about this place. If you have any interest in Native American art and craft do not miss stopping here. Its one of the only places left that is the real deal still on Route 66 since its beginning. Sadly only feet from this marvelous store are an ever growing variety of sellers of FAKE Native American merchandise. These people come in from places like India and Pakistan. They will look you right in the eye and tell you in their strange foreign dialect that an item is genuine when they know full well they are selling fakes. Apparently in their culture if you buy a fake and believe its real, its OK, no harm done? No one is interested in enforcing the laws that regulate these items so a buyer must be very cautious and only deal with reputable sellers such as Richardson's. Unless you are an expert in discerning the fake from the genuine. You can bank on the advise you will get at Richardson's. I know this sounds like an ad for them because I have written a lot of ads in my life but I write this because I and tired of seeing people get ripped off by the criminals that are flooding into the Gallup area selling imitation junk to unsuspecting tourists.
