I haven't been in here in about three years or so, and that was when I first got my Georgia driver's license (purely because my home state license expired, and I could not renew it online). This DDS is usually VERY crowded, and quite noisy as well. The way they do their system is kind of funky, and a little annoying, but if you can skate through on a weekday during everyone's normal working hours, you shouldn't be in there too long. I went a couple weeks ago on a Friday afternoon to get an endorsement added to my license, and it was fairly painless for the most part. The employees are definitely hit or miss, sometimes you get a super nice one and sometimes you get a... not so nice one. Either way, I make it a point to not go to this DDS, but it was the closest one to where I was at the moment, so I just decided to stop there.

I have had to visit this location on Mike Padgett Highway several times this year. When Nicole wrote her review I would agree with her. However they have added someone who asks while you wait in line "Why you are here?". This addition is incredibly valuable. In the past I have watched people wait in line only to be told they are not even in the right office or being told they need a document they don't have with them after waiting 1-2 hours. Since adding this person service has become highly valuable. Things stay moving even when fully loaded. Customers are much happier knowing their wait has been minimized even before they get to the counter. Also that person can direct customers to online features they can use while waiting in line. They have even added two computers terminals for this process and often people just start helping each other. So even that 80-90 year old grandma or grandpa can be assisted in a way that gets them through with a kind of speed I have never witnessed before. I used an online feature before coming in, that's right from home, got a number, sat down and was called in 5 minutes and helped in about 2 minutes. If they maintain this level of service I will raise the rating from a 4 star to a 5 star.

It is a cruel scenario that every year for my birthday month my car tag expires. I should be…read morecelebrating and opening presents and trying not to feel so old. But instead I am reminded that I need to either go online or in person to renew my tag. Because there was a change of mailing address, I did not receive my renewal notice in the mail so I knew a trip to Peach Orchard road was a coming. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I walked in and an electronic screen asked my purpose for being there. I pressed the appropriate button and my paper ticket popped out. I sat down and listened for the next number. It was 10 in front of mind. I was not hopeful. As I sat there, I soon observed an employee whose job it appears is to answer questions and help people make the right selection when checking in. That is thoughtful. But I still anticipated a long wait. I began catching up on the local news when all of a sudden numbers were being called out over the intercom. Sometimes two at a time. In less than 20 minutes, I was seated across from someone telling her I needed to renew my tag. In less than 5 minutes I had not only renewed my tag, but updated my mailing information and phone number. Talk about efficient. I left impressed. If you live in Richmond County, this is the place to go. Trust me. *Insider's Tip -They will ask for an acceptable ID (driver's license, etc) so be sure to have it on hand.

The marker reads, "This is the site of the old Planter's Hotel, which was burned in 1839. There the Marquis de LaFayette was entertained during his visit to Augusta in March 1825. LaFayette landed at Savannah on March 19th and traveled to Augusta with Governor Troup a few days later. Arriving on the steamboat "Altamaha", LaFayette was greeted by a great procession of musicians, soldiers, clergymen, and citizens, who accompanied him into the city and to the Planter`s Hotel, where apartments had been prepared for him. The next day, Mayor William Holt formally welcomed the Marquis at the City Hall. The festivities planned in honor of LaFayette were even more lavish than those enjoyed by General Washington when he visited the city in 1791. An elaborate banquet and ball climaxed his visit. LaFayette left Augusta on Friday, March 25th, and with Governor Troup journeyed on to Milledgeville. The reverence which the people of Augusta felt for this most beloved American ally is relfected in a toast proposed at the banquet: "A man whose sovereignty is above that of kings - LaFayette who reigns in the hearts of the whole people." The marker was erected in 1962 by the Georgia Historical Commission. It is marker number 121-42. It stands as a small but vivid link to a moment when Augusta was part of a national celebration of gratitude, pride, and Revolutionary heritage, and it adds another thread to the city's long, layered story.
