Beef Hot Dog stand in the parking lot of the Vegetarian Festival. BRILLIANT.

Even though I live a few blocks for Bryan Park, I've never been to the Veggie Fest. So, we saddled up the baby and headed over around 12:15pm- just 15 minutes after it started. And it was packed. PACKED. The festival itself had some good food, but that's about it. I consider myself pretty liberal, but the other vendors there made me feel old and stodgy. Fortune tellers? Midwives? Holistic medicine? Chiropractors? Not for me. I was glad to see so many dog rescues had tents- I love RingDog and some of the other groups... very fun. And the festival was dog and kid friendly, which was nice. There was plenty of room to put down a blanket and spread out... My biggest disappointment was that Nile Restaurant was late in getting set up- we waited until around 1:15pm so we could get some food from them, but they still weren't open... instead we got some garlic fries, some veggie samosas that were awesome and some cheese and spinach from the Indian restaurant that was there. Overall, very tasty. Oh, and that some loser parked poorly in the lot, and ended up boxing in a whole ton of people in the parking lot. Whomever parked that Black Honda Civic (it was a pre-2001) should have their license revoked for being a dumb-a**. My favorite part of the festival though was the tent set up right near the parking lot, selling beef hot dogs. I am not joking. BRILLIANT

Had a great time at this years Vegetarian Festival, there were plenty of vendors and informational tables to visit, a decent amount of places to sit and find shade if needed. They also had water placed around the festival to allow dogs to get a cool drink. There was plenty of yummy vegan and vegetarian foods to select from at a reasonable price and the potions we're very generous. I went home with a nice size to-go box! Can't wait till next year!

This annual festival was enjoyable. It goes on in Richmond every year. It was a hike to the location once you parked, far across a few soccer fields. Get there WAY early if you want decent parking without a mile long hike. The food vendors were varied and the ones I tried, tasty. Did not have room for more! The music was good, the event was pet friendly, which was convenient and everyone friendly. Educational booths were abundant and social awareness of animal cruelty was paramount. Nicely done! Get a shuttle for parking next year!

It's fun to meet some of the animals in attendance, and there are great educational resources on reducing or eliminating meat/transitioning to veganism.

Each day they host about 150 people from around the world. The Doorways relies heavily on donations and volunteers. Their are plenty of volunteer opportunities and my friends and I chose to provide and serve a meal. Their front desk staff was super informative and very welcoming. Their kitchen was huge and provided everything we needed to make dinner for the guest. We chose to do burgers; turkey burgers; green beans; baked beans; assorted chips and fresh salad. We did need to bring all of the food to be cooked and any additional or specialty seasoning we wanted to use. The kitchen had 4 of everything (stove, fridge, microwave, etc.) after preparing the meal you serve dinner to the residents around 6:30pm. Now cooking with my friends was so much fun but the highlight was definitely meeting the residents. All walks of life and just thankful for another day. This was such an rewarding feeling and we met some amazing guest. Mr Bryan, a resident there kept us laughing with his great spirit and personality. If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer in Richmond Va I would highly suggest spending some time at The Doorways! I'm looking forward to returning.

Yes the place could use a makeover regarding the rooms, but it serves the purpose. Providing a safe place to stay, very close to VCU for patients and families that live far and abroad. No one is obligated to pay for the stay. A donation of $15.00 is recommended but no one is turned down for lack of funds. Volunteers come during the week and prepare home cooked meals free of charge! I am grateful for those that work here and the service provided.
