Nia is amazing, and each teacher brings their own energy to the practice. In fact, if you have tried Nia and didn't love it, I recommend trying another teacher or more. It's more about the right fit for you than it is about "good" and "bad" teachers. So, Jenn Hicks. She's amazing. She's not shy about sharing her personal story online and the struggles that lead her to Nia. She has a passion for mental health and celebrating the bodies we have. Jenn understands and loves it when you take care of yourself, so there is no pressure to keep up or do anything that doesn't feel right. If I need to slow a move down, or take a break, I know that Jenn respects and encourages that. I feel like she creates a safe place where I can show up, as I am, and dance from there. All of me is welcome here. You can be gentle. That said, if I wanted to pump things up and really work it, there is no one better than Jenn Hicks. That girl has more energy than anyone I know. She has a blast while she teaches and her enthusiasm is contagious. If you want a great workout that rocks your cardio while being kind to your body, this is the class. If I could describe her classes in two words, sexy and sweaty come to mind. The kind of sexy that is barefoot and strong. I often laugh out loud in her classes as well. And I love the music she chooses. It's all over the place, but always fun. Jenn is super playful but don't be fooled -- that woman is a powerhouse of wisdom. You'll be in good hands, and likely leave loving your body a little more.

Just a few minutes into my first class, I found myself loving it. It's a great addition to my work out routine. The no pressure, feel-good approach works for me, and yet I still get a great workout. Jenn's positive attitude and warm personality just adds to the overall feeling of enjoyment. I will continue with Nia and hope to reap the benefits for a long time to come.

After trying out these gyms, I came to the conclusion that Adelaide Club is the best bang for your buck and also the most conveniently location. I personally like CrossFit style workout and Adelaide's StregthLab program is exactly what I need: a CrossFit style program inside a gym, allowing me to do some Strenth and Conditioning workout, while enjoying the other perks in the club (yoga, cycling, squash, towel services, steam room, etc.) Note that the StregthLab program and squash are not included on the basic membership. Having said that, it's still cheaper than any other CrossFit gyms. Also, another benefits at the Adelaide's StrengthLab program is that the workout are tailored to office athletes; heavy lifts and complex gymnastic movements are not part of the workout (muscle-ups, overhead squat, etc). Another perk of the club is that members get to enjoy reciprocal access to other exclusive clubs across Canada and abroad (private golf clubs, tennis club, other high end gyms in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary)

I've been a member at the West End YMCA for a few months. I wasn't going to say anything about what…read moreI thought were minor issues, but lately it's become a bit more disconcerting. I'm from a small town, and when I go into a business or establishment anywhere, I usually say "hi" to everyone. I also usually say "bye" when I leave. While I know that some people are busy when I enter and exit the gym at the West End YMCA, some people are just snobs and won't say anything to me, ever, or grudgingly do so, even when they're not busy. This has occurred with a woman that works there on more than one occasion. I don't know her name and I don't care to know. I have said "hi" to her repeatedly, on different occasions before, miraculously, she said "hi" to me, once. You'd think I was pulling teeth the way it pained her to do so. I don't understand. If I say "hi" to people that are available and are not busy, what's the problem? I don't "want" her. I'm acting like a GD human being. Geez, it's so easy for me and so tough for her to say "hi". Since it's such a privilege for her to act human once in awhile, I don't really feel like saying "hi" to her anymore. I don't need it and I just ignore her. It's not my job to be polite to people. It's hers. Maybe she should think about that and her overall behaviour. Another time, I asked another woman about whether I could get a TV in another room to play a bicycle path video that they used to play in the spin class room during my time on the stationary bike. Since they never gave me an answer, but always told me that "they have to check with their supervisor", I would keep asking, once, whenever I went to the gym. I finally got an answer one day, that it was not possible. The problem was the women interrupted me, as if I had asked the same question too many times. If I never get an answer to my question then how am I supposed to know what it is? Please don't interrupt me when I talk. I don't like the attitude of most of the staff. Is it because I'm chunky that they think I don't have the right to be treated like a human being? The reason I'm chunky is because I take meds that I need to live, and it's put 50 pounds on me, but I don't have a choice. I have done nothing to anyone there, and yet I pay $66 a month for people to sometimes be polite to me but mostly not. I've kind of had it with the staff there. The fact that this is the only place that I go to where the staff has to decide that day whether they will be snobs or not, says something about that gym and the people that run it. I am very disappointed with the service that I receive there. Now I know why I don't like some snobs in Toronto. I'd rather be in my hometown. Since then, I've talked to someone in charge and I thought the situation would get better. I was saying "hello" to the staff when I went there and some, including the snob woman, said "hello" to me once or twice. The problem is that they always seem to be too busy to have time to say "hello" to me. If I see someone talking to someone else, or on the computer, then I'm not going to bother them or get them to say "hi" to me. I don't need it. But they should really stop what they're doing and say "hello". Again, it's their GD job. Today, I said "hello" to the people at the entrance, and they grudgingly said "hello" to me. The same woman looks at me like I raped her or something. Like, saying "hello" and rape are 2 different things. Princess should learn the difference. Then, at Starbucks across the street, the other woman that interrupted me before and miraculously said "hello" today was there with her boyfriend and kissed him about 2 feet in front of me. Yeah, I'm alone. You don't have to shove your GD relationship in my face. I'm going to cancel my membership there in early September. I want to be around people that can act like human beings and not some kind of trash. Some people there are nice, but too many aren't, and I don't have money to waste on their BS gym. If I could give this gym 0 stars, I would. They suck royally. It's time for some of the soulless staff there to get off their asses and say GD "hello" to me. I'm friendly with people everywhere else I go. At the West End YMCA, they're the ones with the problem, not me. Geez, learn to act civilized already. I've been in better shape for more years in my life than anyone there. Last December, I was doing 8.5 hours of exercise a week and I was 179 pounds. I don't have a GD thing to prove to anyone.

I wanted to attend an aerial class the same day of the activation and based on the hours indicated on the site, I had called the gym right at the opening time. I had called 3 times within 30 minutes and nobody picked up. I went to the gym before the yoga class started and explained my situation....turned out the website was not updated. I've been to other aerial classes at another studio, and the classes offered at Cardio go are extremely fast paced. These classes are definitely not for beginners. They are trying to cram way too many people into one space and it is definitely not safe. With that being said, this was my first class at this location, and the girl beside me fell on her head while we were flipping upside down. However, the pilate classes offered at 200 Front St is amazing. Melissa is an amazing, funny, and ensures that all her students are doing each move correctly. I would definitely recommend going to this class.

I am a huge fan of spin - I've gone to spin class pretty much across the GTA and I was really intrigued by a Groupon here because it was close to my house. The instructors are great - super energetic and Chuck's story is incredibly motivating. I thought this was it! This is going to be my spin place from now on (because SpinCo was too far and SoulCycle at the time hadn't been opened on King W yet). I purchased the 10 classes for myself, and after a great first class, I purchased the same package for my boyfriend. And that's when it all started going downhill... Breanan, who is the manager there was super friendly the first class. He did the whole "sign up with us for 3 months free" speal, but I was at the time still sitting on a 35 class package somewhere else so I told him I'd have to wait. That's when he started making things incredibly difficult for me - I couldn't book classes until 3 days until the time of the actual class because I was subclassed as a "Groupon" member. I pretty much had to just call in the day before to see if they can squeeze me into whatever class they had available, even though most of the time there were at least 2 bikes free. When I mentioned that my boyfriend was only able to attend 2 out of the 10 classes because of their inconsiderate booking methods, Breanan told me "well you can just not come." Classy. So I took his advice. I wrote off the Groupons as an unfortunate loss and I haven't been back. Which is a damn shame because Chuck is a pretty awesome spin instructor. Chuck, if you see this and you're teaching anywhere else let me know!

The space is clean, sleek and bright. There's a shower there, as well as some lockers to store your things. (And, if I understand correctly, there's a small childminding service available while you work out.) The owners - a husband-and-wife team - are great, too. They're super-friendly, and helpful if you've got questions. There are 7 types of barre/ballet classes (plus a ballet-fusion class for kids), and sessions are offered much most times of the day, every day of the week. The weekends *are* - understandably - busier than weekday mornings. (And I heard that classes were full throughout Easter weekend.) But as someone with an alternative schedule (I work weekends and am off weekdays), I like the fact it's *not* crowded early weekday mornings. The instructors (I've had classes with Marvin, Dave and Rochelle) - are great. They're super-helpful - talking you through/demonstrating exercises, and helping you to correct your body to feel the full effect of the exercises. (If you're an early riser, or attend a class that's sparsely attended, you might get more attentive instruction.) They're even there to answer questions about stretching, etc. For anyone unsure of which barre studio to choose (there are now two, with Barreworks opening its uptown location), I would invite anyone to try out a class or two at Barre Beautiful before deciding. I think it's worth it.

I can't comment on the membership prices since the class was a free event held at Equinox, however, I still had access to the entire gym after the yoga class. This particular location on Bay St. is inside Commerce Court West where you have to take an elevator up to the 3rd floor to access the gym. Upon entering you immediately face the reception area. The lighting of the gym at first when you enter is dark and moody. The areas with the machines are well lit and the yoga room overlooks the corner of Bay/King. The change rooms are big where there are plenty of lockers available. You are able to find the steam room, showers, and washrooms inside the changeroom.
