I went to a discussion with the Tibetan Monks last night at the Rime Buddhist Center. First of all street parking. I can't stand street parking but I arrived early enough to avoid parallel parking of any kind.There is a residential street to the side and again, get there early enough. From the time I bought an ancient Buddhist text from a bookstore when I was 24, to now, I've read several of the Buddhist studies and meditate daily. I had an idea what I was walking into..as I've visited the other Buddhist temple near the Plaza, It didn't resonate with me. I've attended conferences or other events. Enter the monk event. I had to go, I couldn't miss it. I thought Rime was in Westport, it's not. It's right off of I-70 and I-35.That's a plus/plus cause of the ease of getting there from my house. There were several things going on, and lucky for me, I got there early to be introduced to the monk who was teaching the class. I found a comfortable group of people who were kind, welcoming and wonderfully grounded. They were alot like me. (yes, sometimes I'm grounded as well). The room I was in is beautiful. There are pillows for floor postures but also chairs. The alter is stunning. There's rooms upstairs which I didn't visit. They have classes throughout the week, a retreat coming up and a weekly Sunday service. On Tuesday night, they have a half hour service. They have meditation classes also. With all their events and classes, I'm excited to discover a place such as Rime. read more

I have belonged to The Rime Center for about 7 years and I joined when I was feeling quite trapped on the circumstances surrounding my life at that point in my life. I knew the stuff that was preventing me from enjoying my life but I didn't see a way to get out. I actively started looking fir help and I needed to get out of myself to see if perhaps I could see my situation from a different perspective and I found the answers at The Rime Center. I didn't miraculously resolved the internal turmoil I felt but I immediately felt that the center and its members immediately made me feel welcomed and that I belonged and that was enough for me to feel that I wasn't alone. I highly recommend everyone to stop by for our Sunday service followed by the free meditation instruction offered every Wednesday evening. read more

Woohoo! A Tibetan Buddhist center! I've been to the Sunday service twice now. Am I enlightened yet? {~; A description straight from the horse's mouth, or maybe Yak: "We offer a service/practice every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The Sunday service/practice consists of various chants along with short periods of meditation, music consisting of singing the Tara and Chenrezig mantras, a guided meditation, and concludes with a short Dharma talk. Guests and visitors are always welcome and the service/practice is published in a program and is very easy to follow along. The published program even includes an annotated guide along the right hand margins of each page. Day care is provided by a certified Montessori school teacher for children ages 2 and up (must be potty trained)." They also offer free meditation instructions on Wednesday at 6pm. And they have a gift shop called the Gem Tree, that provides various Buddhist study and practice materials, "including books, music, statues and other shrine and ritual items, prayer flags, wall hangings, bells, malas, incense, jewelry, meditation cushions, clothing, and more. The Gift Shop also has a lending library featuring a wide variety of Buddhist and Buddhist-related texts." read more

I attend Rime for Sunday service quite a bit and I have participated in some classes there. I like Rime. If you are looking for an accepting and great fellowship to join Rime is a great option. It is Buddhist and I find the meditations the most helpful. I have also made some great friends there. A very non-judgmental place full of people with great hearts. Llama Chuck recently retired and Lama Matt has stepped into his role. The vibe is a little different, but in a great way. They have a bookstore with a great selection of books, shirts, necklaces, brackets, and other items. It is hard not to stop in and spend money every time I am at the center. read more

The only reason I'm not giving Rime only one star is because several of the members were very welcoming and nice. I was really excited to go here for Sunday service and I was planning on signing up for their "Basics of Buddhism" class. However, when I got their and met Lama Chuck Stanford I felt I would have been served better staying home. He was incredibly disingenuous and I felt more like I was in his way than welcomed. Then after the service my friend and I were rudely ushered out by him while my friend was talking to his wife. Bottom line-I will never be returning. read more

This is a really friendly and inclusive Buddhist center in the Tibetan tradition. I enjoy the fact that it's in a beautiful old church and it also has various classes and retreats, and a book shop as well. read more

Center is in a beautiful old church building with stained glass windows. The people are the nicest ever. Gift shop is well stocked and interesting. Lending library is available for members. Lots of info about the local center, classes offered,and all sorts of related activities. The center has a lot going on, about 4 days and evenings per week. The classes and class materials are very affordable. Center has no paid staff - all staff are volunteers. A very calm, peaceful place - as you would expect. Worth a visit. read more
