    Unity Temple on the Plaza

I discovered Unity Temple on the Plaza over 10 years ago. I instantly felt welcome. In the last decade I have attended numerous classes, events and Sunday services. The ministers, Duke & Sandra are wonderful. The choir and soloists are the best! This is a place where ALL are welcome. Check it out...you won't be disappointed.

I don't attend church here, but I've gone to several of Unity's functions. Plus, you can say I frequently eat their restaurant in the basement. The functions they provide, from my Akashic Record Practitioner training, to Rainbow Book's author signing, to yoga classes, very impressive. They have Reiki classes going on in one room, and a Bible study going on in the next room. I think that's kind of cool. I guess I'm trying to say the nondenominational churches are amazing. They allow all religions: Buddah, Christian, others. Plus, I believe they have services with musical guests. To step inside, beyond Eden Alley, and sneak a peek at the beautiful stained glass windows is captivating. If there's no event going on, go in and take a break, and you'll see what I mean. it's really a nice place. Hopefully they can get the bookstore figured out, and back up and running.

It's been awhile since I've been here but this place is used for Rainy days books, for there book signing, many people have been here to sign like Sally Field, Jane Fonda, president Jimmy Carter,Hillary Clint and famous director and sports stars that have written books like Rhonda Rouse and Chef Bobby and others too, if you collect books and like to read than this is for , plus something that you can do with a family members too, when you pay for the book you get two tickets for the event

I don't think I have been here for a service, but for many other options, I have enjoyed my visits to Unity. Unity hosts a lot of book signings, I have been for Hillary and Anne Rice. They know how to keep the lines moving and the area is nice for speakers. My favorite event is the annual (nex year they will be through twice!) sand mandala creation. It is really an amazing process to watch and begs multiple trips during the week the monks are in town to watch the progress. Unity offers both a Christian service and a Buddhist service. They have many different classes and programs to participate in. And not affiliated, but attached, a must stop restaurant Eden Alley. Great, very welcoming environment.

Ask the Community - Unity Temple On the Plaza

Is there sccess for the handicapped and parking close by?

Yes. There is a wheelchair ramp for one of the entrances. There a couple of handicap spots directly in front and the parking lot on the west side of the temple has plenty.

Confusing signage, locked doors everywhere. Would have loved to check it out but no way open or in (despite signs telling me to use the locked doors) and no one around to help. I don't attend one, but I love cathedrals. I can describe it as breathtaking. You park in the gated lot, and go around to the side, which I think is the main entrance. Then I went into the sanctuary. Oh my. I've been to several cathedrals in my traveling, even the large St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, NM. They strike my curiosity. The castle like interior, and the stone exterior with towers and black wrought iron brings one back to a different time period. That's cause this cathedral has been in KC since 1870...I'm not a cathedral geek, I read it in the brochure. The inside of the sanctuary has pews that are wooden and sound creeky. They are old and smell of cedar. The stage, well, I guess it's the pulpit area, is lavish with wrought iron decorating the top of center of the stage. It looks like an open wrought iron gate. Really, it's difficult to describe. It's a not miss, even if you don't attend church, just go inside and look at the sanctuary. I don't know the hours, but it's a definite destination for anyone traveling to Kansas City. It's huge. And the sound system was right on. The stained glass is out standing. They have an art show going on, called Tranformations. The organ music is grand, just grand. So I suggest taking a trip to visit this cathedral just once. It's gorgeous, and breath taking.

Currently, they are meeting in person and masks are optional if you have been vaccinated. Holly McKissick is the lead pastor and I loved her sermons that were to the point, challenging, relatable and inspiring. Once the church began meeting on Sundays we tried them out and have been attending a few weeks now. The worship service is contemporary and laid back. In person attendance looks to be about 60-75 and maybe a similar number who attend via Zoom. I like that the church is devoted to social justice and working to help the most vulnerable in the community and I have an opportunity to be a part of that. The church is very friendly and inclusive as a church family should be. I would define the church as progressive, if you consider the fact that Jesus' teaching and actions were progressive. I was made to feel at home even on my first visit. The church is open to all regardless of race, gender, social status, sexual orientation, gender identity, faith background, age, etc. I think this is our new church home and I highly recommend others try it out.

What we discovered was VERY intense pressure to take their EXCESSIVELY expensive "classes." One fellow named Eric tried to get me to stop going to my doctor. We finally were able to leave, after a neighbor came to get us. Yes, these people tried everything to stop our leaving. It was close to kidnapping. I got home and started researching them, and discovered that adherents go into debt to Scientology to pay for those classes. Some cost $20k, no kidding! All those classes are in the quest of their sect, to get a person's mind to a "clear" state, clear of little beings named "thetans." Ridiculous, isn't it? Well I also discovered that celebrities are treated very well, pampered actually, so as to lure regular folks to join. Regular folks are outright abused, and forced to work off the prices of their worthless "classes" for YEARS in various Scientology locations. And if anyone ever tries to leave, Scientology's warped lawyers will come after them tooth and nail, trashing that person's reputation, as they did with Leah Remini. That's IF they are able to escape! Look up what Scientology did to Lisa McPherson. Scientology is NOT any type of Christian sect, so the "cross" atop their buildings is just for show. There's statues and busts of their founder, a science fiction writer all over the place. And I've repeatedly, over 16 years, ordered them to have no more contact with me. And they have not respected my orders, and repeatedly contacted me--even after I moved more than 200 miles away and changed my phone number. AVOID THIS PLACE AND THE ORGANIZATION LIKE THE PLAGUE. Because in many ways, that's what they are.
