I was pleasantly surprised overall, particularly given how low my expectations were going in. I saw the final Downton Abbey movie in this smaller, older-generation theater, along with other local fans, and I definitely appreciated the old fashioned "hello" when I arrived, from the staff, and the "thank you" when I left. The seats were comfortable, upgraded probably in recent times, the theater was bigger than I expected, the bathrooms clean and notably the employees had a good attitude and a sense of humor (e.g. their early Halloween decor.). She's the one who was being inappropriate and she nearly ruined my little siblings birthday present. That present being going to see the new Spider-Man movie. She needs to be fired. I really did like the food staff though. They were very friendly and the movie was a great time. So 2 stars. Minus the three because I'm still disgusted by such a display of behavior in public. Big girl to big girl where's the damn solidarity? Where's the support? Why am I not allowed to be confident in my body just because she isn't? I was wearing high waisted underwear that were in boyshorts style so it's almost impossible for them to show anything anyway. They were up around my belly button. My pants sat below it where my hips naturally sit. If I had been wearing lower waisted underwear all you would have seen was my stomach. Since when are crop tops not allowed in theaters? And it's not like I was sagging or anything either. My pants were where pants naturally sit on a lot of people. I wasn't exposing myself or anything. In fact it was tucking underwear so there was especially nothing to see. If she isn't fired or doesn't apologize next time we go we won't return. And even then I sucked it up and bullied my pants up until I was inside where I immediately pulled them back down to my waist. If my shirt weren't cropped she wouldn't have seen my underwear. If my underwear weren't high waisted she would've seen my belly button. All I did was add another layer in between her and my belly button. Why was that even necessary? You couldn't see it anyway? Should I attend my local theater in my redneck town in a burka? I'm sure that will go over well too... She either needs to get here shit together immediately and understand that people my age dress far more provocative than I was and I don't think I was really provocative at all. If I were skinny would she have let me in like that? If my stomach didn't bulge like hers would she have treated me how she probably treats her own reflection? The photo attached is very close to what I was wearing accept I was wearing sweat pants and my crop top ran a little higher so you could see a sliver of skin above my stomach but below my breasts. He sorted me out pretty quickly and then I faced my next wonderful obstacle: an amazing concession stand with a very understanding vendor who had two different kinds of kombucha on tap, chilled brut rosé, several beers ranging from a Pilsner to a stout, several kinds of wine including Pinot noir and Cabernet Savignon, popcorn with real butter, frozen junior mints, whoppers, peanut M&Ms... everything good was there. Give yourself a few extra minutes to decide what you want to nosh on -- just don't pass up such a great selection. The movie was showing in theater B which was across the courtyard, really lovely few steps between buildings. The chairs were very comfortable inside theater to B and the drink holders wide enough to hold the mason jar that my kombucha came in. Yep a real glass -- none of the paper or plastic stuff -- love that. But maybe the best part was the audience who was clearly queuing to many of the lines and laughed at all the right places. The vibe was a lot like a familiarity that you encounter when you watch the Rocky horror picture show: lots of audience knowledge and appreciation expressed throughout the film, which made the movie even better. I really like this venue and the set up they have. There's also free parking to the side of the building. Support this business. It's a treasure.

This is a great, independent cinema. They show a mix of some blockbusters, many independent movies,…read morean occasional screening of a movie from yesteryear, sometimes a surprise movie and some movies that are very locally based. Sometimes they even have the director or someone else directly involved in the movie making an appearance for an audience q&a after the show (for example, they have a movie which was directed by a young, Portland director wherein he will be appearing for a q&a next week. Another time they had a young man who did a documentary about his travel down the Columbia River in a canoe he had built). They offer this variety while doing an exceptional job of curating the films and keeping the mix of films showing at any given time diverse. They also vary the show times nicely with the actual number of showings of a particular flick also varying by the day, with show times also fluctuating to different times on different days. The theater itself has comfortable seating that is well tiered so that heads do not get in the way of one's viewing. Also, the seating is positioned so most seats look directly at the screen as opposed to having to tilt one's head a bit to watch the film. I find the size of each theater to be intimate but not small, probably seating in the 130-150 person range. The sound systems are excellent. The theater floors are kept clean, as are the restrooms. The website is well constructed, easy to navigate and filled with information. I am not a big movie goer, especially since Hollywood has placed the wow factor and other film features far above the screenplay value. In my youth I was a regular filmgoer, enjoying the big Hollywood productions, but also the indie flicks playing at the indie theaters. I now find myself being pulled back before the Bigscreen as a result of finding this theater. When visiting Corvallis, which I do frequently, if I have not decided on what to do while their then the Cinema's website is often a go-to for consideration of finding something fun to do. I am impressed with this independent theater and encourage all to visit the website regularly to find new and interesting movies to sink yourself into for a few hours.

Movies need to show in theaters to qualify for an Academy Awards nomination. If they were made for streaming, and they need theatrical, Salem Cinema may get them. That was the case for Kathryn Bigelow's House of Dynamite. It's a Netflix property so most people will see it on a small screen. It deserves a big screen like the Salem Cinema. The Salem Cinema is in a modern building with some vintage interior panels. It is very clean. The rest rooms are clean. The theaters have great seats and good sound. I did not hear any sound bleed between theaters. They do a good job with their vintage graphic design. Where the Salem Cinema could improve, thus the loss of a star, is to expand their food and drink options. They have a large seating area in the lobby. It was empty. There is a dedicated parking lot. Keep an eye on their schedule. You may find something new or old that is not playing elsewhere.

Saw a matinee for $7 a ticket, compared to $15 matinee prices in Salem. The Palace in Silverton is a first class theater all the way.
