I'm not sure why past Yelpers didn't like this theater, and thankfully I didn't experience any mysterious smells. I was pleasantly surprised overall, particularly given how low my expectations were going in. I saw the final Downton Abbey movie in this smaller, older-generation theater, along with other local fans, and I definitely appreciated the old fashioned "hello" when I arrived, from the staff, and the "thank you" when I left. The seats were comfortable, upgraded probably in recent times, the theater was bigger than I expected, the bathrooms clean and notably the employees had a good attitude and a sense of humor (e.g. their early Halloween decor.). Nice job guys!

He sorted me out pretty quickly and then I faced my next wonderful obstacle: an amazing concession stand with a very understanding vendor who had two different kinds of kombucha on tap, chilled brut rosé, several beers ranging from a Pilsner to a stout, several kinds of wine including Pinot noir and Cabernet Savignon, popcorn with real butter, frozen junior mints, whoppers, peanut M&Ms... everything good was there. Give yourself a few extra minutes to decide what you want to nosh on -- just don't pass up such a great selection. The movie was showing in theater B which was across the courtyard, really lovely few steps between buildings. The chairs were very comfortable inside theater to B and the drink holders wide enough to hold the mason jar that my kombucha came in. Yep a real glass -- none of the paper or plastic stuff -- love that. But maybe the best part was the audience who was clearly queuing to many of the lines and laughed at all the right places. The vibe was a lot like a familiarity that you encounter when you watch the Rocky horror picture show: lots of audience knowledge and appreciation expressed throughout the film, which made the movie even better. Movies need to show in theaters to qualify for an Academy Awards nomination. If they were made for streaming, and they need theatrical, Salem Cinema may get them. That was the case for Kathryn Bigelow's House of Dynamite. It's a Netflix property so most people will see it on a small screen. It deserves a big screen like the Salem Cinema. The Salem Cinema is in a modern building with some vintage interior panels. It is very clean. The rest rooms are clean. The theaters have great seats and good sound. I did not hear any sound bleed between theaters. They do a good job with their vintage graphic design. Where the Salem Cinema could improve, thus the loss of a star, is to expand their food and drink options. They have a large seating area in the lobby. It was empty. There is a dedicated parking lot. Keep an eye on their schedule. You may find something new or old that is not playing elsewhere.

As many times as I've seen this film since it first came out in 1969, seeing it again on the big screen was fabulous! The line is so long even if you are early or on time you end up missing first parts in the movie and spend the rest of the movie trying to catch up on what happened . And even that I could look past if they didn't make you pick your seats when you pay and then when you get in there people just sit wherever they want and refuse to move when you show them you already paid for those seats the night before online they don't make sure anyone is sitting in the seats they actually paid for . Sadly after my 7 year old had to sit by himself because we couldn't sit in the seats we paid for the night before and i had to sit across from him with strangers hoping I would hear if he choked on his food we will never go back again . I really hope they can fix this issue of making sure people sit in their seats in the future because kids having to sit with strangers and eating in spots where their parents aren't there to make sure they don't choke isn't safe .

It's in the Italianate/Renaissance/Art Deco style... one could easily imagine it on Miami's South Beach rather than the Pacific Northwest. Its exterior with its eerie stone faces make it look haunted. It's become the art house venue, since it has only one screen. In the often inclement Pacific Northwest, movie theaters are common, especially in Corvallis. Saw a matinee for $7 a ticket, compared to $15 matinee prices in Salem. The Palace in Silverton is a first class theater all the way.
