You can watch glass being blown and pottery being made through the artists windows. Highly recommend this place if you like local and unique art. Ps, you purchase your things at customer service. It was a bit confusing, a stranger stopped to ask us where to pay so we weren't the only confused ones.

His stories, humor, knowledge, and personal experiences as a coal miner made the history come alive in a way that you just can't get from reading a sign or walking through a museum. He made us laugh, taught us so much, and gave us a whole new appreciation for the men and families who lived and worked in the coal camps. Riding the mine car underground and going through the old mine was such a unique experience. You also get to walk through the historic coal camp buildings, including the company house, superintendent's house, church, school, and miner's shanty. But honestly, what made this place so special was the people. Everyone we talked to in the buildings was incredibly kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They were happy to talk with us, answer questions, and share the history behind what we were seeing. We've done a LOT on this trip, and this was easily the experience we'll be talking about the most. It was educational, fascinating, funny, and at times really moving.

I enjoyed going underground, and our tour guide, Gerald, was great. He was able to answer all the questions he was asked. I also went to some of the outbuildings. I was surprised and pleased to see that there were docents in the Supervisor's house & the school. Both of those women came from coal mining families, and I was lucky to be able to spend some time talking to each of them about their experiences. What a hard -- and kind of sad -- life. I actually felt a little guilty that mine is so much different. I also went into the gift shop, where all of the women were just hilariously funny! They almost made me wish that I lived in the area & wanted a job; I would love to work with them! I encourage everyone to visit the Beckley Coal Mine. It was very informative and eye-opening.

Built in an Art Deco style from Indiana limestone, it is a three-story structure that includes a full basement. It is the third courthouse to serve the residents of Raleigh County, the first built in 1852 and the second in 1893. Raleigh County was established in 1850 from part of Fayette County which was then Virginia. It is named in honor of explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. On the grounds of the courthouse, I found monuments honoring Alfred Beckley, Civil War history, and the victims of the Eccles mine disasters. Beckley, the namesake of this town, was the only surviving child of John James Beckley, the first Librarian of Congress and Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives. He served as state delegate, county prosecutor and WV Attorney General before becoming a judge of the 10th Circuit in 1942. As governor (1945-49) he oversaw passage of a road bond, increased teacher pay, and called for new state office space. Died September 12, 1961, in VA: buried in Beckley." Other information is available online. Meadows won the 1944 election for governor with ease thanks to a then-modern campaign that included numerous radio interviews. His top concerns as governor were reducing labor unrest in the coal industry, expanding access to high-quality education, and enhancing transportation in the remote state of West Virginia. The elevators were out, two hallway tiles busted and needed replaced in the hallway, and the parking was not good at all. This location allows pickups with trailers to park there. In the three nights we were there a combined 30 plus spots were used/taken due to the trucks/trailors parking across parking lines. The parking lot is not that big, so when a few guests get to use more spaces because their vehicle needs more than 5 spots that is not fair to the rest of us

Once we got to our assigned room it quickly became apparent that there's very little priority placed on property maintenance at this dog of a place. 1) Speaking of dogs, within 2 minutes of entering the room, a dog came barking down the hallway past us. 2) The bathroom door handle was loose and seemed close to coming off. 3) The bathtub spout was tilted about 30 degrees sideways instead of pointing downward. 4) The tub's drain had a large ring of rust around it. 5) The tub stopper would not open. I had to physically unscrew it from the tub and store it atop the toilet tank before I could get the tub to drain. 6)The shower curtain rod was bent and close to coming off. It drooped so badly that the curtain dragged the bottom of the tub, creating a fall hazard for anyone taking a shower. 7) Water dripped from the tub spigot all night. I placed a washcloth beneath the leak so we could get some sleep. 8) The air conditioner was exceptionally loud when running above our heads at night. 9) Only 1 tissue remained in the box and it was pulled up to the top of the opening to make it look like there was more inside. 10) I tried to make coffee in the Keurig but a round part dropped out of it and fell onto the floor. 11)  Diesel trucks were permitted to park right outside the hotel. At 5:30am one of them was started up and was left to idle for the next 20 minutes outside our 2nd floor window. 12) The bed nearest that window was broken. Possibly jumping children destroyed the box spring or the bed frame itself was broken. Every movement at night was answered with a sag and a clunk. 13) The cover plate of a 120volt electric child-level wall socket was missing. Any little finger that might be poking around under the desk is at great risk. 14) The carpeting was FILTHY. I'm unsure if it was originally supposed to be a brown color, but it certainly is now. My socks and the bottoms of my feet bore this out. 15) Oh, and the toilet seat was broken too. The joint is not at all up to IHG standards.

Biggest concern i have would be the heater/ac unit in the room, looks and smells like it hasn't been cleaned since maybe 2005.(no surprise ) Regardless overall I wouldn't come expecting top notch service and quality. It's comfortable and good for a short stay or a long stay. Overall the hotel experience is great for what it is.

Well we arrive at the hotel to check in at around 7pm and immediately apon arrival our experience starts off terrible. As we are walking through the front doors 2 gentlemen are walk out with their luggage and proceeded too tell us that they found bed bugs in their room and was definitely not staying at this hotel. Even so we proceed to the front desk and the attendant working the desk was an older gentleman with gray hair and glasses we tell him the name the room is reserved under and he asks us for drivers license and credit card as soon as he looks at our drivers license he says "" Nope we do not rent to locals period so I'm gonna go a head and cancel this reservation and since you made the reservation through a 3rd party site you need to call their 1 800 number about getting your money refunded. When I tried to explain to him why we were locals needing a hotel room he immediately shows no interest in hearing anything I could possibly have to say when he rudly interrupts me as soon as I had begun to speak to him. This time saying "" No Exceptions!! Period!!! No locals stay here!!! So I'm gonna need you to leave the property "" . Our experience at this hotel was absolutely horrible one of the worst experiences at any hotel I have ever had!!! Staff was completely rude and unwilling to listen to any reason whatsoever as to why a local might need to rent a room for a few days!!! It's not like my husband and I look like the type of people that could be renting a room here because we have bad or negative intentions!!! The front desk attendant could have at the very least could have pretended to care enough to hear us out and explain why we locals were trying to stay at this establishment!! TERRIBLE, UNFRIENDLY, RUDE, STAFF at front desk!!!
