My kids love working with Nick. He's great at keeping them engaged but also doesn't shy away from holding strong boundaries. Their skillset has continued to grow as has their confidence. Jiu jitsu is a tough sport... it teaches kids to get comfortable with discomfort. Nick does an excellent job at every level, allowing kids to experience difficulties while making sure that they're safe. First off, Nick is far too aggressive to teach children. With older teens or adults--yes--but not with young kids. This is a contact sport and naturally involves some aggression (he made that clear in his opening speech after noticing two new kids in class), but teaching skills, respect, and discipline are fundamental to martial arts. That was completely missing here. During our trial period (which we will not be completing), Nick was teaching alone while managing large groups of children. There was no support staff, no assistants, and little to no ability for small-group or one-on-one guidance. My kids learned the "rules" by being yelled at. Our very first class happened to be promotion night, with the last 30 minutes devoted to belt testing--something we were never informed of, my son sat down during this time and Nick yelled at him that he would have "a girl kick his ass" if he sat down again during class. When my kids received instruction, it was followed by Nick yelling at them for not getting it the first time, even telling them he didn't have time to keep showing them. When we arrived for our trial, no one greeted us, introduced the studio, or explained expectations. At other studios, it's common to have helpers who work with kids individually, showing them how to properly execute and refine their moves. Here, there was none of that. (Recommend RiceBros to check out Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas as a model for an excellent children's program). Another major issue is that Nick allows his son to train in the children's class. His son is extremely aggressive--especially against kids with only a couple of lessons. When we raised concerns, Nick immediately defended his son. Yet, multiple students and parents came up to us afterward to apologize, saying they also felt Nick was wrong. They agreed his son is too aggressive and lacks respect for both the sport and his opponents. Parent/child dynamics in coaching are always tricky, but in this case, it was handled very poorly. In my opinion, this studio needs to hire more help and establish structure before continuing to train them children. On a side note, my fiancé tried the adult class and had a good experience (and why I provided 2 stars), which suggests Nick may be better suited for working with adults. But for kids, his temperament, lack of support, and disorganized setup make this a very poor environment.

There is very little instruction on basics and fundamentals, and the head instructor makes fun of white belts on his group chat. Also, the vibe there is somewhat "culty". I received an injury at my last class and after telling the instructor that I needed at least a month to heal, I was dropped from his "list" like a hot potato before my healing time had even ended. He also regularly drops the f bomb with children there. Just something to think about if you think about enrolling your child.

(Overweight people trying to find a nice way to get in shape, skinny guys trying to build strength and endurance, etc.) If you want your skills and talents to be exploited for the growth of some narcissistic cult leader's gym then this is the place for you.

I've found that MMA gyms tend to be more in line with the training we get in Kyokushin than most traditional martial arts schools of other styles here in the USA, because they train hard and fight full contact. While I didn't get a chance to spar these guys, the padwork was excellent, and then there was a bunch of MMA-related balance ball stuff that kicked my butt! I went for the Muay Thai and MMA class, and I was glad I showed up. Everyone was super nice. I was the only woman there, but I didn't feel unwelcome, nor did I feel coddled. I have a lot of physical disabilities (being female isn't one of them) and the coach accepted when I said I wasn't able to do an activity safely, but he also gave me something else to do, which I appreciated. All of the students were polite, friendly, down to earth, and fun to train with. Super nice guys. They don't put on airs and there isn't a bunch of bowing and standing in certain position type protocol, but don't get the idea that they are thugs because of that. MMA people are just as chill as TMA people. Actually, they're kind of MORE chill than a lot of TMA people. The gym is huge and very well outfitted. There are a couple mat rooms, there's a room with heavy bags, there's a boxing ring, and there's a cage. Lots of striking pads, focus mitts, gloves, shin guards, etc etc. The place seems clean. There are a lot of different classes, and they are very welcoming to new people. Check them out. I'm glad I did, and I wish I had more than one day here so I could go back!

Most importantly, the focus here is on improving health and making members of all ages and abilities feel comfortable and helping them reach their goals. There is no obnoxious dance music or 300 pound bro's hanging out making people uncomfortable. People are free to work with trainers or on their own. I enjoyed working out next to people of all ages. The space is designed with functional training in mind: there are foam rollers, resistance bands, step stools, balance poles, pilates equipment, open mats, all next to the brand new treadmills, weights, and all the usual gym fare. The space is physical therapy-friendly and owners clearly take an ability-oriented approach. Finally, when I misread the hours and had to pay a one-time fee to work out elsewhere on a Sunday, the owner refunded me my 5$ that I paid to another business. I am truly very impressed.

First, they had me get a note, which was understandable. However, once I got the note, they stopped responding to my emails.
