I opted for the strawberry N butterscotch waffle, upgraded to an M&M waffle. Served with either whipped cream or vanilla soft serve - I chose the ice cream. The waffle is a good size waffle with M&Ms throughout, then topped with a healthy portion of chopped strawberries and drizzled with butterscotch syrup and white chocolate flakes. The vanilla soft serve is what you can expect from being vanilla soft serve. The hot cookie dough was awesome too! Served with vanilla soft serve as well (most desserts come with the option), we chose the cookie dough with smarties but there's about 5-6 choices. Hot and delicious! Needless to say... super full after splitting the cookie dough and having 1 whole waffle. My friend got the brownie waffle and devoured hers as well. Cookie dough was around 5.50 pounds & waffle was about 6.50 plus the 1 pound up charge for m&m based waffle. I would recommend if you have a sweet tooth!

Firstly it does have an American diner feel to it with the high back booths and pink and black colour scheme but they don't offer table service like you might expect. You get taken to your seats and provided with menu's but then place your order at the till when ready. The menu is quite simply divine!! Waffles, crepes, ice cream sundaes and cheesecakes galore make it a difficult decision but eventually I set my mind to a 'strawberry and waffle cheesecake'. It appeared the staff were unaware of this option on the menu as I was asked both at the till and at my seat to clarify my order. My friend's ice cream sundae was brought to the table very quickly but I was left waiting and our drinks were nowhere to be seen. Then they brought me a plain strawberry cheesecake....needless to say I sent it back only to be told they didn't have the one I ordered and I had to change my order to a waffle. My friend had by this point demolished her ice cream. So overall the service was fairly poor however it is early days and teething issues are bound to crop up! The waffle I eventually got with Nutella and coconut flakes was gorgeous-huge portion and I felt satisfied but not overly stuffed after it! Definitely recommend it and I only hope the customer service improves!!

I have to say, I have some hazy halcyon childhood memories of ice-cream sundaes or coke-floats in this place, so that may perhaps colour my perceptions of it somewhat. But I've taken children recently, and their faces light up in the same way I'm sure mind did. They have 4 cafes around the town centre, but this is the one I am constantly drawn back to. Set on the edge of town proper, opposite the Haymarket bus-station and near the University (with St. James not to far either!) it just feels a little more laid-back than the town-centre branches. As soon as you go in there's a more old-school feel than your modern coffee bars, accentuated by the photos of the store through the ages and the ice-cream carts which line the walls. The clientelle tends more towards locals and shoppers, with the students seemingly not noticing this is under their noses, so there is little modern cool (affected or otherwise) here, just a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They have a good range of sanwiches, also generally available as baguettes, panini, or wraps, and a choice of hot-food including a classic all-day breakfast. There's a great selection of cakes, and the coffee is good if not the best in town. But really, its the ice-cream that draws people back here. As soon as you sit down your eye is draw to the colourful photos on the comprehensive sundae menu. Its hard to concentrate on the main course as your mind turns over the question of the inevitable desert. The choice is dizzying and inventive, with themes by flavour, or colour, or liquer. As soon as you've made your choice the inevitable question is Which will I have the next time?, as you know there'll be a next time as soon as you start eating your current choice. Like many of the best things the secret seems to be quite simple: just make great tasting ice cream. Like the classic gelati, this just tastes of what it should - freshly and vibrantly. The concept of Hey, I know what we should put in this strawberry ice cream: strawberries. Not those chemicals someone has decided make us think we're eating strawberries. As I say, simple, but all to often goes wrong, in this country at least. But not at Mark Toneys! Cones are available, for when you can't manage a whole sundae, and take-away is available on most items too. They've just opened a Subway next to this branch, and I'm hoping that doesn't draw too much food business away. But these guys have been doing this for over 100 years now - I'm sure they've seen off plenty of other pretenders in that time!

They have ONE person working the cash register and the tables upstairs and downstairs. That person is never hospitable or nice, but hey, I would be crabby and rude too, if i had to serve the whole cafe myself. They really should stop being cheap and hire a second person, or at least hire staff that can actually hack it. In general, I find vegans and vegan establishments really nice, down-to-earth, and always good to their patrons. Probably because us vegans/ vegetarians are a rare breed and we feel the need to look after one another. Scrumpy feels differently though, to be fair, they're not entirely vegan, but from what I have been told, they are the "vegan" place to eat in town. I would never come back here again. They give vegans/ vegetarians a bad name. Also, my hard earned cash should not be spent on establishments that don't appreciate my business and are super rude to me. I also know of other places in town that serves vegan friendly dishes, albeit they're not officially vegan.

The staff were friendly and very chilled and we all really enjoyed our food: my omlette was so tasty and filling, and my sister's hummus and fallafal plate went down a storm! I really liked this place as a whole but the reason I docked two stars was because of the really really bad quality of their drinks; I had the house wine which was nothing short of vinegar-esque, my sister had the "smoothie" which was nothing more than a half-filled glass of watery fruit juice with a thick layer of foam at the top, and our friend went for the milkshake which literally looked like a glass of milk that had been jiggled around for a bit (no trace of any ice cream in the mix) My advice with this place is go here when in search of good value, filling food, but don't waste your money on the beverages!..

It's the sort of place you'd be more likely to find in London, and we're lucky that it's here. My fiancé took me here for dinner on the night that he proposed to me (!!) We had a reservation for a Wednesday night at 8. Definitely reserve, even on a weekday - it wasn't totally full up but at a place like this, you can't risk walking in! When we arrived they seated us downstairs in a casual seating area, where we were told we'd have a drink and decide which menu we wanted. We ordered a bottle of wine (many selections quite affordable - surprisingly), and opted out of the wine pairings with dinner as we'd already had loads to drink. We got the 7 course tasting menu (£65 per person - wine pairings would've been an additional £40). As we sipped our wine, we were brought our first appetizer - beautiful oysters served on a bed of seashells, and some chicken liver parfait. And a non-edible bowl filled with something that looked like seaweed, they poured broth over it to create this smoky scent and white smoke actually poured down over the table, for atmosphere. You know you're at a fancy place where they bring you something inedible as part of your course. After this, they took our wine upstairs where the main seating area is. The building is old and rustic, with exposed brick walls from the 16th century (so we were told). It has that cozy feel you get in an old building, smaller rooms and lower ceilings, etc. We then enjoyed the remainder of our courses over the next two hours or so - no sense telling you what we liked best as the menu no doubt changes seasonally and often. Almost nothing on the a la carte menu that they show on their website was in our tasting menu, it was a mostly totally unique menu. They cater to allergies and preferences even - I told them I didn't care for mushrooms and they left them off of 3 different dishes, each time I could hear the server saying "oh that's the one with no mushrooms." Nice touch! Service was very attentive and they explained each dish. The dishes were beautifully presented, like artwork on the plate. Some of the plates/bowls were quite fun - the soup was served in a tall, narrow bowl that was almost like a stone glass. Our favorite course was the onion-chorizo soup with house made bread. How ordinary does that sound? Yet it was STUNNING. I'd love to recreate that soup!! The fish courses were excellent, the quail was truly delectable, and I can still taste this sumptuous piece of foie gras when I close my eyes and remember. Everything tasted wonderful, nothing was overlooked at all. We skipped the cheese course (£8 per person if you go for it) as we really did get full, though all the courses were small. I think that quail is on the a la carte menu, by the by, as a first course. Go for it. Dessert was a very rich chocolate cake of some sort, my least favorite as I'm not a dessert person and it was so rich, but my fiancé loved it. We had another glass of wine at the end - they have some very unique wines by the glass including some from Uruguay and Lebanon. Yes, it's pricey - I think the bill came out to around £170 or so, for two. But you won't have another meal like it in town, and since it was the most special of all special occasions, it was worth it. Well, ask my fiancé if it was worth it, he treated me! It was a night I won't soon forget and you should absolutely spend a birthday, anniversary, or engagement dinner here!

This store is really small, and despite being located in quite a new mall, this store is highly old-fashioned and not a great place to be. The cafe is located upstairs, with no lift access, the staircase its-self is a really old one, considering the mall was built in 1977, it felt like this store hadn't been refurbished of that kind ever since. The selection also was a little poor other than probably around one wall of products, which were traditionally stocked items at a Thorntons store. The staff didn't seem too helpful, I wasn't welcomed until they saw me taking photos around the store, which I have uploaded onto Yelp, which seemed a little self-serving, how they only offered to help me when they saw me taking pictures, perhaps because they thought I was a reviewer or undercover shopper of some sort. There were brownies and caramel shortcakes on offer for only £1, but I restrained myself from getting these, as I felt I would burst with an ounce more chocolate inside me. The staff member that served us was friendly and helpful, and filled up Mary's water bottle, no problem at all. Definitely recommended.

Clearly no-one was trusted with petty cash to make a run to the local Tesco to save their blushes. This was a shame as it made me give them the benefit of the doubt and order the cheesecake which turned up rather over adorned with cream, ice cream, chocolate sauce (provoking the thought that a plum was atop the slice) and black cherries. Less would have been more. Prior to this drop off in standards though our meal was decent no issues with the starters (indeed the hummus was too much for one person) or the mains and pricing and service were both good. I wonder though how many people shell out £40+ for a bottle of wine when 2 courses are coming to only £10.95? May want to look at that pricing structure as well as the spelling on the ice cream board.
