If it wasn't for the fresh chips and cheerful manager, I'd give it one star. The service was ok-ish at first and then once I ordered was gone. I even had to ask for my own refill after she passed the empty cup 3 times. The food was just flavorless. The chicharones was just grease. No crisp or flavor as if it was soaking in it for a day of so. The meal was smothered in red chili. And it was even bland like tomato sauce with cayenne pepper. First time here. Very impressed. It's the definition of a 'locals' place. Very small, 10 or so tables, including 4 or 5 round booths. Floors and furniture are worn, it's cramped but tidy. The proprietress is there. The servers still take orders on paper pads. The portions are generous and tasty. The refried beans were very good. Empanadas, 3 to an order, are huge. I've not seen those anywhere else in our town. The house specialties are all smothered in a very good green chili. Chips and salsa are extra, but they are home made. Salsa is spicy and chips made fresh. The only negative was that it was too chilly in the room this evening. read more

Let me start out that this is a old gas station that had been converted into a diner decades ago and seems like it had gotten into a time warp in a good way. If your looking for the Ritz this is not. My wife and I have been going there for years and were there just a few days ago and planning on going there again tomorrow and we live in Colorado Springs. Rita passed away over a year ago and Phillip who has been there for years is still there keeping Rita's hopping moving about waiting tables and they get a lot of phone orders to go so answering the phone also, let say wearing a lot of different hats. We have always enjoyed there breakfast food and it is like stepping back into the 50s - 70s type road dinner hole in the wall. And the food prices are reasonable and portions are filling and there potato things that they serve with breakfast are outstanding. read more

Hands-down my favorite Mexican food restaurant in Pueblo. I've been living out of state for about 20 years and every time I visit my family, I stop in to Rita's and pick up an enchilada casserole and fly it home with me. On this last visit I had my own personal food war between Rita's and Mill stop and Rita's wins. The green chili is out of this world with just enough spice. The pork and avocado burritos, and chicken tacos on white are also amazing. Staff are incredibly friendly. I will say this place is a total dive, but based on my experience, some of the best food comes from establishments like these. If you are looking for ambience, do take out and make a margarita at home. This place is known for the food that they serve and not the decor. read more

We have been eating at Rita's since 1993 and it's no less scrumptious today than it was then! Even though we've moved far from Pueblo, we make it a point to stop in, if we drive through Colorado, which we were able to do yesterday. Somewhere I read an article interviewing CO Governor Polis and asking him his favorite restaurants in Colorado. I recall he said in that article that whenever he is in Pueblo, a top priority is to eat at Rita's. Naturally that piqued our interest. We found Rita's with the help of GPS. It was a gas station in its previous life. We were shocked/stunned by the appearance of the restaurant on the inside. It wasn't filthy, but the concrete floor was bare and there were large objects covered by a tarp on three or four tables and crooked pictures on the walls. We wondered if there had been a water leak through the ceiling. There were approximately eight tables available for seating and three attentive waitstaff persons. Service was friendly and fine-- and the food was good. I had an open face enchilada that was nicely prepared. The green chili was more mild than I expected. However, there were some nice pieces of pork and the flavors were generally good. My wife had a bean tostada and an enchilada that she thought featured Velveeta cheese. The bathrooms continued the decor theme that was downscale to say the least. One needs to get a key from the staff to get into the women's bathroom, which is located outside the restaurant and secured with a master lock, much as you would have found in a gas station years ago. Overall, Rita's was a mixed bag. The food is decent, but if you are hoping for any type of atmosphere other than "hole in the wall," you might want to look elsewhere. We left thinking this could be an ideal choice for Robert Irvine's Restaurant: Impossible series-- and also having some doubts about Gov. Polis' s restaurant picks. read more

Ugh. Rita's continues the plague of bad "Mexican" food here in Colorado. My buddies and I ended up at Rita's today when we found ourself in Pueblo when work sent us for mandatory training. Rita's happened to be close by and with 3.5 stars it was a gamble but one we decided to take. I felt like turning around the moment we walked in. The south entrance takes you through their storage area, and apparently the owner's kid's play area. It was a cluttered mess and very unprofessional. My second clue that Rita's was going to be a disappointment was that all the guests were blue haired white folks. The decor is straight out of the 60s. And there were flies buzzing around. All told it is one hell of a first impression. Pueblo is famous for their "Sloppers", and Rita's "Mexican food" utilizes the same technique... Drown everything with green or red chili. I had to really pay attention to realize that I had enchiladas, rice and beans under all the chili. The beans were awful, and the only thing worse than the beans was the rice. The beans were a soupy mess. Oh, and that instant "Mexican" rice from Lipton is better. My buddies really enjoyed their food. It might be time for some new friends, friends with taste. read more

My review for Rita's today, the waiter was a little rude, I guess a grandson, didn't really listen to anything we said, always in a hurry, bill was not itemized, the portions were a little smaller, for the same price we had gotten last time, rice and chili, was bigger last time, and if you ask for sides of things as diced tomatoes, onions and chili, boy you get a look, aren't those suppose to be free items? Unprofessional sometimes, I wouldn't have left a tip for him but my friend did, he's got a kind heart, I would have said fuck you!!! but oh well. And what is with man buns? Some of the best food comes out of little holes in the wall. This is definitely one of those places. If the ambiance is all your about, then turn around and walk away... but youll be missing out! This is Tex-Mex at its best. The 2nd time here and got great service and food both times! The Spanish rice was made just right, reminded me of my family's recipe, the green chili was delicious and I love that they smother the plate with it. Someone called it slop, well, it was the some of best damn slop! Tamale was tender and tasty. This place gets the beans right too... cause if the beans dont taste right, forget it!
