Boasting lighted fishing piers, picnic areas and a playground, boat ramp with fish cleaning stations, and nature trail, there are also 35 full-hookup RV sites. These waterfront spots attract many "Winter Texans" a.k.a. "Snowbirds who drive their RV's down to Texas during the cold months and hang out. The park was created by Cameron County, Texas to enhance boating and fishing on the river, which it has done. When I came by on a boat touring the Arroyo River area, the parking lot was full of big trucks who had towed in some boats to launch. My tour guide told me the trout was biting like crazy this time of year. Also the area hunting is pretty good too: wild turkey and pigs, deer, and the exotically tasty nilgai, among others. Despite the ideal location for all kinds of outdoor activities, the Adolph Thomas Park is a little on the small side. This is a multi-use park and there's the rub: on weekends the place is heavily used by anglers, boaters, and locals for picnics and hiking. During the week, it can be quiet. The RV park is nice but I have heard that some RV-ers complain it is smallish- and cramped. Also, when I used the restrooms, I noticed RED ANTS all around! Yikes! For those reasons, I deducted 1 YELP STAR. But the mesquite growing along the river give the Adolph Thomae Park a scenic feel and the staff keeps a pretty good eye on the area. Looks like a perfect place to come recreate in the great outdoors to me.

These folks really try to keep the place clean, but there are always a few dirtbags that litter. I've also camped out here and love love love it. Every so often late at night you might even get to hear the donkey that is kept across the arroyo. It cracked us up. DO keep the lid on your icechest bungeed down or you will wake to an enterprising racoon or two helping themselves. I love this place, Its beautiful and whether you want to fish in the day or under the lighted piers at night, you can't go wrong. There is a charge for pitching a tent, but pay it... you get the code for the showers and save the park ranger from hassling you if you have pitched a tent.

Plus our 2 hour tour ended up being nearly 4. The park was much prettier than I expected. The visitor center which had great items for sale was surrounded by beautiful foliage and benches. The waters and sand moving just as they have for centuries. You will see a few people out for the day up until the 5 mile marker warns you to use only a 4 wheel drive vehicle to procede. As I passed the warning sign I immediately began to strategically drive the sand. It could be easy for the uninitiated or less cautious to get stuck. The sites are all crushed gravel, which isn't as charming as grass but stays clean and drains well. The pool is a decent size, hot tub works, and the bathrooms are genuinely good; four individual rooms, each with their own shower and toilet, real AC that actually functions. No waiting in line, no communal chaos. That's worth something, especially in South Padre heat. There's a rec room that sits mostly empty during the day, a small gym, and laundry on site. The spot where Pier 19 used to be before it burned down now has premium RV spaces with better water views if that matters to you. Staff was friendly across the board, every interaction. It's a well-run park. Nothing blew us away, but everything worked, and that's more than you can say for a lot of places. Would come back.

Rio Grande Valley State Park! This place is in sort of…read morethese marshes, low lying fields in the RGV outside of Brownsville. We came in for a hike along their shortest trail, which wound through scrub brush, mesquite trees and the overwhelming sound of cicadas. We saw lots of armadillos on our hike, and several strange, menacing looking birds. The park has a nice ranger station with a gift shop where you can rent binoculars and get patches and other gear that you'll need to camp and hike along the park's many trails. Be sure to reserve ahead of time on the website. The park is quiet, other than the insects. When we went, it has hot as heck, and nobody else was on the trails. They do offer a few bird blinds, or places to relax in some shade and observe the birds. There seemed to be a planetarium or telescope or something, but the armadillos were preventing us from investigating this.

They are now catering to more transient worker and shifting away from Winter Texans.

I was in the area for the 2023 Texas Master Naturalist annual meeting. I don't like to stay in…read morehotels, so I turned it into a camping trip and brought my RV down. I usually stay in State Parks. Unfortunately, the Benson Rio Grande State Park, which was immediately across the street from this lovely RV park, does not have camping. After carefully studying the area for good RV places to stay, I decided on this one. Two other couples from the Alamo Area chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists also stayed there. I can't say a whole lot about the facilities, as I had no time to enjoy any of the luxurious amenities available. I can tell you that this was the most beautifully laid out RV park I have ever seen. The entire place is landscaped with Texas natives. The varieties of flowers that were blooming was nearly overwhelming. The birds flying all over were equally enchanting. I probably could've thrown a rock from my camper to the border wall. That was interesting for me. I watched several border patrol vehicles passing by on the street just outside of the fence. I felt 100% secure the entire time I was there. The park is only 9/10 of a mile from the National Butterfly Center. as I mentioned before, it is also right across the street from the state park. In fact, there is a gate that takes you directly to the visitors parking for the state park. The resort was extremely quiet. I don't know if that would be true when it is filled to capacity with Winter Texans, but I wouldn't be there. The seasonal price is really high. The location is only about 8 miles from downtown McAllen. It was very convenient to get to all of my field trips and the conference at the convention center. The RV park is under new management. The couple that runs it are two of the nicest people you could ever meet. They are extremely accommodating and welcoming. They have a wonderful place, and they really know how to run it. I will stay at this particular location anytime I am in the area in the future. Since most of my time was taken up with conference activities, there is still a lot of exploring I would love to do in that area. The Rio Grande Valley is an amazing place for birding. I would love to do more of that.
