I'm a sucker for punishment, and I mean that in a good way. I started going to River Valley Health a few years a back in the height of my running days due to running related injuries. Where does the punishment aspect come in? Well, going for treatment, especially Active Release Treatment (Techniques) - OUCH! River Valley Health provides chiropractic, A.R.T. (Active Release Techniques), physiotherapy, massage therapy to name a few. River Valley Health focuses on sports related prevention and injury treatment, repetitive strain disorders and joint and soft tissue injuries. I often forget that my extended health care plan includes reimbursements for massage therapy, and so I go long periods without using such services. But when I do find the time and book an appointment here I'm never disappointed. Finally I found a place that takes good care of me, provides great service and where I'm never disappointed. Most massage places I've visited in the past are not nearly good enough at providing more than light massage, but here I can receive good reliable treatment. I have been going here for about a month now. I wanted to wait to see my results before posting a review. I have been to 3 or 4 different physiotherapists in my lifetime, all the the same issue (my back and ankle). I was always skeptical of chiropractors for the mere fact that adjustments meant possible compromising my spine. Wow, was I wrong.. My friend had gone to RVH and hadn't great things to say about it. She mentioned that they use active release techniques along with adjustments.Still a bit unsure, I booked an appointment with Melissa. The clinic is located in college plaza by the University. Only issue is that there is only street parking to the best of my knowledge. The space is modern and spacious. Each client has their own room which was a change from the spaces separated by curtains at many of my physios. Melissa was awesome! She got all my history, and talked me through all concerns I had with "adjusting." She didn't pressure me but made me feel comfortable with the techniques she was using. After my first treatment my back felt so much better (I would equate the treatment to the massage therapy on steroids!!) I have been going for 4 weeks now and I'm feeling a lot more mobility in my back and ankles. I would definitely recommend RVH for someone who wants a hands treatment :) read more

April R-C. delivers insanely great results with very targeted therapy going to the root issues that problematic areas may stem from to get lasting effective results. She advises on techniques that you can do yourself to stay in optimal condition and shares her expertise happily. April is efficient and above all else, she's sincere. She really just wants to help you and get you feeling 100% again. I didn't realize how tight my left lower back was than my right and I came in for work to reduce pain in my trap/neck area. RVH has been my go-to for massage and chiropractic therapy for the past three years. The staff are professional, personable, and caring. Jeff (Dr. Prince) is especially effective in treating my TMJ dysfunction. I'd heard all the horror stories about chiropractors and I was hesitant, but when my RMT at the time referred me to him, I decided to try it. Jeff worked at my comfort level and didn't do any adjustments until we had really built adequate trust. Amy is a great RMT, but when I presented a need for greater pressure, she referred me to Deanne for deep tissue. I now rotate between Deanne and Brad, who have different deep tissue techniques. Go to either for a good, firm treatment! If you don't have the pain tolerance for deep tissue, see Amy. Recently I started seeing Leyanna (Dr. Zubach) for acupuncture. I'm also quite content with the care I receive from her. Bonuses: -they gave me a piece of cake once when they had birthday cake in the office -front desk sends e-mail reminders for appointments -when I saw Jeff following a massage treatment and he asked how I was, I said "okay, but I think last week we missed a spot in my back" and he snuck me in within 15m for a complementary treatment -in my experience I haven't been overtreated. As a former football player and hockey player, and all out abuser of my body, I can attest to having lots of treatment over my 35 years on this planet...and none better than the treatment I get at RVH. Just as others have said, staffs are very friendly and professional. I mostly come here for massages and chiropractors. They treat a lot of sports and athletes so they understand real muscles tensions, strains, back issues and how to release/treat them. This place is not the kind where you get dimmed light and soothing music for nap times. There is also a small gym at the back for rehabilitation exercises. It takes a lot to be a good therapist. I have had several therapists and my experience have mostly been positive. There were a few misses here and there. A few examples are: if you get the last appointment of the day, you might get someone who just wants to get it over with and go home; Therapist chit-chatting with her assistant while working on your problem areas and you wonder if they are really paying attention to what they are doing. Another thing to be aware of is that if you book a 1 hour massage appointment, you are really only getting 45-50 minutes actual treatment. It takes 5-10 minutes for consultation and getting positioned on the bed. The massage always ends 5 minutes before the end of your appointment. You have to get off the bed and get dressed immediately because the therapist has 1 minute to prepare for the next session. Also make sure you are on time, because appointments are scheduled so tightly, you will not get your full massage if you are late, but still have to pay full price. read more

I needed a new massage therapist and found this place through a google map search. Had no idea what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. They all seem very professional, knowledgable, and dedicated to what they do. I have only seen one of their massage therapists since I like what she does and therefore always ask for her. I bet the other therapists are good too. In addition, their offices are bright and clean, the staff always friendly and welcoming, and the price seems reasonable. I have been coming to River Valley Health since 2012. After many years sitting at a desk, I started to have some issues with my neck. My colleague at the time recommended her chiropractor, Dr. Tyler Fix. I loved that his name was Dr. Fix ;) but he was also a very good chiropractor. He has since moved on to a different practice. Since I didn't want to leave River Valley (it is very close to my work), he recommended Dr. Danielle Pickering. She has been my chiropractor for the last 2 years. She has fingers of steel! She could work out any issues that I was having with my neck and then helped me with an ankle injury. River Valley just opened up a second location, The Base by RVH, and it is on the West end of the city. Dr. Pickering is now only working from this new location. Yesterday, I had an appointment with Dr. Melissa Young and she is wonderful. She is very personable and thorough and the adjustment I had from her saved me from continuous pain that I was having in my neck. I will be continuing my maintenance treatments with her. I have had three different chiropractors here and have only ever had great experiences. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and I am always greeted with a smile from the ladies at the front. read more

Highly recommend meeting up with one of their performance coaches if you are involved in a sport, their professionals tailor their focus to suit your needs. They have greatly helped clarify many of my assumptions and habits surrounding a largely self developed training program. RVH sponsors the MacEwan Triathlon Club through which you can get substantial discounts, also look for them at community athletic events which they are sponsor (i.e. Canada Day Road Race) as they usually have 25% discount vouchers on display for promotion. read more

I have seen 4 different doctors/Chiro/anyone who will listen about my extreme lower back pain! No one could relieve me and I lived with it for over 3 years! Dr. Fix is the only person who could make it better! I am so happy I found this place and would recommend it to anyone! If you have pain they can all make it better! Absolutely fabulous massage from April. I am now loose like a long neck goose. She asked all the right questions, heard my concerns, and focused on solving my immediate and long term problems. Melissa Young is Amazing. She is very nice and personable, which is nice, but she is very thorough and doesn't force anything. She helped me after years of physio therapy. She was able to fix a couple things in one visit, she was able to fix a couple more after 3-4 visits, and a few things took longer. When she did the assessment with me she was very knowledgeable and realistic in her plan. When my neck was hard to adjust she didn't force it, but she worked with colleagues to figure out a way to safely fix me up. After a short time I was able to start doing light exercise and after 6 months, I was doing stairs. She has worked on my son, 16 years old, who is a dancer, to help him with injury and to stay in tip top shape. She also works on my 8 year old gymnast daughter. She even convinced my very skeptical of chiro husband after watching everyone else get better quickly. Top notch for sure!! read more
