I live in Santa Cruz County not San Francisco. Marcelo called me right away after I asked for a YELP quote. He said that he had driven by my house and he had saw the Queen Palm. He gave me an estimate and said he could be there first thing in the morning. The next morning, Marcelo and his assistant showed up on time at 8 am. I then asked him to give me a quote to cut down the diseased lemon tree in front of the queen palm as well. He gave me the quote and we agreed. Marcelo made quick work of the lemon tree and he started on the queen palm. He cut down the queen palm section by section. In all, it took Marcelo about 45 minutes to cut down both trees and about the same amount of time to shred the wood. I am very satisfied with the work. read more

We had seven full grown Queen Palm trees that had turned very ugly. The branches were constantly dying back, then drooping and what was left was yellow. Queen Palms don't do well in Watsonville. These were 12 years old and of course, extremely tall with huge trunks. I called Marcelo, owner of Rivera Tree Service, and he came to my home within an hour to give me an estimate which was very fair and affordable. HE WAS THERE THE NEXT MORNING AT 8 AM with his brother to start the work. Marcelo climbed the trees and sawed sections as his brother climbed a ladder propped up against our back fence, and threw everything over, near his wood chipper. What a hard working team. He had all the trees down within three hours, then thoroughly cleaned up my back patio. They ran all the limbs and trunk pieces through the "chipping" machine. The Weeping Monterey Cypress that Marcel worked on in October lost several branches this winter, and two more the other day. He was supposed to reduce the weight off the ends so this wouldn't happen. He mainly took out a number of branches without lightening the remaining ones. I now have holes on two sides of the tree, and will have to call someone out again to remove the "widow-makers" hanging in the tree. This is two reviews: 1.Marcello is a fair and honest man who does outstanding work. Marcello has manicured two of our oak trees that are absolutely beautiful. The rates are more than reasonable. 2. On Mothers Day I was working in my yard with my family. My Parrot decided to join us. The very long story short~ is that a blue jay dive bombed my Parrot and scared her...... She flew away into an oak tree about 150ft up. I knew that if I didn't get her down that afternoon she was dead. I tried a few different things, and finally I thought I am going to call Marello. I did, and he came out to help me in less than 30 minutes. Marcello came completely prepared on a Sunday. He was positive, and helpful. He climbed the tree in minutes and saved my parrots life. I have had my Parrot for 20 years. My Parrot is worth a few thousand dollars, and is a member of our family. His help will forever be remembered by me and my family. I am a landlord that lives on the other side of the hill in San Jose, I called Marcelo to have him provide an estimate to trim back trees on the property (in Santa Cruz) and he arrived quickly and provided a great rate for the job. We went over the details and I went with another tree service because the estimate was not provided via email and there was a tree that wasn't going to be touched that I wanted trimmed. I gave this service a 5 star rating because the tree work was excellent. But then I went outside the next day and found my greenhouse had been damaged. They knew they did it and didn't say anything to me at the time. When I looked out from my house the greenhouse is not in view so I didn't see the damage. I only found it the next day. Over 5 phone calls during the week with no call back to me for assistance with my greenhouse is an example of a really poorly run company. I am truly disgusted with them. I hope people read this and learn from my bad experience. I was ripped off and now I have to purchase a new greenhouse. Shame on them! read more

Marcelo's estimate was clearly the best, but I was also impressed by how knowledgeable and easy to work with he was. It took a few back and forth calls to get the estimate, and set an appointment. Game day he was there at the appointed hour, and proceeded to execute the work himself in an organized, proficient way,....plus he was very flexible regarding aesthetic issues. I had called on Marcello and his crew for 2 separate jobs in the last 2 months- removal of a huge tree and trimming of huge tree + smaller trees. I was pleased with the work from the 1st job and had called on him for the 2nd job. He had accommodated a 60-mile drive to give bid on the 2nd job. They were very responsive, coming to the sites to give bid within 24 hours. Both times, I had solicited multiple bids for 1st job; 2 bids for the 2nd job. Both of Marcello's bids were very competitive (one is even at 1/2 of the next higher-up bid). Marcello called to confirm of the appointments and were on time, if not earlier, on dates of bid and on dates of work. The crew were very efficient and accommodating, doing more than (trimming up branches to make the tree looking better, not just simply chopping senselessly) what were intended in the original assessment, without complaining nor demanding for additional $. The crew had cleaned up the job site with manually picking up the small branches, and blowing clean the premises and even the adjacent common areas, neighboring properties' yards. I appreciate the time and the care Marcello and the crew took to ensure they left the properties, the trees (or no tree:)) looking better than when they arrived. We got several quotes for trimming ten trees in our yard. His bid was the lowest by far and he called us back within a couple days to close the deal. Another company told us that it would take a crew of four all day to do the work and that they were booked out for over a month. Marcelo and one helper did the job within the week and were done in three hours. They took great care not to damage the fence, any surrounding plants, or any of our neighbors' property. They left our yard nearly spotless and our trees look great. When our trees need some TLC, I will call Marcelo again. read more

I had some really overgrown trees in my backyard that needed a lot of work. Like the rest of you, I went to yelp to find out who to call. I found about 4 places with decent reviews and made some calls. 2 places didn't even return my calls. Another wanted an absurd amount of money because they had an arborist on staff. Then I called Rivera Tree Service. They came out within a couple hours to give me a free estimate. Marcelo was great. He talked me through the whole process of what they would do and what would be best for my unique situation. I explained my concerns about the branches damaging my other plants and he assured me that they would rope the branches to make sure that there was no damage. He gave me a very reasonable quote and had me call to setup an appointment. I set it up with the woman who works the phone (not sure of her name, but she was great too!) After we had set it up they called because they had a cancelation and wanted to know if I wanted the job done sooner. I said yes and they were out the next day. They did an amazing job on the trees. I now have so much more sunlight coming into my yard and house. They were professional, clean and courteous. Based on my experience in trying to find someone to do the job, it is hard to find a reliable company to do tree work.
