Not only do they have a…read moremarvelously varied selection - everything from your most exotic veg to your more mundane staples - it is also *cheap.* I dare you to find a chain grocery store that comes close to underselling these folks. Yet, unlike some inexpensive fruit and veg stands.. where you feel like you'd have to scrub the skin off your produce before you'd be convinced it was sanitary enough to eat... Ali's, wonderfully, doesn't feel cheap... there's nothing dingy or unclean about the place... everything is kept tidy and orgnanised and beautifully stacked. The other thing that keeps me coming back here is the shop's proprietor. He is always smiling and courteous - and well, one of those kindly sort of people that you just *want* to buy from... again, try finding someone like that at Tesco's HQ!

Owned by two of the most helpful and friendly grocers in London- Adrian and Jason- the shop sells high quality fresh fruit and vegetables on a seasonal basis. Everything is beautifully arranged- the presentation is immaculate, especially at Halloween and Christmas. My friends who live locally, will now not shop anywhere else. They even arrange weekly vegetable and fruit boxes through them. Last Summer I asked them to put together a small fruit platter for me- I only had 20 pounds- and they delivered the most enourmous, extravagant platter that few 20 people. I was so impressed- they put in beautiful apples, strawberries, pears, mango and melon- a lot of the money. They also stock an amazing selection of pickles, preserves and Chegworth Valley apple juices.

Don't ask me how they do it, but somehow they manage to offer fruit and veggies that are not only of much better quality that anything you could get at a supermarket, but that are also much more affordable. The class…read morewas held at a Secondary school in Lewisham and the ovens that we used for the class were extremely temperamental (being school ovens) and resulted to most of our cupcakes being slightly burned or generally overcooked and therefore very dry. When I contacted 'Greenwich Pantry' expressing my disappointment about the class, they offered us a 10% refund or an alternative class for free which I appreciated. So overall not bad but I would be weary of attending a class again, especially if it was done at a school; being a teacher I am aware that school facilities are not always the best ones!

However it is not just the picking and the size of the PYO farm that makes this place amazing but its the people that run the farm too. It is family run and they are always every so friendly and welcoming. They are such a popular PYO farm that they even have coach loads of people come along to PYO. When there is no fruit / veg to pick in winter they have boot fairs. However all year round they do have a small farm shop / hut that you can buy produce from such as veg, honey, eggs, cream etc.

It's an independent greengrocers and the advantage is that they have much tighter control over the supply and quality of their produce. Greengages? Check - they were super sweet. Seedless watermelon? The lady was able to pick me out a super sweet one. Fresh free range eggs? Yup and I did do a comparison 'float/sink' test with some eggs I got from the supermarket. These were fresher. However, if they do come here to shop, it will probably primarily because they want to support their local greengrocers (as I do) but also because the change of ownership has resulted in an upturn in quality. It is still sometimes a bit of a mixed bag but in the main the vegetables and fruit which are in good condition. The range is also excellent. In addition to the usual fruit and vegetables, plants and cut flowers are also available to purchase and at Christmas, this is a source of Xmas trees and wreaths. However, I have not strayed away from the fruit/vegetables as yet.

Compared to the supermarkets it is so much cheaper. The price of cherry tomatoes and grapes are about a third or 50% less here than in Sainsburys down the road. Plus the quality of the produce is fantastic: those cherry tomatoes have never looked or tasted so good. There is the occasionally something bad, but this is a minor thing, and preferable generally to the tasteless stuff you get from the supermarkets. *except bean sprouts. The value for money is good. The vegetables are always excellent and they have a good selection of products: 4 or 5 types of potatoes, cauliflowers, green beans, chillies, peppes... And lots of other staff I have never seen in my life! The fruit is not that good. It looks pretty but it is not as tasty as the veggies. But the thing I like the most is the great selection they have of international products. They stock a lot of Eastern European food (especially Poland) and also Asian staff, like shitake mushrooms and different varieties of noodles!
