My two boys took fly fishing lessons from Kelly at River Girl Fishing. She is amazing with kids. They love all things fishing and she was so great teaching them all things fly fishing. She taught them how to tie flies, where to stand in the river, when to fish, and most importantly how to be a good steward of the land. They supplied waders, boots and rods. Pros: The town of Todd is small and easy to find. The staff was super friendly, helpful, kind and knowledgeable. The scenery on the New River was outstanding. The fishing was fantastic as well. (Trout, Chubb and Bass) Cons: the building is not clearly marked as River Girl Fishing Company. The Transportation vans were old. ( totally fine though) I wish we had been advised to only do the hour and a half trip as the three hour trip took almost 5 hours considering how low the river was, we spent much of our time dragging the kayak down the river rather than having a relaxing ride. My husband and I rented kayaks and had an excellent time. We booked in advance which I would highly recommend so that they kayaks are out waiting for you. We went out right when they opened, at 9am. Incredibly friendly and informed staff. Option for 90 min or 3 hour kayak. We choose 90 minute. What's nice is that is is one way river kayaking ride so you don't have to deal with paddling against the current. It was a stronger current and we were done in under 1 hour. Even at stronger current, it was 100% leisure, not at all intimidating for novice kayakers, and we probably just floated for 1/2 the time. We brought our dog and they easily and happily accommodated with a larger kayak for me to bring him along. read more

We had a good experience with RiverGirl Fishing Company. I read a few of the not so good reviews and the one that mentioned the walk back was actually a big plus for us because it allowed everyone in our party to dry off a bit before we piled back into our car! Customer service was friendly enough. Be prepared to bring cash or pay via Venmo. Farm animals were a hit. The place looks a little like a junk yard but I thought it gave the place a pretty cool vibe. I've been tubing many different places, and this was a 4 star trip for us. The river is nothing like Reedy River in downtown Columbia (no rapids or fun spots that you'd want to trek up the river a bit to do over again) but overall it had a good flow to it and we never had to paddle ourselves to keep moving along. read more

We visited River Girl over the weekend. This was by far, the best and most memorable experience EVER!!  RiverGirl Fishing Company is THE most AMAZING place you will EVER visit. The staff is exceptionally friendly. The pets are the BEST! Please go visit the baby goat (Chief) Mischief. The highlight of the day was watching Renata feed him from a baby bottle. They also have Peppa the Pig alongside 2 hens (Coretta and Loretta) !!! Kelly is the most knowledgeable Fisheries Biologist you will EVER meet. They don't miss a detail! From ensuring electronic devices are properly secured in waterproof bags, keys safely stored until your return and shuttles promptly dispatched; you will feel like royalty. We took home a bag of affordably-priced souvenirs. To top it off, Rivergirl served grilled watermelon and grilled bacon-wrapped bananas to every passerby. Returning from a 3-hour trip on the river to a friendly environment makes all the difference in the world. Rivergirl offers an experience that money can't buy! Never tubing with them again! I encourage everyone to go with another company if you want to have a good experience!! Wanting to try another company to add a little variety, I called Rivergirl to give them a try. The initial call: - Poor customer service! I was taught that if you don't ever ask, you won't receive. After I booked 2 tubes for $20 I asked to see if she would toss in a cooler tube. She asked why would I do that? I told her that the company I usually take, does. She then said I was blackmailing her. I should have taken that as a warning sign not to go with this company!! I responded with, I just wanted to try out another company to see the difference, and see if I could get comparable service. She said this time only she would give me the locals 'tod residence' rate. $10/ tube & $15/ cooler. I thought, well that's even better than what I originally asked for & went ahead and booked it. Arrival and check in: -As I was waiting in line, I was greeted with 'Your not going to be wearing those are you?' . .as she's looking down at my flip flops. (I'm pretty sure that was the owner) After the phone call a few days prior, I was prepared in having my keens, but before I could even answer she said I could rent them for $2. No thank you!! Now at the register, the lady introduced herself as the one I spoke to on the phone. She checked us in said it would be $36. I had only brought my credit card and to my surprise they don't accept cards. I luckily had $34 dollars in the car for emergencies which they luckily did accept. For a minute they were asking me to mail them the $2. The company asks that you give them your keys, so they know if you've come back from the river since they don't pick you up. Other possible purchases: water $1 Sick to push off the ground $2 (not needed) Gather Everyone: -They ask everyone to come in close to the front porch, they say the rules, a bit of history, close toed shoes, belongings, ect. Transportation- Terrible! - Only 1 way. They don't pick you up when your done. They make you walk back, if you want to get back to your car. -Rickity old van. No AC. I asked if they would put down the window in the front rt door. The driver said it was broken. And couldn't do anything about it. -The van was packed with us like sardines. They literally asked 'would anyone take a child of their lap'. Seriously!!! First Row.. It was the driver, some girl working for rivergirl sitting on the floor board in the front. She pushed our coolers into our knees just so she could sit there. They had another girl sitting in the front with a girl sitting on her. 2nd Row.. A dog runs into the car and sits on my friends feet. Which they would not pull out. Another girl at the end of our row, and at least 6 people behind us. Someone behind us said they were getting wet because the seats are fabric and don't dry. Finally on the river- the best part away from River girl. When your done: - Be prepared to walk. No one is waiting for your arrival. Just be on the look out for some old fence and a log. You have to walk road side and then across church property & inside to collect your keys. read more

RiverGirl game my family a great time on and near the river during a recent visit. They are taking COVID- related sanitation seriously. All staff wear masks and take special care to sanitize the equipment between guests. They have excellent customer service as well. After our first adventure with them (biking and tubing), Kelly provided her cell phone number so we could more easily book our kayaking trip later in the week. They were knowledgeable about which boats would be best for our family gave suggestions on how to safely bring out dogs (novice kayakers) down the river, too. While waiting for our car at their base, we hung out with their pig, ducks, and chickens (ask about how Curry got her name). The prices were a little steep after thinking about it in hindsight, but the experience was great. The staff was very thorough and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. It was a really nice 2-3 hour trip down the River. I don't know that I'd pay those prices again (when compared to the cost of purchasing our own tubes), but it was definitely nice to have a trouble free experience on our first such adventure. What is not to love about a laid-back river expedition establishment that also boasts a hot dog cart in the front yard and a 400 lb pig in the shop? Seriously, they had us at the pig- Petunia. Or, they had us with the hot dog cart... either way, this was a great experience! Our family of 5 rented kayaks, 1 was a double for mom and 5 year old, the others were singles for children 12, 10, and 40. They shuttled us up the mountain to drop into the river. The river was shallow but had a consistent current. Admist the splashing, and paddling and the jumping in and out of the kayaks, we also took in beautiful scenery, and wildlife, and farm animals. Moo. We stopped to build rock sculptures to leave for others to enjoy. Our kids (and we) loved doing this! It was like playing jenga and legos in nature! We did not bring water or snacks and wish we had. We did wear plenty of sunscreen and river shoes-- both are a must. I also wore athletic shorts and a tee shirt, my children wore their bathing suits. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the adult-in-a-bathing-suit-and-life-jacket look but certainly it is appropriate in this neck of the woods! Once at the end of the river (1.5 hours) we got out, left our kayaks for them to pick up and walked a five minute little jaunt back to the River Girl shop. My children and husband got $1.00 hotdogs with chili, cole slaw and saurkraut. Can you say deal? -- towards the end of the stretch of river the water bacame very shallow and I spent a lot of time getting us unstuck, a double kayak would not be a good idea for two adults, or even tweens.-- -- we met a man who said it took them 4 hours to tube down the same stretch of river, which is a long day on the water, so be aware!-- read more

All I needed was a fishing license and some advice on where to fish. The young lady was very nice and gave me some tips on some nearby places to fish. I called a couple days before I headed up to Todd and Kelly answered a lot of my questions over the phone. She also told me their hours that week and was willing to open up if I gave them a call before 10:30 during times they would normally be closed. How can you beat that. This was our second or third time using River Girl to go tubing down the New River. I've never set up the trips before, but I did this time. Kelly was really easy to work with to reserve our tubing slot. We got up Saturday morning to head to the mountains. Arrived early for our launch time of 3pm. Always amusing to arrive there because there's a collection of animals wandering about the premises. This time we noticed the kittens, chickens, and roosters first. Then we saw the bunny rabbits (not roaming free). The animals definitely made our arrival that much more fun. Outside River Girl, there are two changing tents and two port'o potties. Some people in the group took advantage of these though. Check in was easy. We all signed waivers and paid our portion. Thankfully, we had the option of tubes without bottoms and tubes with bottoms. The tubes without bottoms had cup holders, but it was a bit cool so we chose the tubes with bottoms. Cooler rafts are also available to tote along your beverages. Tubing sessions are available in increments. Usually, it's 1, 3 or 4 hours. Because it was cooler, we were fine with being picked up two hours in. Katie was SO awesome. Easygoing and friendly with check in, the drive down, and picking us up in the van. What a sweet, cool person and perfect for making our lazy river floating experience that much better. Have visited twice for the three hour tubing with whole family. One of the most relaxing things I've ever done. Tubes are very comfortable and have drink holders. Highly recommend the cooler tube for your drinks and snacks. Excellent customer service. Very friendly people and pet pig. :) A-O River. Bad weather rolled in during our second visit. We were quickly "rescued" and immediately offered a partial gift certificate for a chance to come back. To me, this was above and beyond good service and the reason I am taking the time to review. I googled fishing guides for an upcoming trip to North Carolina and found that River Girl Fishing was closest to where I would be staying. I contacted Kelly to discuss setting up a guided trip with her. She was very accommodating to try and make our trip happen despite bad weather and schedule conflicts. Ultimately the weather did not cooperate and we were unable to make something happen. Despite this, Kelly offered all kinds of helpful advice over the phone on how to go about fishing a smaller stream that was right near where I was staying, in case there was a break in the weather. It was obvious she had a genuine passion for what she does and went above and beyond trying to help me despite not being able to use her guide services. I will definitely be setting a trip up with her next time I'm in NC. read more

What a fun little place to gather for a river trip! We chose to kayak but many were there to tube. While waiting for the vans to be loaded up we were amused by the many animal friends they have, pig, bunny, kittens, dogs, chickens, fish and a salamander. The staff was very accommodating and friendly!! After our trip on the river there is a short walk thru the tiny town of Todd back to the parking lot. We came back to find a flat tire, the staff came out to check on us and even offered to change it for us, we had called AAA so we just waited and they stayed until we were on our way, so sweet of them!!! Good time and good experience. Staff called morning of just to let us know the forecast called for chance of rain but they were going ahead with launch. Check-in seemed a bit chaotic. Tubes were nice and yes van was pos but we were going river tubing not to senior prom so we weren't expecting a stretch limo. Overall good experience. I have used many tubing/kayak companies and this was by far my worst experience. $70 experience (single canoe) with shoe rentals and waters purchased as well and they don't even pick you up when you're done. The ride there was weird as well because a younger girl was giving another young man (who must barely be old enough to drive) directions to the starting point and he had nooo clue where he was even taking us! The river level was extremely low as well, which they didn't warn us about until after we had booked the trip and driven all the way out there. They also gave us no warning they only accept cash, check, or venmo payment so be prepared for that... Not great, river girls! read more

We have had multiple experiences at Rivergirl. This last experience was quite disappointing as the water was incredibly low and they should not be sending people out. It provided for a miserable experience for all involved. You had to carry or drag your kayak most of the way as you got stuck on rocks every few feet. read more

Friendly folks and very nice trip. The river is beautiful, but shallow in some places- we had to get in the water to unstick ourselves a few times. We enjoyed it actually - but I only mention it for those wondering if you get wet. The extra entertainment was their resident pet: a massive and slow moving pig. My only nit and advice is to check your equipment before leaving: one of our oars had a missing handle and our canoe's center spar was broken. Not a tragedy- but a mild pain in the ass that we had to deal with for the whole trip - and keeps me from giving 4 stars. read more

Wish we had discovered this place earlier in our trip! My husband and sister took the fly fishing lessons early on Friday from 9-12 (which they really enjoyed!) then we came back and did the 1hr tubing with the kids. I really didn't think they'd sit for the 3hr one, but turns out they really enjoyed it too! Hoping off their tube every couple feet to find some cool rocks (water really isn't to deep). We all enjoyed it so much we turned around and booked the 3hr tubing for the next day, with my husband and sister fishing a little beforehand. I'd highly recommend this place!! Some of the staff seemed a little spacey at times, but the owner was friendly and on top of EVERYTHING so no need to worry!! Just wish we could have gone more, my only regret! Fun and way affordable! I checked out the rates at home for the same exact type of tubing experience and it's $45 a person and no alcohol allowed vs $15-$20 byob at river girl!! Terrible Experience! No Excuse! There is no excuse for the experience we had yesterday at RiverGirl Fishing Company! We reserved 5 kayaks for a 3 hour adventure down the New River at 2:00 pm. We were asked to be there by 1:30 pm. We were 20 minutes early and still didn't depart on time. The 3 vans stopped 3 times on the way to our adventure, to help others unload and deploy tubes, kayaks and patrons. At about 3:00 pm, we made it to the final stop and they were 4 kayaks short of what had been rented! Our choice was to wait there "stranded" for them to go back to the starting point to retrieve kayaks for us, or to return with them to cancel the trip. We returned to the renting location and there were no more kayaks! Additionally, there was another group who had just experienced the same thing! The outfitters had no idea what had happened and assured us it had never happened before. They refunded our money and we were on our way. They couldn't refund the hour drive--both ways--or our afternoon. Very poor operation. read more
