Yesterday, Dr. Portnoy was kind enough to fit me in when my Cotton Patch Goose, Light, was hit by a car. Her care and reassurance helped make both of us feel more confident that with time and rest he will mend. My backyard sheep, ducks, and geese fall somewhere between 'pets' and 'livestock' for me. Having vets like Dr. Portnoy and Dr. Gilmore who are willing to provide farm vet services when needed is a gift. I greatly appreciated Dr. Portnoy's kindness and personal attention - even calling this morning to check in and see how we were making out. It's so hard to find a good vet. You have to configure in so much. Price, travel distance, good staff and able to trust the vet. Riverside Animal Hospital checks all the boxes for me. They're wonderful people and very attentive to my cats comfort. I've had a few of the vets there and my cats all seem to like Dr. Gilmore. She is gentle, caring and patient. They give you the facts and don't try to push unnecessary tests or specific care for your animal. They absolutely understand my fluffers are my life and I feel safe with my babies in their care. I took my cat for annual exam and vaccines. After the bloodwork, the doctor called me and told me that my cat has high thyroid levels way above the range, and that he should be on high dose of medication. When I asked about his exact number and the range, the doctor went to check the paperwork and came back apologizing saying that his thyroid level is normal! Then they charged for full blood and fecal test. When I wanted to drop the fecal sample 17 days afterwards, they said I can only drop 14 days from the payment date, and I have to pay again. They never communicated this time window to begin with. I was made to pay a service, which I never got and now they want me to pay again. Overall, I paid $550 for annual exam and a bunch of vaccines. read more

I have been bringing my animals there for years. Dr. Portnoy is the best. She is very knowledgeable and really seems to care about your pet. There have been a lot of new vets in there of recent, some I have liked, and some not so much. All of them however, including the vet techs really show their love for animals. I've been to vet places where they just come into the room and don't interact with your pet other than giving them a physical or shot, etc. At RSA everyone comes in the room, says hi to my dog, and talks to him throughout. Might seem like a crazy thing for me to comment on, but that is just really important to me. I want to feel like they love and care about my dog, and that's how I feel they can show that to me and RSA and all of the employees I've interacted with, have done that. read more

MONEY HUNGRY MANIPULATORS. I've been bringing my fur babies here for a few years out of convenience but this was the last straw. They're very expensive, and love to sell extras to you. They're very pushy about it and when you decline something that is not necessary they will try to manipulate and guilt trip you into doing it. A month ago I brought one of my dogs for his annual check up. Covid has not been very nice to me financially and when I was approached outside (because they're still doing curbside... which leads to MOUNTAINS of miscommunications and an inability to properly advocate for your animals) I made it VERY clear that I was on a strict budget for his services. I requested to only do "what is required" for this check up, which is an exam, basic testing, and the rabies vaccine. They discovered that my poor boy was fighting an ear infection so we needed to treat him for that as well. I never received an estimate or an invoice on what everything would come to total. After all is said and done, they bring out the bill and it was almost $600 and they ADMINISTERED ADDITIONAL VACCINES THAT I DID NOT AUTHORIZE FOR THIS VISIT. Let alone the fact that you should NEVER vaccinate anyone who is currently fighting an infection. I voiced my concerns that I didn't authorize all of that but they would not let me get my dog back until I paid the bill and they refused to work with me on it. I returned home and immediately noticed a large rash across his stomach. I had to call again and they wanted us to bring him back in to "monitor" and give him Benadryl if needed, that he was likely having a vaccine reaction.. great.. for the vaccines they didn't even have permission for in the first place. When all is said and done I called back to speak to the vet about it because I felt financially taken advantage of and that is a form of malpractice in and of itself, let alone the over vaccinating during an active infection. Dr. Gilmore continued to gaslight me over the phone chocking it up for "miscommunication" and told me it was MY responsibility to REQUEST an estimate. Why wouldn't they offer an estimate to begin with when I mentioned I was on a budget? She didn't seem to care at all that I was concerned about mistreatment. I called back later to ask to speak to who was in charge, her name is Krista, and she was in a surgery and was supposed to call me back. She never did. I work 2 jobs and don't have days off and wasn't able to keep following up but I was never able to discuss my grievances. My dog had a follow up appointment to check on his ear infection so I figured I would just try in person since, clearly, no one was willing to call me back. I arrived this morning for his follow up and they told me that he didn't have an appointment (they cancelled it without my authorization, under again the assumption I wasn't coming back.. again with the communication here...) Dr. Portnoy came out and was trying to "smooth talk" me, telling me that there was no appointment, and I said he had it scheduled. They said they "reached out" to confirm and they sent it to an incorrect email address and then decided to cancel instead of calling after not hearing from me.. again... COMMUNICATION is HORRIBLE. I told her I just need his ears looked at quickly and asked if they're going to take me and she said "I don't have any appointments". I told her I had a really bad experience with lack of communication 4 weeks ago and that I'm not very happy and she continued to try to "sell" me on the reasons they gave him all those vaccines because "we feel these diseases are an every day threat in our environment" and I told her I didn't need to hear a spiel on vaccination and she said "well we don't have any appointments" and started walking away. By this point I was NOT very happy and I yelled "you all fucking suck at communication" and she turned around and said "I don't have time for this" and disappeared. I tried to call (because again you're curbside...) and they kept ignoring my calls. I tried over and over again, and they kept denying. A minute later and Krista (who I thought was a myth at this point) comes out yelling at me saying "You have to leave" and I asked, "who are you?" and she said "I run this place", so I firmly asked, "So, would you like to have a conversation with me?" and she said "No you swore at my staff". First of all, it doesn't matter if I swore.. you're a manager and should handle this appropriately. She refused to talk to me about the problem. I told her they were mistreating me and my dog and they wanted nothing to do with it. She threatened to call the cops on me if I didn't leave. REAL professional. First of all, you don't administer medications without permission. Second of all, you don't vaccinate patients who are actively fighting an infection. Third of all, if you make a mistake like this you make an effort to remedy the situation. Do yourself a favor and save yourself money and go somewhere else. read more

I cannot speak highly enough about Riverside Animal Hospital and particularly Dr. Portnoy and staff! I rescued my little Peanut in June and he came to me "down" and barely able to walk on his back legs. I was able to get him wobbling along but I knew he could do more if I got him the right help. I found Dr. Portnoy and she has this little guy walking on concrete and attempting to run on the grass. All thanks to her amazing acupuncture! The staff are friendly and know you and your pet by name. They care about you and want what's best for your pet. When you're outside waiting, it's often Dr. Portnoy who walks outside to greet you. We've been taking our dogs and cat here since 2015. We have gone to other vets in RI and they don't compare to the amazing care and attention our furbabies get at Riverside. Are they the cheapest? Probably not. Are they the most expensive? Definitely not. But it is more important to us that we take our guys to a clean facility with a caring and compassionate staff. Absolutely. 1000 percent. Our pets have had laser, acupuncture, checkups, nail trims, etc...and we have never had a bad experience. If you are the type of person who sees a random dog or cat and starts speaking crazy pet person language to them, then you will love this place. Dr. Portnoy has gone above and beyond for one of our terminally ill furbabies. She's consulted colleagues about his condition and contacted other vets in New England to find us the best care. We were 10 minutes late for our appointment and they would not see us. Our dog was in pain, they could have cared less. 10 minutes. I think it was a blessing in disguise after reviewing all of the bad reviews. Receptionist told us that was half of our appointment so needed to reschedule. So apparently we had 30 minutes for the vet to evaluate and perform acupuncture on our dog who has never been there before. Blessing in disguise. Thank you for not seeing us. So I paid for tests they charged me for but never shown me and said yes my cat has it then said it doesn't and when I asked about it they hung up on me ! . Fast forward I recently needed a vet and they were the only vet I was familiar but didn't trust but I called to get my dog an updated shot figured nothing can go wrong it's a routine shot. Avoid this place at all costs. The location and way they handle having their patents in is terrible. They treat you as if you and your dog are bringing in pests in to their oh so fabulous facility (which is terrible to be honest). Nicole Gilmore (registered vet) is completely rude and will try to force you into doing with your pet as she wishes. She believes her opinion is the only right one and will be extremely harsh and arrogant on you if you do not agree. Overall, as a first time dog owner, this place just gave me nightmares. Nicole Gilmore would call me and try to shove her opinions down my throat on how I should deal my dog's life, and would not stop going on and on about how my dog would die and have a miserable unhealthy life if I did not follow her "guidelines". I recently adopted a 4-month-old kitten from a no-kill shelter. After about three days, I noticed that the kitten's eye was red and gunky and that he was sneezing and wheezing. The shelter offered to pay for his treatment with their vet. However, they are located about 60 minutes from me so I thanked them but said I would bring Boo to my own veterinarian. Previously, I had come to Riverside Animal Hospital with my first cat, Lizzie, for her vaccinations and yearly check-up. Dr. Wright and the vet techs were so professional and friendly! I felt very well taken care of, so I was not at all concerned about bringing my new kitten, Boo, to see them. Unfortunately, however, Dr. Wright was not in and I was seen by Dr. Portnoy, the chief of staff, who immediately began the appointment in a manner that was neither professional, nor compassionate. She grabbed my kitten by the face and said, "does this cat look normal to you?" I was taken aback and thought maybe she was joking so I laughed and said, "yeah he has a little stink eye and we thought it was cute so-" but she interrupted me sternly and repeated her question until finally I was actually forced to answer, "I guess no..?" Without doing any tests or even looking in my cat's eyes, she made the diagnosis that he "probably has a tumor." Then, Dr. Portnoy went on to compare my kitten to a "lemon" and essentially berated the shelter for adopting him out and demeaned me for adopting him. She qualified this by saying, "I guess there are some people out there who like to adopt those dogs with three legs or cats with one eye..." She spoke with a condescending tone as if anyone who adopts a less-than-show-worthy pet is a moron. Finally, when I said (through tears, at this point) that I was keeping him and could she just prescribe me the antibiotics because he was clearly in a state of discomfort, she told me to go back to the shelter if I wanted medicine. To add insult to injury, I then had to pay $41 for this "office visit"!! If you don't mind the "tells-it-like-it-is" personality than perhaps this is the vet for you. However, if you are looking for a veterinarian who is mindful to both their client and their client's pets, look elsewhere. I know I will be looking for a new vet! read more

I can't say enough good things about RAH. Dr Portnoy is fantastic. She AlWAYS gives personal care to my dog, both face to face and with multiple follow up calls to check on her. She never seems bothered by questions or just my general helicopter dog-mom attitude. My dog is like my child so to have her cared for with the same love and respect we show her at home is invaluable. Everyone there gives Lexi kisses and loves just like she gets at home which makes her overall experience of going to the vet muchmore tolerable and even enjoyable for her to see her vet and vet tech friends. AVOID THIS FACILITY!!!! They called me 1 hour prior to my appointment with my new puppy to tell me I was not allowed on their premises because I had previously tested positive for covid. The rude receptionist inquired if I had a negative test. I explained to her the CDC guidelines which state a person can test positive for up to 3 months after a positive test, so no....I did not get re-tested. However, I am no longer in quarantine (haven't been for over a week). She then stated it was "protocol". I asked if my significant other could take the dog and was again informed they "don't see animals that are in a household with someone that had COVID". Are they really that brainless to believe during the past year, they haven't seen an animal that was in a household with someone that had COVID? Another thing, so why when I originally re-scheduled this appointment (which I mentioned I was re-scheduling the February appointment because I tested positive) did they re-schedule the appointment?????? I am being discriminated against because of a prior illness and the State will be notified of this unfair practice. We adopted 2 cats after our cat and dog passed away a year apart from each other. It wasn't something we planned but they were out in the cold and being neglected - it was also a bad winter. This was the vet the previous owner took them to, and even though it was 20-30 min away for us we kept going there figuring that would be best for the cats. Right off I realized they were higher priced than others we have gone to and don't do any complimentary services, such as nail trimming. We found out yesterday that one has hyperthyroid and needs meds. We called ahead of time and asked about a human grade version, because we have the Walgreens Rx plan and it saves a ton of money on pet meds. They said there wasn't a human grade. $67 later, I learn that there is a human grade, it would have been $6 and even the same med is online for $27. I called, they apologized - but that doesn't cut it with me, $40 more than online for the exact same thing and $61 more than a generic version for anyone is a lot. the people are nice, the facility is clean and the appointments are ontime. Those are the pluses, but I feel, like my past vets, if you can save some $ for your clients then do so. It just seems like the right thing to do. And I'm angry. Loosing a "lifetime of our pets" client to nickel and dime folks is a shame. I already set up a new vet closer to home and I will be going there with my "kids" from now on. read more

It was a hectic day for me with my furbabies and human babies, the staff helped me getting the stroller inside, then gave my older child a coloring book and crayons (even busted out stickers). I went to Riverside Animal Hospital when my cat started throwing up frequently for several days. By the time I took her to Riverside, I was quite panicked and upset. However, every single person at Riverside was extremely friendly and empathetic. It was a Saturday, and they were very busy, but they squeezed us in, even though we had never been there before. We ended up having x-rays done. The vet told me up front how much they would cost and didn't push for any unnecessary tests. This was my only experience with this vet, but when it's time for a checkup, I will be taking my cat to Riverside, and I would definitely recommend them to a friend! read more

This is a small veterinarian's office, so the word "hospital" in the name is a misnomer. My cat got good enough treatment here. I can't be enthusiastic, however, because their fees are over the top. Vets used to be affordable, but now I pay more to the vet than I pay to my own doctor. Unfortunately, my darling cat had to be put to sleep (that 10-minute procedure cost $82.50 all by itself). Now I plan to go pet-less just so I can avoid being ripped off by vets. read more

All of them have welcomed me and the animals I have brought to them which they attend to with wonderful care and compassion. I also bring my own animals to them for treatment and again feel they receive excellent care. We recently had one of my cats become very sick. I've been taking my beautiful rescue pit there for over two years. Dr. Anna Portnoy is my go to doc, I don't know much about the other doctor but when I get a good one I tend to stay with the same person. Everybody there are really friendly. The facility is clean and the best part is that they have one room with a door that goes outside which for me since my dog is not a fan (tolerant) of other animals I go through that door. Through that door is the main parking lot. Sometimes the parking lot looks full but it's ok to park on the grass. I haven't used the other services but if I needed to this would be the place. read more

Not very good at all...I have 2 dogs and ever since I started taking them.there ,both dogs health had depleted numerous visits for the same.symptoms and no answers with no results ..kept having to go back and fourth and now my dogs have some king of infectious skin.problem which they didn't have until.i started to take them.there...the rooms are not cleaned ,fur.all in them ,floors are very dirty,they don't have any place to tie ur dogs up.so when paying u have to hold on to tjem.and hope it's easy,nothing to clean up a dogs poop or.pee if they happen to do so ,not organized ,not clean,treatment is horrible,very expensive,and hope that u don't get the fill in doctor cause she is just a moron and called my very lean ,good shape.bluenose fat ...so far from.fat...lol...place is a joke ...keep your dogs away from.them ot whatever other animal you have read more

My dog was being irritated by a sebaceous cyst and needed to see a vet. We moved to Barrington last year and adopted the dog 4 months ago. Our first vet experience in the area had not gone well and we decided to look for another facility. From the moment we drove up to the Riverside Animal Hospital, we knew that this was going to be a friendly experience. The property is set back from the main road and the building is brightly painted and quite inviting. When we walked into the lobby, the front desk attendant immediately came around, crouched down and greeting Tove. She was genuinely interested in her well-being. After setting up the examining room adjacent to the reception, She took down all the pertinent information about Tove and her condition. Less than 1 minute after being escorted into the examining room, Dr Wright entered and also immediately greeted Tove with kindness and affection. She asked about what I perceived to be her condition, kindly checked he vitals and then proceeded to examine the area on her hip that was of concern. Dr. Wright validated it was a cyst and asked if she could take Tove to another room where they would shave and treat the affected spot. When she returned, she confirmed that the cyst was empty but that I should keep watch to ensure it didn't reoccur. Throughout the process she was upbeat, informative and very attentive to my Dog's presence. This is our new veterinary hospital and we couldn't be happier! read more
