Norm helped me for several months look for duplexes that fit the bill in Riverwest, Eastside, and Bayview. We first chatted for a while to get an idea of what I was looking for and the budget - he is very easy to talk to. After we got that, he set me up with an MLS automatic listing so I would be emailed the detailed info (way more detailed than Zillow or Trulia) about various places that include pictures, taxes, etc. I would email or call him on what places I would like to see and right away he would have a schedule of places we would see in a day or two. Norm always picks up the phone no matter what day it is or the time and is always willing to talk to you about whatever it may be. He used to be (may still be) an Inspector so when it came to walking through duplexes he knew what areas were big concerns and what were small issues. He could even roughly estimate how much or at least point you in the direction of an expert to get an estimate. Norm also performs Energy Audits so he will know how energy efficient various appliances and the house are. He is very patient as it took around 5 months of seeing places with my girlfriend and brother to finally find the right place. When the time came to make the offer, he drafted up the paperwork right away. He is very detailed on all of his paperwork and it made closing way easier. We went through with some offers and got an accepted offer. He was able to provide several inspectors to get when it came to that point after the accepted offer. Overall, Norm is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to single and multi-family units throughout Milwaukee, knows how to spot issues in places, and is very friendly and responsive on both the calls and emails. The elevator has been out of service once a month, and repairs take 2-3 weeks. My clothes got stained when using the laundry machines on the first floor. I have complained about that, but the landlord told me that there had been no complaints about the washing machine in the past few years, and the machines had not been cleaned. Out of the six dryers, only 2 of them work. The heating system didn't work twice during the winter, leaving the apartment at 50 degrees for several days each time. My package got stolen twice at this apartment. Homeless people kept staying on the first floor during the winter. The landlord never notified tenants in advance about these issues. They only responded after the tenants complained about those. They didn't priorly notice or apology regarding repairs. I told the landlord that I would pay 1 year of rent upfront instead of a double deposit as an international student. But the total amount provided to me didn't include the prorated period and the deposit, the annual rent was even miscalculated, and they still took a double deposit. Now they are telling me to pay additional rent without any notice. I wouldn't have known about this additional rent if I hadn't received a 5 day notice since some of the amount I already paid was misapplied a few days ago.

At the time I was looking, I checked out all other three bedrooms in the area and all were at least $200 more per month, had less square footage and were in a worse location. Therefore I feel Bieck's prices are very reasonable. Also, since I have lived here my rent has not changed despite that I know they upped the rent by $50 a month for new tenets. It makes me feel appreciated by my management company, $50 a month appreciated. I agree with the complaint of the above reviewer: that Bieck's issue is their managers are not as well trained or responsive as they ought to be--at least not in my building. But this is not necessarily a bad thing. Think of it this way, the only thing better than a roommate you like, is a roommate who is never around. Our manager, though generally a nice guy, is also a bit intimidating and so we don't really bother him and he doesn't bother us. I realized that this could cause potential problems, especially because I am in an incredibly old building and things do fall apart (especially because no else who is in this building seems to care about fixing anything, but such is the curse of living near a campus). Once I realized how difficult (and uncomfortable) it was to contact my manager, I began calling the Management company directly. I have always had wonderful, friendly and prompt service dealing directly with Bieck. I've even spoken with Lida Bieck, the head of the company, before and she (as everyone else in her office) were all very friendly and helpful.
