A few Sundays ago, I had a flight leaving Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) at 5:45 am. My flight the previous evening was cancelled. I was thankful to be put on the next flight out of MSP, with a stopover in Chicago. I frankly wouldn't choose this time of day to fly out. First, being at the airport at 3:30 am for a domestic flight isn't great. Most folks don't function well at this hour if they hold a day job. Second, all Caribou Coffee joints at MSP aren't open. They claim to be open at 4 am, but staff were smart to not go for that start time. I walked around concourse E. There were only two places open. The other place had a longer lineup. I went with Roasting Plant Coffee instead. If you know me well, you are probably wondering why a tea drinker would be at a coffee joint. It wasn't for coffee, although iced coffee on the menu did cross my mind. I needed a bite to eat and something to wash it down with. This place does have hot chocolate, tea, iced tea, and smoothies, which made me happy. Instead, I saw a bottle of Diet Pepsi. Why not have that for breakfast? I frankly felt like something fizzy. Since I couldn't get my favourite sparkling drink from Caribou Coffee, pop seemed perfect. There were maybe eight people in front of me. Some customers took their time to rattle off their specialty drink of choice with at least six words in the drink's name. I didn't mind it. It allowed me to look at the baked goods and figure out what I wanted. The lone man handling customers and the entire operation was extremely friendly and perky at this hour. He was refreshing to talk to. The caffeine is effective here! I had already grabbed a bottle of Diet Pepsi and placed it on the counter. I looked at the baked goods in the display. The blueberry cobbler muffin caught my attention. I like blueberries. I hadn't had a muffin in eons. Let's do it! I paid with a credit card. I tapped and all was great. He placed my muffin in a bag. I thanked him and walked out of the cafe. There was seating in this cafe. I don't know why no one wanted to sit there. I decided to sit near my gate on this concourse. There's a reason why I don't do muffins often. They are loaded with sugar. This one had a ton of sugar on top that was highly unnecessary. I actually took the sugar off, which made the Korean woman, who was sitting two seats to my left, shaking her leg vigorously as if she wanted to create a woman-made earthquake, look at me funny. I looked at her and then her shaking leg. She stopped staring. Her leg also stopped shaking and baking. I continued to remove the sugar. Taking sugar off the top of a muffin isn't as crazy as trying to make the earth move at an airport. The muffin was fluffy. There were plenty of blueberries mixed in. I loved the fruit. This muffin tasted much better with half the sugar removed from it. My Diet Pepsi hit the spot. Cold. Refreshing. Caffeinated. I recommend pop in the morning when you are running on three hours of sleep. It got me through my two flights home. The fizziness brought me joy. This coffee joint was a nice find. I'm thankful that it was open so early. The man running the joint was wonderful. Caffeine is everyone's friend here. (33) read more

I work at the airport and I love this coffee. It's a bit on the pricier side ($8-9) for a vanilla latte. It has an experience of watching the beans travel overhead in a see through tube for grinding and roasting. My male barista was so friendly and quick in making my drink especially since he was the only one working. read more

Based on the reviews and what I read online elsewhere, I was expecting a little more from this spot. I thought it would be a more interactive experience - getting to choose your beans and roast, etc. My expectations were a little high. I ordered an iced latte and Nate got a cup of supercharged coffee that said it had 30% extra beans or something like that. We weren't asked what type of beans we wanted and the employee just got our drinks quickly. The iced latte was mostly a bunch of milk mixed with some espresso - definitely not what I'm used to when ordering a latte. Nate's coffee was pretty good, we actually ended up mixing the two together to make a little more balanced "latte." Prices were definitely high - for the two drinks I paid $14 so I expected something a little better. I'd probably just opt for Starbucks or Caribou Coffee in the future. read more

I have never seen someone care less about their job in my entire life, and that is saying something. The woman looked up lazily from her phone a good minute after I showed up to the counter, and when ordered she took a long time to get my espresso. She seemed annoyed when I asked to see the flavor profiles of the different brand they offered, and I paid $7 for something that had no crema (aka old coffee) and tasted more like slightly bitter and flavorless coffee than espresso. I know airports are notorious for expensive food/drink, but this is just ridiculous. In most cities, you can pay literally half this much or even less for quality espresso. Love the concept (a variety of beans to choose from depending on your preference for more fruity/floral light roasts or more chocolatey/nutty medium dark roasts) but hate the execution. Worst customer service and terrible quality product for an absurd price. Will never return. read more

Coolest coffee place I've ever seen! Super cool roasting system that delivers the coffee beans fresh and whole to the espresso machine. It then grinds beans right into machine making ever cup of coffee fresh and smooth. The selection is great! They have 5-6 coffee beans to choose from and they all seems great. We chose Jamaican blend, and it was amazing! Dean the shop owner is so nice and incredibly knowledgeable and his customer service is outstanding. He explained the system and could just see the passion he has for coffee. What a great guy. Hope they open one in San Diego soon. read more

This location is post-security on Concourse E of MSP. They have this cool system of tubes and pipes that transport whole coffee beans from a storage container, over to the machine to grind them and then make your drink. I think the system shoots the beans through these clear tubes using compressed air. I ordered their version of a cold brew - more like an iced coffee as it was not pre-chilled. I asked for extra ice to make sure the drink was cold and delicious. It was a tad on the weak side - most likely due to pouring hot coffee over ice - hence the 4 stars as opposed to 5 stars. I wanted to love this place... I've been roasting coffee at home for about 6 months, so this place really piqued my interest. The roasting, and dispensing is all automatic; greens are cylindrical clear bins on one side, tubes and diverted hub above routes the beans via airflow to the roasting chamber, after roasting the chaff is pulled to a separate bin and the freshly roasted beans are delivered to the holding bins opposite the greens. Here's the really cool part, when you order, the beans for your coffee selection are pulled via the tubes into the grinder/roaster automatically. Cool concept. However, the service was terrible, customer service was absent. The single person behind the counter didn't speak English. Orders ahead of me were wrong, my order was repeated back to me incorrectly 3 times. It took about 9 minutes for me to get to the counter with only 2 people ahead of me (and there was line behind me of about 8 people, feel sorry for that last person). The espresso itself was mediocre. Not sure the grind was dialed in for the automatic machine. They have a lot of potential but fell very short. read more

I went into The Roasting Plant because it was near my gate and I like supporting local rather than big chains. The music was cool. The server seemed annoyed or depressed. I ordered 4 shots: 2 caf, 2 decaf, add water and oat milk, "an Americano...just not sure how many shots you usually put in that." They rang it up, I paid $8.xx! And I added a 20% tip and asked how their day was going because I can imagine it could be a drag working early at the airport. They said, "Oh, fine..." not making eye contact. Then said, "stand back and wait." So I did. They handed me four shots. I said, "Can you add water and oat milk please?" They said, annoyed, "Why didn't you just order an Americano?" And I said, "I basically did.(in hindsight I should've just said Americano and then the thing about the shots and oatmilk...But ADHD and uncaffeinated early mornings... I just wanted to be sure there were four shots, two of them decaf.) They said, "NO, you didn't, you just ordered four shots." Now, like I said, it seemed like they were depressed or annoyed, possibly not wholly listening. I have a mask on...maybe they didn't hear me, or were distracted...it's all good...but why be so rude? They muttered under their breath as they got the oat milk and poured it and then added not-boiling lukewarm water, spilling it. I said, "Thanks so much!" all cheery and walked out of the store. As I walked out, they let out a huge, loud, exasperated sigh, so I did too...cuz that's BS! And then they said, "Get the f*c out of my store!" Who needs that kind of abusive treatment? Not me! NOT recommended! I'm a therapist. I've worked in the service industry. I'm patient and kind and understanding about bad days. Maybe their boss is a jerk, if they are not the owner they are probably underpaid. Maybe it's their joint and it's not doing well. I dunno...but don't take it out on the customer. I didn't deserve that kind of treatment. Nobody does. I just wanted to support a local business and get a cup of coffee. read more

Creative concept for a coffee stop that's apparently a national chain. the Roasting Plant is great for bona fide coffee lovers who want a selection of hard to source, fresh ground beans from some of the most exclusive coffee spots in the world. I loved picking out Jamaican blue mountain beans from the center display tubes and watching it shoot up the vacuum to be fresh ground and brewed on the spot, just for me. Process was swift, just as fast or faster than Starbucks. My small cup of couture coffee was $4.54, steep but fair. It had a beautiful crema and was piping hot, delicious, and worth the price tag for a Pre-takeoff pick me up. Condiment station was messy when I arrived, but there was only one barista staffing the shop, and business was steady during the 20 min I was here. He quickly refilled the half and half for me, despite having a line, and then tidied the station when the line was gone. Definitely check out the Roasting Spot for a fresh cup or a special bag of beans for your hosts or your loved ones- they will be thoroughly impressed! read more

When you place an order you can watch and hear the roasted beans go flying in the air to the baristas machine to be ground and heated into your perfect cup of coffee. Coffee not your thing? They have a nice tea selection to choose from as well. They also have other typical airport fair by way of overpriced snack food. This means your coffee of choice is always made from fresh ground beans and you get to see them transported overhead like some sort of bean transporter of the future. I opted for the Jamaica Blue which was one of their micro batches but I thought why not indulge? The triple came out in a 16oz cup when I'd been expecting 12oz - the menus are a bit misleading since they have their SML offerings right above the double, triple, quad offerings so I'd equated the triple to the Medium which was 12oz.....my bad! WORST EVER. DO NOT GO HERE!!! I ordered a small nonfat decaf cappuccino. I didn't see her get the espresso going but I saw her pour 2% milk. I called her out on it and she went to the fridge and poured something else and I can only hope she poured the right thing. She seemed like she wasn't entirely mentally there. Oh yeah. This was the second drink she made for me because the first one was a latte even though I said cappuccino and she rang up a cappuccino. So glad they got a better coffee option on the E concourse - I'm not at all sad to see the Caribou gone and am mostly unimpressed with Angel Food's coffee offerings. This is a concept I've never seen before and, even after experiencing it, I'm not sure exactly how it works. Apparently, when you order, coffee is sucked up from the unroasted, unground bean pods in the middle of the room right into one of the machines where it is freshly roasted and brewed just for you. Now, since the coffee place didn't smell like a roastery - cloying and heavy yet delicious coffee smoke - I can't say how real that whole process is. However, I CAN say it was one of the best mochas I've had. It definitely tasted fresh and their espresso roast was delicious. It wasn't overly sweet or milky, either. Perfect. I paid $6 here today to be talked down to by an employee who didn't know what they were doing and have a mediocre latte. It doesn't matter how fancy your beans are if your employees haven't been properly trained. I ordered an iced latte. The gentleman at the counter proceeded to make the espresso, then heat up milk. I said- oh, I wanted that iced. I then got an incredulous lecture on how it had to be "foamed" milk in my iced latte. I asked the guy to use cold milk. He was indignant and said "I've never made a latte with just cold milk before". The thought of putting cold milk over ice blew this guy's mind. Does it make sense to heat milk to 180 degrees then put it over ice? Just logically? There's another review on here of a guy with a watered down iced latte. I'll bet $100 the same guy made it. The whole time I was treated like I was an idiot for wanting cold milk for my iced latte. Even if I was wrong (and I'm not)- when I asked for cold milk, why not just do it? Why act like I'm an idiot who doesn't understand what I want? Bizarre experience and mediocre coffee. Management- please, please, please educate your employees on coffee and courtesy! read more

The Roasting Plant is a unique experience, for sure. Between the pneumatic coffee delivery system and the high quality coffee, this is a great destination within the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. My only caveat is that I've had better tasting hot chocolate at a football tailgate than here. Don't waste your money. read more

It's an interesting concept and I had time to kill so I hiked over from the C concourse... it was an interesting field trip.
