Knowing little to nothing about the entire home-buying process, my fiancée and I figured we ought to reach out to an agent to help out once we were ready to start looking at houses seriously. We had heard some good things from a friend of ours about Portland's Alternative Realtors, and wrote them through the contact form on their website. Robbie got in touch the same day, and set up an appointment for that following Saturday to check out some listings and go over what we were looking for. My fiancee and I both work all day Monday through Friday so it was great to meet someone who was available on evenings and weekends. Being that this was our first time buying a house, we had a bajillion questions. Robbie clearly and happily answered ALL of them. TWICE. Robbie is AWESOME. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable, funny and was really a pleasure to work with. He knows his stuff about what to look for in a house, and provided a lot of insight in pointing out some potential concerns with houses we looked at. We were looking at a pretty small pocket of the inner SE, and Robbie was great at working within our super picky criteria and sent us listings anytime possible houses of interest popped up on the market. I had a somewhat negative preconceived notion that realtors may try to constantly upsell and rush you into making a decision at every corner, but that was exactly the opposite case working with Robbie. He knows what's up. After learning what kind of people we are, and what kind of house we were looking for, at no time did he ever try to sell us on something else, or push us in a particular direction. Ultimately, we ended up in a RAD house, EXACTLY where we were looking, in the price range we were working within. And Robbie helped negotiate back and forth until we were satisfied with the conditions of the sale. I really feel like he went to bat for us, and knocked it out of the park (obligatory baseball metaphor). Without boring you with the details, let me just say that I'd recommend Robbie to ANYONE looking for a cool house in Portland. Robbie was excellent. I recommend him to anyone I hear is thinking about buying a house. He is very flexible and really listens to what you are looking for. He does a great job of weighing what you want with the realities of the market. He was very professional and his familiarity with the Portland Metro area was obvious. Without making this sound like a personal ad, I'd say Robbie is smart, funny, and a source of calm when you need it the most. He also entertained our 9-month-old while we walked around and when we signed our closing documents. After talking to my friends about their realtors, I've discovered this is not the norm. He was recommended to us by a friend (who took 8 -eight- years to find his dream home!) and helped us with the purchase of a home in North Portland and the sale of a condo in NW Portland. He is incredibly organized and on the ball. He forwarded us listings within minutes (even while on vacation!) and was available to look at houses at all times of the day. He is very professional and is a great listener. On the first home we made an offer on he arranged the inspection, contractor, electrician, chimney inspector, sewer scope and radon within a day. We found a home that we liked better and he rolled with the withdrawal and new offer without a blink. The sale of my condo in NW was fast! Rather than accepting the first (cash) offer he recommended that we wait to review offers until the end of the day. We had six offers and he showed up with a spread sheet of the different pros and cons of each. He gave us excellent advice at key points in both the purchase and sale process that resulted in great financial gain and two happy homeowners. Hire Robbie. He sold our house in August, which he found for us 7 years prior. In the space between, he responded to all of our referrals and helped many of our friends buy their first homes, too. Robbie makes this process as easy as it can be, in part because he is lighthearted with a great sense of humor. He takes the edge off what can be an opaque, overwhelming task. He knows the Portland metro market inside and out--you'd be hard-pressed to find a more knowledgeable, experienced realtor. He is well-connected and respected in the realty community, which is super helpful. Also, Robbie loves and respects his city and its people. Robbie goes above and beyond, e.g. showing up at 9pm to install new CO2 detectors for the next day's inspection. If he ever sweats a part of the process, you won't know it. He works his ass off, but he's easygoing and unflappable. He makes good jokes to dry your (inevitable) tears of frustration. He takes excellent care of his clients and loves his job. The buying and selling processes were not easy for us. Especially in the selling phase, our circumstances were anomalous. I am pretty sure we wouldn't have managed such positive outcomes without Robbie's magic. All this to say: Robbie isn't your average realtor, folks.
