I had a weird problem at work a while back. My boss's boss called me (he's usually a cool guy). My direct boss above me boss is a sorry piece of crap. F that guy. Everyone else in the company is good. Boss's boss yells at me on the phone about needing access to an electronics control cabinet. "Make me 10 copies of that key!" I was tempted to tell him that it's real easy to pick that lock. I keep my mouth shut as to not look like a criminal. It's a thin, short key. Ace Hardware can't do it. "Too small. Tricky." Home Depot can't do it. An older, wiser employee explains to me that the modern machines cannot accurately cut such a key. I go back to my truck super stressed. The clock is ticking. I Google locksmith businesses in the area. The first several don't have a brick and mortar store. They all drive around town in trucks. I find Robbie's Lock & Key (an actual storefront) just 4 miles away. A really nice, intelligent guy answered the phone. I make a B-line to their shop. A solid, professional gentleman greets me at the counter. I show him the key. He says it will be tricky, but he will try. Old school machines (maybe 50 years old). Hell yeah! My kind of shop!!!! He cuts and grinds a new copy, smiles, "yeah, this will work. How many you need?" "Sir, I need 10. My boss wants 10 copies. Make that 20. 20 keys please sir." All 20 key copies were perfect. I got back to the office (everyone was gone). I piled the new 20 keys on el jefe's desk like the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit looking at his vast gold treasure. On a post-it note I wrote, "Here you go a$$hole. Shut the fvck up b----". I thought better of it and grabbed the note and put it in my pocket. read more

I needed a new fob recently. I asked around and folks I know told me about Robbie's Key and Lock Shop on Long Point. I drove over there and talked with Jeff and Adam, then met the owner, David. I heard the story of how Robbie started the business in 1953 and had it until 1987. David and some others bought the business and kept running it. David eventually became the sole owner. I told him then that was an amazing story. When a new owner can come on board and keep a good business running (from 1987 until 2025, and still going strong), that means the new owner has done things right. Who knew it would be so freakin' difficult finding a locksmith that can make a funky-assed key for my house. Lots of research, driving, research finding this place. Holding my breath, I took a drive over & there it was a stand alone building with a big sign out front. I quickly pulled in before it could disappear & walked in. The store itself is very clean & orderly. There's a wall with a gajillion keys. They sell safes & a nice selection of locks. I was immediately greeted by an older gentleman. I requested a couple copies & with in a few minutes I was a very happy camper. This place laid its roots over 50 years ago. I'm sure the neighborhood has changed dramatically during this time but this store has been happily sitting there providing locksmith services to the surrounding area. I can understand why! My first impression of Robbie's Key & Lock Shop was not a good one. I was calling around to different locksmiths to get estimates for a service call. When I got around to Robbie's, the demeaner of the guy who answered the phone was bad. It was like I called him in the middle of the night to shoot the bull. If it was not for the fact that their quote was lower than the other locksmiths I called, I would have gone with another company. The technician made up for the phone call. I was expecting to have to replace the lock, but he was able to repair the lock, thus lowering the cost. I've known this place since I was a kid in the 70's. I moved back to the area six years ago and was pleasantly surprised to see that it's still around though it has taken over the Dunkin Donuts shop that I used to visit on the weekends, after my late shift at Jack in the Box. I go to Robbie's even when it's out of my way. I appreciate the personal services and expertise. I had a problem with one of my Baldwin locks one time and the man went to the back and found a part that he just happened to have. He didn't charge anything for it. You can go to Lowe's and stick your key in a machine and hope that the copy that you get works or you can go to Robbie's, talk to a real person, and get a copy that will work the first time. These small businesses that have years of knowledge and charms, are getting harder and harder to find. read more

Robbie's has been Spring Branch fixture since at least the '50s, and for good reason: expertise, great customer service, reliability. I've come here over the years with various issues: an old steamer trunk that was locked, but I had no key. They made a new key. Fussy locks on old houses that wouldn't work, and I had no keys. They just know their business. Yes, if you get a key made there, they're more expensive than, say, those make-it-yourself booths at Home Depot, but they're made right. You won't need to come back. Right now, they have an interesting old stand-alone safe they've refurbished and is for sale. read more
