Yes, "Playa Bowls" translates directly to "Beach Bowls" because playa is the Spanish word for beach. I came with some spin class gals and what a treat. I ordered The Pura Vida bowl (base of signature açaí topped with blueberry flax granola, fresh strawberries, blueberries, and a drizzle of honey). It was everything I wanted after spin class to cool off and get some good nutrition. Eat your colors, y'all! Playa Bowls started in 2014 as a small sidewalk cart in Belmar, New Jersey, founded by surfers Abby Taylor and Rob Giuliani. With over 400 shops operating across more than 30 states, you can only assume why this place is so well-loved.

Coconut flakes and chia seeds gave everything more texture, and the almond butter made the whole bowl richer and more substantial. There is a lot happening in one bowl but somehow the banana still gets to be the main star. Fun banana fact: botanically, bananas are actually berries. The shop itself is really fun, with a bright, beachy vibe that makes a bowl of blended fruit feel vaguely like you are doing something tropical instead of just hiding from the Arizona heat. Four stars from me. The Olas was refreshing, filling, and a nice change from the usual açaí bowl. If you are a fellow banana enthusiast, this is probably the bowl I would point you toward. I have gotten the PB Butterscotch smoothie both times I have gone, and it is delicious. It tastes just like a regular milkshake, but without the guilt.
