My family recently lost a family member. Shure Funeral Home was who we chose to help us plan, provide and carry out all the necessary services to assist us in burying our loved one. We couldn't have chosen a better company to carry out our wishes. From the beginning (an out of state coordination) to the very end of the funeral service, every need was met with Kindness and professionalism. Jimmy and John were very good before the fees were paid. We asked if the grave side service would be recorded, we were told that it would be available for the out of town relatives on a Zoom format and on a thumb drive. As it turned out the first 60 seconds were recorded, then the screen went black. John informed us that the recording company still had the Zoom video and it was still intact at a cloud platform. We called several times but eventually was told the Zoom in fact was not going to be available. We believe that personnel at Shure Funeral Home made the error at the time of the recording of the video. The family is devastated that this sensitive moment in the life of a family has not been preserved. read more

PICK ANOTHER FUNERAL HOME!!!!!!!!! I wish i could give this place a ZERO. My grandfather passed away and my family arranged the funeral with this funeral home. I called to see the procedure for a military service. He told me I was asking too close to the date but if i wanted to try I could drive down the discharge papers and possibly they could try. I started to ask " do you think its worth driving all the way down there if its too late?" (I was 3 hours away) I only got to "do you think its wor...." and he cut me off and started to yell (yes i mean yell) at me about how busy he was and that he had to tend to another family. Now, Im a super sweet person so I said "very sorry, i understand, i was just asking if...." he cut me off again and said (verbatim) NO I CANNOT DISCUSS THIS RIGHT NOW! I AM WITH ANOTHER FAMILY, I CANT HELP YOU WITH THIS, YOU ARE BOTHERING ME AND I AM BUSY WITH SOMEONE ELSE!!" then he hung up the phone on me. My grandfather's funeral was the next day and this is the way to treat his family on the phone? I felt like I was in a bad movie or something. I wasn't being a pain in the ass or anything. I didn't even get to ask a second question and he was literally screaming at me on the phone. I thought funeral homes should be (or at least pretend to be) understanding and kind to people who are grieving. read more

The firm handled the arrangements including transportation of the body from out of state. We had done some per planning and unthinking hat helped immensely. Bottom line, Jimmy and his staff were readily available to me to answer questions and clarify arrangements. I felt low stress and given the circumstances of a parents death, no additional stress is necessary . Area for improvement is the website. I think directions to area cemeteries could be included as well as more detailed obituaries and hyperlinks to charities selected by the deceased. read more

Robert E. Shure Funeral Home provided funeral services for my Uncle Howard last week. I would say that their service itself was fine. However I would suggest that you might want to check prices at other funeral homes before retaining their services. In addition to expected charges for everything from the casket (which at $750, which was discounted from $900 since my Uncle had been a Mason, seemed pretty expensive for a plain unlined pine box) to transfer of the deceased in a vehicle, there is a charge which all funeral homes have called "Basic Personnel and Professional Services." This charge, from what I understand, is non-negotiable and mandatory and covers the funeral home's overhead in general and not specific charges for your own funeral needs. The charge was $3900 from Shure. They told me that this was a very typical amount for funeral homes in the New Haven area, but I am not convinced of this, though to be honest, I did not check with other funeral homes. It just seems that a most basic funeral with graveside service should cost less than $8440 (which does not include the price of the grave opening or the rabbi, which brought the price to over $10,000. My 70 year old brother was the person who arranged with Shure for the funeral and he told me later that he felt somewhat taken advantage of in terms of the price of the services (my uncle had no savings and my brother and I will be sharing the cost of the funeral). I do understand that when a loved one dies that it's pretty difficult to price shop, but I am suggesting you might want to do so. read more

I'm not here to rate this funeral home. I will leave that to the immediate family. We are best friends of the family and had to drive 2 hours so we got there early and had time to get ready. We were able to create our own direction because the address of the funeral home was provided. This service, however, was at the Beth Israel Cemetery in Orange. The website provided a list of about 40 cemeteries and 2 of them were listed as Beth Israel, neither being in Orange. I settled for just getting to the funeral home and following the procession to the cemetery. To our surprise there was no one there when the hour arose, and we were now late for this very important time to provide support for our friends. We phoned the funeral home and it took the operator 15 minutes to finally discover the street address to the cemetery. She could not provide directions and we were on our own. We headed west out of New Haven knowing the town of orange was west and asked a bystander at a grocery store. He got us back on the highway down 2 more exits where we asked a home owner for further directions. We drove past the entrance to the cemetery due to a large white van blocking it. We thought this might be a back entrance, but had to return to this entrance which was now free. We entered the back of the procession, but it was too late and the service was over. I do not understand why a funeral home who makes so much money does not adequately provide their mourners proper direction and listings of locations. Upon further review, we discovered that the Beth Israel cemetery is listed under the name "Congregation Beth Israel". When you list that many cemeteries it is crucial to know how to properly catalogue your cemeteries, which in the case would be "Beth Israel (Congregation)". You only get one chance to be with loved ones at their time of mourning, and the information given by this provider was terribly inadequate and left us scrambling for addresses and directions. read more

While I wish I hadn't gotten to know this business quite so soon, I can say that they twice made an incredibly horrid experience slightly more bearable, and that I really appreciate what they've done for my family. My father had insisted upon Shure decades ago, and my mother began the pre-payment of their arrangements some time back. When my mom became terminally ill, I contacted Shure per her request to (1) get in contact with the cemetery to schedule a time for the miserable chore of choosing my parents' final resting places and (2) ask if her pre-payment included my being able to touch base with them as needed. I was told Of Course, and they were as good as their word. My mother had the funeral whose arrangements she asked me to finalize, and I think that Shure carried out her every wish. I'm not an expert of funerals; this isn't "Harold and Maude." I know that I told them her dying wishes, and that they made sure that they granted everything that they could. I know that they helped me with her obituary since I had never had to write one (and which she HAD written, but the pre-Hospice nursing home had misplaced her papers). I know that they gently explained to me any rituals I didn't know and/or couldn't find on Google. (I'd expected my dad, my mom's senior, to go first, and that my mom would be here to help me.) They gave me several books on the Jewish ways of mourning. They recommended a Rabbi who was so perfect that I, non-observant, go to his shul every week to say Kaddish as my mom asked. They were physically present, but in the background, at the funeral so that they could be by our sides in a heartbeat. They came to my family at every stage of the funeral to let us know what would be next and to tell us that it was absolutely fine if we needed to leave if we couldn't bear it. Two hundred and eighty-three days later, I got the phone call that we'd suddenly, though not unexpectedly, lost my dad. I'd walked out of my office and started driving to Shure even before I called Jimmy, and he met me right away. He gave me several hours to talk and cry as we finalized my father's details. The crummy nursing home where he lived and died had screwed up my dad's paperwork (read: there were almost formal repercussions) and Jimmy took care of it; they fixed their heinous error and hand-delivered the paperwork to Shure. My dad, a Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, never asked me to get him an American flag, but I know my dad and knew that he would be pleased. The funeral was to be the next day. I had a flag for my daddy. (They presented it to my brother at the funeral.) They also told me - and I'm sure it's standard but how would I have known - about the simple process of obtaining a military foot stone for my father. We'd lost my dad's Honorable Discharge papers in Hurricane Sandy, but as Next of Kin I had no problem ordering them from the National Personnel Records documentation facility.) My mother is very pious and had requested formalities. Shure not only took care of that; but they also worked with my dad's wishes, which were far less religious (though both of our parents were buried Orthodox). I know that my mom would have been shocked at the idea, AND that my dad would have LOVED the idea, of my taking a picture of the flag on his casket. I wasn't sure of the rules, but they encouraged me to do what he wanted. This comparison may be in poor taste, but they treated me like a bride. These were my parents' days, but they gave me whatever I wanted. (I didn't take advantage of this, and kept everything About Them and didn't make it About Me.) Everyone at Shure treated me as though I had a million bucks to spend in there, and not as though we were sending my parents on the modest budgets they wanted. Shure made me feel valued without making me feel like a dollar sign. Jimmy even called the following day to see how I was holding up. After both funerals, I wrote thank you cards (oh, they provided those to us, too) to Shure right after I'd written the Rabbi's. I don't want to be in a position to recommend them, but it's inevitable that I will be. Therefore, I kept their number and will forward it to anyone who needs it. read more
