Ultimately, at some point in February 2022, I decided to hire David to do my 2021 United States Individual Income Tax Return, my 2021 California Resident Income Tax Return, and my 2021 Corporate Tax Return (for both the federal government, and the State of California). As a result of this decision, I informed David via electronic mail (email) about my decision. I made this decision because of my ability to monetarily afford David's tax preparation services, tax advice services, tax consulting services, etc. From my perspective, the way that David "verified" me to ensure that I was actually the individual requesting David's tax preparation services was really weird (which was something that perplexed me, something that was really strange to me, something that rubbed me the wrong way, etc.). I explained to David that just because I have personal (home) contact information that is different than my business contact information does not somehow make me suspicious. David is a Certified Public Accountant that is very detailed, very thorough, very experienced, etc. David is an excellent Certified Public Accountant. David is very knowledgeable. He is "top of the line" in his profession (in my opinion as being his first-time client). David and I predominantly communicated via electronic mail (email), which was great for me because my primary method of communication is electronic mail (email), and my preferred method of communication is electronic mail (email). However, when David and I (we) needed to talk on the telephone, David and I (we) found a way to talk on the telephone when necessary, even when I did not believe that it was necessary, even when I did not have time because I am always swamped/slammed/busy daily (everyday), even when I did not like it (which I did not on one (1) occasion). David and I were able to successfully work together, collaborate together, etc. so that ultimately my 2021 United States Individual Income Tax Return, my 2021 California Resident Income Tax Return, my 2021 United States Income Tax Return For S Corporation, and my California S Corporation Franchise or Income Tax Return, we are drafted on time, prepared on time, finalized on time, submitted on time for filing, etc. I have so much more knowledge and information now because of David than I ever did before with any other tax preparer (Certified Public Accountant or not) that I have ever hired regarding my tax return(s) preparation. As a result, I do thank David for that. David is very insightful. Regarding taxes, I learned a lot from David. I feel more sharpened now because of David as opposed to before I encountered David. Eventually I found out that he inverted the numbers on what I owed. A simple mistake but I paid a huge price for it. On 12/24/18, Christmas Eve, I received a letter from Abbott, Stringham & Lynch, basically telling…read moreme I've been terminated. No, those were not their exact words, but in essence the same. Reason given: "We have reviewed our clients needs to determine how each client fits in the future direction of our practice. After careful consideration, we have decided that we will no longer be able to provide consulting and tax preparation services to you, effective immediately". No holiday greeting thanking me for the 1 time service and $500+ fees paid for tax prep, just a letter terminating me. My initial 1 and only face-to-face meeting was in March of 2018. When entering the offices it felt as if I was entering a federal building security. I was escorted to a fish bowl conference room where I waited for at least 15 minutes and the entire time feeling as if I was being watched. The tax consultant was very nice, professional and experienced. We met for less then 1 hour and all future communication were via email, with the exception of 1-2 calls. There was mis-communication, but I was never clear why. For the first time in the over 40+ years I've filed taxes, I had to file an extension. In addition a check sent was lost, had to cancel it and resend it. For 10+ years prior, Boitano, Sargent & Lilly were my CPA firm and I was fortunate enough to have had one of the partners, Ogden Lilly, as my CPA. In all that time I was greeted and treated with respect, kindness and given full attention. Sadly Ogden passed away May of 2017 and BS&L merged with ASL. I'm still graveling with how personally insulted this letter has made me feel.
